/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - BEIGE PONY* *CONTAINS NO PONY EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and don't wear them daily for too long

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

It's the toe cap + bump toe.
It looks no where near as bad IRL as it does when you're taking close-up pictures of it, though. 5+ feet away it looks like a regular boot as opposed to taking oblique honk honk photos of it.

Whites has the same problem IIRC. Beautiful boot, feels like heaven, absolute clown shoe lasts if you look at them objectively.

Someone a while back put it bluntly:
You either have clownshoes that feel good, or you have good looking shoes that feel like shit. Thus is the curse of the clown-footed.
I think this came up when someone bought a 2030 and it was too tight for him even though it's technically an E. The height reduction pinches your toes if you're clown-footed. But the 2040 is way overpriced for what it is: a bump-toe service boot like all the others. Yet it will easily fit any foot with comfort.

no. roughout is done to make the boot more resistant to scuffs and abrasion. The fibers on the outside will simply brush back into position.
The downside is that it's harder to get oil out, and because it's the soft fibers out, it's easier for something pointy to begin puncturing the boot, whereas the smooth-out boots, that same pointy bit might just slide off and leave a nasty scratch.

There is no perfect boot, but I love roughout anyway.

2mm is perfectly thick. Those look like 100 USD boots anyway, so they'll only last you a year of hard wear, or maybe 3-4 of regular wear.
The point of cheap boots is that, if they fail, you can buy another. As long as they don't fail you while you're out in the boonies or up on a mountain it's fiiine.

>Has its own little ecosystem
>Crazy expensive, even for bespoke tastes
>Even on sale it's hundreds more than regular 'good' footwear full price
>has its own little community who love taking pictures of themselves using it
>Straight and simple to the point, when you buy it, you already get a no-holds barred boot right out of the box with little need for customization
>Whose quality can also be found just as good from cheaper footwear made by hand elsewhere if the audience had bothered to wait a little bit for manufacturing, taken some time to wait for a sale, or simply set simpler expectations

A true rich snob's boot. Worse it's pretending to be an everyman's boot. Kind of like what Macfags do.

Red Wing is more like the Lenovo or Thinkpad of the boot world, does what is expected, probably still overpriced unless you get it used, won't break the bank and is at the 'sane' limit for footwear. But a small amount of heel slip is sometimes normal with good year welted shoes, it takes a bit of time for the footbed to sink and the leather around the heel to change shape

idk if the heel slip for you is a little bit or a lot though

This is a choice. You are allowed to have boots that get wet, get poorly treated, some of them even look better after they've been treated like dirt. This is the autistic sperging of people who spend $600 on a boot, but not a requirement.

Meanwhile you buy fake leather boots and they fall apart in a year or after they take a stiff blow. If you're going to do that, why buy "good" boots at all? Cement constructed boots are way cheaper, entirely synthetic. Georgia boots are ~60 dollars and are only cruel against fashion and plastic. Meanwhile you spend eight times that much for a "Cruelty free" boot that you can't resole anyway because it would destroy the faux leather if you did.

If you think the squeak is coming from elsewhere, it might be the tongue against the sides. A little renovateur will fix it.
Otherwise it might be an insole or sock liner that's moving around, normally should have some adhesive.

Last resort is if they forgot to add the thin strip of (???) between the various leather layers of the sole that is meant to stop the squeaking. Only way to fix that is a rebuild.

How do you decide what boot size you wear? On the Brannock Device, I'm exactly 10, but size up to 10.5 for sneakers.

Should I get the exact size, size up from 10, or should I size down?

Here's something you don't see often. These boots were made between 1988 and 1993 by a now defunct American shoe making company called Stuart McGuire. Found this pair on eBay, all I've done to them is clean, condition and polish.
To be blunt, Stuart McGuire was (for the time) a very middle of the road shoe company, absolutely nothing special. That's what makes these boots surprising, they are pretty much equal in quality to modern offerings from much higher level/established bootmakers.

The leather is thick but supple, feels great on my feet. I'm shocked at how comfortable these boots are on, there's no problem spots. Arch support is superb, the last is a little wide but that works for me. I'm between a 12D and 12E on Brannock, these are a 12D and I can last them nice and tight without feeling like they are too narrow. Length wise is perfect, and the height is good so I can wiggle my toes a little but not feel loose. Heel is fantastic, no slipping. Soles are vibram, some of the stitching is frayed but otherwise the sole is in great shape, with how infrequently I'll wear this it will be years before I'll have to take them to a cobbler. I do need to replace the laces, these are the original and they're a little dingy.

The only downside to these boots are the number of eyelets. 10 eyelets, no speed hooks. I've never seen this system before, I have to thread the lace through these short brass tubes. It doesn't take too long and it feels very supportive once it's laced up.
I'm not a boot expert by any means. I've got Allen Edmonds, Chippewa 1939,Grant Stone, Red Wing, Thorogood, Dan Post, a couple of pair of vintage Florsheim as well. If this boot was handed to me in brand new condition today I'd have zero issue paying current Red Wing prices for it. Really happy I stumbled across it.
Here's some more pics of the boots

And here is a pair of oxfords made from leather that was created in Russia in 1786.

The ship carrying the leather sank and was recovered a few decades ago. It was covered by mud so the leather was salvaged.
Stefano Bemer had enough leather to make about 10 pairs of shoes in 2015, and about 5 more in 2018.
I suppose they must all be gone by now, although he said he wouldn't sell the last pair for less than $100k.

That's some projection right there. Even if it were true, fashion is usually secondary to being muscular (in my experience at least, having gained about 35 lbs of lean mass over the last years) so it doesn't make that much of a difference. I don't own a pair, but I suspect corcoran marauders (get the soft toe) or anything else styled after the jungle boot would do a good job being breathable, what with the climate you're intended to use them in.

More breathable than full-leather boots anyway.

VERY humid, very hot most of the year. in the ranges of 35C much of the time.
I had considered a set of McRae jungle boots, but I don't want to look like a Vietnam GI larper at work. Not to mention: I'm not walking in a bog with them, they may see rain at most.

Red Wing used to make fabric boots for exactly my use case, but like everything else cool they made, they haven't made them in years.

>But they are expensive and I'm still trying to cope with the fact I spend $280 on footwear, the most i've spent on shoes in my life.

Stupid nigger shill that happened in December 2021 so basically onr year ago more or less. Also if you had used your stupid nigger eyes to look at the image and your stupid nigger brain to process the information presented, dumb gorilla nigger, you would have realized that a replacement was received, which was even worse, to the point where a refund was requested after. Stupid ugly nigger newfaggot from reddit. There's a reason soloniggers have their own do not buy categoryin the OP. Lurk more.

Avoid. They've been circling the drain for over a decade. Honestly surprised that people are still even talking about them when I got back into the boot buying market after an absence of about 10 years.
Even the lower tier english makers like Loake 1880, Sanders etc., are better.

If you're okay spending 500 then there are way more options than fucking Allen Edmonds
What specifically are you wanting in a boot? Just black? Any specific styles? Cap toe? Speed hooks? Service boot vs combat boot?
Give us some more info and we can make some recs. 500 is a good spot as there's lot of good options in that range
