I believe in taking care of my Grand Seikos, in balanced polishing, and a rigorous morning wind routine.
In the morning, if my watch is a little scratched, I'll put on polyWatch while switching out NATO straps.

I have a thousand now

After I remove the polyWatch, I use a deep steel cleanser.
In the ultrasonic bath, I use a water-activated gel cleanser.
Then, to make it smell good, I put a honey-almond perfume on it.
I always use a perfume with little or no alcohol,
because alcohol dries the gaskets and makes the watch less water resistant.

There is an idea of a Grand Seiko .
Some kind of abstraction, but there is no real watch.
Only an entity-- something illusory.
And though you can see its cold snowflake dial.
And you can put it on your wrist and feel the metal gripping you.
And maybe you can even sense its spring drive powering the seconds hand,
It’s simply not a Rolex

It's only foolish if you are literally unable to control your spending. If 10% of your salary would put you under, then that's retarded. If you really 100% value getting the watch, and would value it for its entire lifespan, then it's worth getting. It'll last a lot longer than a car, and even a house considering how often people tend to move, as long as you care for it.

>> No.17571675

>>17571504
Color screens with high pixel counts are unacceptable for watches. The best you could do would be an inverted G&W style display with monochrome, with a simple attract animation like pacman moving across one way while ghosts move across the top. Or you could use a smartwatch and charge it every day.

>>17571526
You could just get that style of bracelet with end lugs, and then not use them. The inner piece is usually about 10mm. If it's hidden by the case you can even get away with a 9mm internal by using a couple of rubber o-rings on either side. Important dimensions are the thickness of the strap, and the size of the links vertically. 24 to 16mm is quite a radical taper though, it might be hard to find bracelets in that style.

>>17571630
What is this delusion? Just buy a cheaper watch. I know a poor guy who has mid range watches, around the 2k mark. He only wears them for special events, because he's scared of damaging them. He'd be happier with a 200 dollar watch, but he's pretty dumb so he's just a slave to advertising.

Let's be honest, most people aren't going to stick with one watch forever. I get bored of my watch every 5 years or so, because tastes change. I have a small collection of watches, but I don't go back and wear the old ones, I'm just too lazy to sell them.

What the other anon said. Whatever the price of the watch, you shouldn't be afraid to use it. My philosophy in that regard is: before buying that watch I accept that the money is gone. As in: would I flush that money down the toilet and not care?
The same goes for anything really, probably the most common one is dinnerware for special occasions that is not even used on special occasions because it's too pristine for that occasion.

You'll pay about a dollar or two for a battery, and something similar for a pin. If you go to a watch store they'll probably charge you 10 bucks to do both.

Only thing of note is the caseback, if it's the kind you have to pry off and push back on, they're a bit of a pain without some tools.

>> No.17571961

>>17571926
Ignore this idiot >>17571950

Depends on the battery type but $3-9 for batteries if you buy one online or even local if its a common size. You also need the tools to open the case and replace the pin. You can buy chinese made kits to do both for about $30, some kits have pins to replace, but if they're as generic as possible so if the pin you need is somehow proprietary you'll have to head to ebay and find that specific pin.

If you hand it over to a jeweler or watchmaker they can do both but you'll pay a lot for it. Most jewelers charge $15-20 for a battery replacement, and if its replacing a pin they might charge another $20.

So $40 to try to do it yourself for any other watch repair you may do, or $20 each time a watch needs a battery.

Looking for a leather strap. Budget $10, nothing fancy, I just want something to replace the metal strap my watch came with.

What the hell is the difference between all the Diloy straps? There are like three dozen, and the description is entirely the same.

For instance, what is the difference between these two:
https://diloy.com/en/leather-watch-straps/calf-leather-watch-straps-ref-302

Both are:

_EVERY_ watch over $2000 is overpriced
>inb4 you're just poor!
Nothing any watchmaker is doing actually costs that much to produce; its all stainless steel, enameled face, brass, synthetic rubies, $20 sapphire crystals etc. The rest is just paying a watchmaker to assemble mass produced parts. They can't just hop on a job board and post a job opening for master watchmakers to make 2 $50,000 watches a day and pay them $50k a year. They're crafstman who demand a really high wage, but they're using movements from decades ago using parts that haven't changed in a century.

What they're selling is jewelry because rich people find it pretty. Its just like diamond rings. Diamonds shouldn't cost as much as they do. Then they use $1000 of gold for the ring itself. Then they sell it for $15,000 when if you turn around and sell each component at market price you get a tiny fraction of what you paid for the final product.

Just like art: that canvas with splatter on it took 30 minutes to make but somehow its worth tens of millions of dollars because someone else thinks its worth that much. Its not.

tl;dr yes they're overpriced but if you're wealthy and want to use it as a bad storage of wealth while gaining utility from its beauty, then its worth whatever you're willing to pay for it.

For all the times you don't take a $2000 dive watch diving. Never know when a splash of water while washing your hands will get into your watch.
> one of those things you never knew you needed until you have access to one
Maybe; I did hear Joe Rogan say the only time his diver watch gets used is when someone goes on stage he'll rotate the bezel to when someone goes on so they can track and see if someone has been on for 10 minutes or 30. Great, its replaced a stopwatch.
>When done right they can pretty much cover any level of dress short of business formal
Same can be said for nearly any watch. Whats your point?
>They filter noobs
The only thing its filtering is morons who like them and can't explain why. That is fine; many of us like inferior or ugly things and they just can't really explain it but pretending they're superior in any measurable way is idiotic.

>That said my most frequently worn watch now is a sports watch with 100m wr because
If you like a feature because of the feature thats fine I guess. I'll bet a soda you won't be within 50 meters of that 100m mark this year. Even if you have a scuba diving trip planned, you're not taking a diver's watch out of fear of damaging it through normal use. Its just like the guys who buy a Ford F250, put an 8" lift kit on it, tune the engine for 1200lbft of torque and they drive it to the office every day. I love working on watch parts. Took my bezel down from 3.6mm to 2.8mm. Wanted to go 0.1mm smaller, but I figure leaving the bezel proud of the insert is a little better given it offers more protection. Also removed some ugly cutting marks on the back because the chinks didn't bother finishing the part you don't see.

Just need to shave down the bezel inserts now. Might need a new tool for it, I need to taper the inner part so it isn't too proud of the crystal.

I don't see how it would. It's "water resistant", so oil shouldn't get out easier than water gets in - it has a gasket and so on.

It was actually very easy. You remove the movement, put it and the case in a bowl of vegetable oil, then insert the movement. The only hard part was figuring out I had to do it while immersed, or else there would be bubbles. The whole process took me less than 15 minutes after I had figured it out.

How long is that water resistance rate for? How long is that gasket good for? Are there any manufacturer defects? Were there any assembly defects? If its a non-zero chance of leaking, you have a chance of leaking oil. Just the same water resistance is stated as such, and not "water proof" on any product any more.

I'll propose a better argument. If the water resistance were actually improved by adding oil, why wouldn't -every- sports watch maker include that as a selling feature?

If mineral oil cooling a computer worked as good or better than water cooling, why wouldn't every computer be cooled with oil?

The pressure on it is not immense.

Because it's only applicable for digital watches, and nobody cares about making them well anyway.

Because oil cooling requires a totally sealed case, and air cooling is good enough for 95% of cases anyway.

Fish tanks are sealed; normal computer cases are not. There are holes for them so air can come in and go out, because of the fans.
