Actually I just noticed that one because it's in a decent closeup, looked it up and it seems Oris had more watches in it on other characters but this one looked the best.

Looks good. Wish there was an online store of vintage watches, and new watches to buy with some confidence. eBay is full of fake listings from india, and amazon is nearly unusable. Search for Seiko and it immediately recommends like 10 other brands and clearly chinese knockoffs of shit.

It helps if you know exactly what you're looking for, but that takes quite some time to research. If you just search Seiko then you get suggested all sorts of shit, if you sort by price on eBay you can skip the cheap stuff but you still have to have a pretty good idea of what you're after.

the German air force in WWII contracted out to 5 companies to make watches for them, IWC was one of those brands. The watches were 55mm which is fuckhuge but they were designed for maximum visibility and to be worn over a suit
in the early 2000s, I believe without looking it up it was 2002, IWC brought the design back with some updates but shrunk it to 46.5mm. Still huge because that's the point, but not 55mm which is ridiculous
a few years back they updated it and shrank it again to 43mm so more people that wanted it could get it without being filtered by the size
from 1949 to 2005 they had the Pilot Mark series which was sort of a mix between the original WWII watch and a military field watch

long story short, yes, it's huge on purpose but the original it's based off of was 55mm and too huge to be practical.

No, with a caveat.

The styling is sometimes cool. The external finishing is sometimes done to an acceptable standard. The movements are not finished but are off-the-shelf, so even if it dies, you can plug a new one in (or have If your watchmaker do it if you can't/wont).

But if you want to keep that watch a long time, at some point it will need something replaced, like a crown, like a handset. If there was water ingress it may need a dial. Tiny companies like that don't keep a back log of parts (and that's assuming they're even around in 5, 10, 20 years).

Yes, large companies typically keep backlogs of parts. In some cases, they will even remanufacture parts as needed. (This is mostly the case for the higher end companies, but I have experience with Longines doing it.)

Seiko is the oddity in this regard as they do not keep anything for more than 10 years. They treat their watches as disposable.

yeah metal expansion is not how this shit works, it's your actual wrist, ever noticed how your face looks a little different in the morning or how your shoe size changes? it's the same thing, your body dimensions are not static, they change very slightly at different times of day

swiss design is to use a micro adjust to lengthen and shorten the entire bracelet, this is because swiss bracelets have next to no play in the links

japanese design is to have a little bit of play, this allows the bracelet to not dig into your skin and also eliminates the need to fiddle with the bracelet multiple times a day

"watch guys" like having something to fiddle with so the japanese design is usually seen as a defect, but it's actually a better more user friendly design if you are willing to surrender a mostly illusory sense of control

The fuck you say. I didn't fall into the meme of faux diver's watches with spinning bezels and nonsense speedway timers. I wear a watch because its pretty to look at, tells me the time, date, and sometimes day. Even on my F91 and F105 I don't think I've used the stopwatch or alarm more than 5 times in the last 10 years.

NTA but to be fair most people are in debt these days by design, while the cost of most luxury watches is a lot for jewellery it's not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things.

Fact is, refusing to buy a £5000 watch isn't going. to change houses on average costing £300,000 with no guarantee a mortgage will be authorised even if you have the 10% deposit cash in hand when banks prefer to give mortgages to landlords instead.

>The system is rigged
Thats exactly what a dumbass would say. "well I need that new car because its safe and gets good mpg and its reliable!" so they go into debt. Do not give me that horse shit of "my old car requires too much money to repair and maintain!" because the $3000 transmission every 3 months. Don't fool yourself into thinking an $1200 car payment for life is more affordable than a $3000 repair once every 5 years. Then they put shit on credit cards and only pay the minimums enjoying that 20% interest. Then they see a fancy purse they just hafta have! Gotta go on vacation to experience cultures! time to go to brunch and drink $16 cocktails! Those people deserve to be financial slaves their entire life.

There is no "system" or "design" to get everyone into debt permanently. Its only idiots falling prey to instagram, tiktok, and other advertising bullshit because they work hard so they "deserve the finer things in life" they can't afford. Oh and its just so easy to apply for financing and pay a lot extra. If you're in debt currently for anything other than a mortgage thats completely on you for not saving, and not making enough money. I'm not saying just hop in the job cannon and get a $50,000 raise, but people just need to live within their means. Stop fooling yourself falling for the same mousetraps of "buy now" and it comes to your house in a stupid amazon box a day later. They've removed the friction of transactions so well people don't even realize they spend money. MRI and CAT scans of the brain have confirmed this. You're broke as fuck giving your money to billionaires because you're too stupid to realize you're giving away money you don't have.

If you cannot afford a $1000 watch, you shouldn't buy one or finance one for 4 years.

I have $80,000 in the bank, its not a brag just giving some perspective. My mortgage has $55k left on it. I could spend $10k on a watch today and it wouldn't change what my weekend plans are. But being financially prudent, it would be moronic to stay in debt, pay an extra $3k in interest on my mortgage than to have a stupid watch that looks pretty.

I think you have a fairly blinkered attitude there anon, the attitude of
>Well if you choose to live your life as anything more than a robot you deserve to have no financial security
that is the rigged system that this attitude upholds. In an ideal world people would take action to demand that financial security and leisure needn't be mutually exclusive, but alas, most don't and those that do become public enemy no.1.

If people are happy to forego financial security in favour of fucking enjoying themselves after working their bollocks off working the 9-7 every day, then I get it. I don't think it's necessarily more clever to do the opposite and forego leisure in favour of solely living to provide your bank manager with a yacht so you can one day have shelter, the most basic requirement humans have, that you personally own.

Basically, I'm not rolling my eyes at Anon for considering paying for a watch in instalments in lieu of dutifully handing over the same money to businesses every month to play with as investments, or yeah paying interest to a bank for the basic need of shelter. If you, me, him weren't dumbasses we wouldn't be tolerating this situation.

Then they can have a moment of happiness and continue to working off that interest and that moment of happiness for hours and hours later.

The bankers already have my money, now its just a game of paying down the mortgage on paper. Thats not buying them a new yacht, in fact I'm paying less in interest than the average NPC paying for their house over 30 years.

I make sacrifices today and forego the latest gamestation, skip out on a brand new car, pass up on a Grand Seiko just for a few years to avoid paying interest on toys. I guess I'm a robot not willingly being a debt slave.

You go ahead and be that NPC agreeing to the debt terms, work your bollocks off 9-7 every day. I'll be debt free buying my shit when I can reasonably afford it retiring early and not working 10 hour days. But go ahead and tolerate your moments of happiness in exchange for years of labor. moron.

Probably stick with the PRX until you can afford something very snazzy, I wouldn't really bother with the mid-range because you're not getting much more in terms of finishing, mid-rage mechanical movements are soulless mass produced throwaways so you may as well stick to quartz, much of the mid-range is microbrands who likely will not be around forever to keep your watch serviced with parts, often mid-range watches are just homages to luxury watches anyway, etc

Also not sure why they never made the back dial - I don't think they have the ice blue dial in the 40mm but then I'm not sure.

I do wish they made a 37mm or something as I was surprised at how small it was at first but it looks a good fit on. I'd rather a watch a bit smaller than too big as my wrist trends towards being slimmer than the opposite.

Pretty much the nicest cheap diver you can get but the Invicta pro diver might be better. The duro is pretty large though so doesn't fit everyone. Kinda crazy bill gates has it as his one watch collection because it is the definition of mediocrity

Honestly I don't like that one, and I'm big into old rectangular watches. In that sense I could name the Cartier Tank as a watch that I really like in the "new market".

As for round watches, if I had to choose for daily wear, I like the Snowflake, the Seiko SARB, maybe a dressy Aqua Terra, maybe the Carrera, something like that. Not too dressy, not too sporty. Then there are watches like fliegers and divers which I like but I wouldn't wear most of the time. My style is similar to picrel, a lot of earthy knitwear.

I was gonna go with the 35 if my wrist was too small but the 40 seemed to fit fine with mine and seeing the sunburst waffle dial mademecum so I copped the blue prx. Old pic

Looks sweet on you anon, waddle dial is a beauty and it’s what I was listing after at first until I saw the smaller version. I ordered online so never tried the 40 but I’m curious how different the size looks in reality compared to the 35.

I might have a quick look when getting links taken out out but I saw a photo of someone with slim wrists wearing it where it looked ridiculous and it’s obviously left a mark on my subconscious lol.

>Invicta pro diver might be better
I'm a poorfag and can't afford much more than casios. I was considering an Invicta as my diver but had doubts about how relieable an automatic movement at that price point woukd be. So if I was going for quartz, I thought I might as well stay on Casio's lane. What would be the cheapest automatic diver that won't fall apart in a couple of years? I've been looking at the scuba dude Vostok, but that watch it's its own thing.

In Gates' case I beleive it's more of a statement regarding how frugal his persona is. Duro gets the job done and looks the part enough, that sorta thing.

Who is even making steel digital watches any more? Would love one with radio time.

Do you think having a different name would have been a better selling point for them?
I'm sure they thought it would elevate the Seiko brand overall, and of course as a corporation they have to be selfish about their own brand name, but it probably just lowers the value of Grand Seiko. Then again, it probably makes it more well known than something like Credor by virtue of having Seiko on the name. It's interesting to think about.

Honestly homage watches used to be alright back when it was a novelty thing, but if your biggest selling point is making cheap watches that look like iconic expensive ones and have no original identity of your own, you should just fuck off. Tissot is a prime example of that nowadays.

Yeah I'm not sure what they could do; Acura (honda's luxury brand) is just a made up word that a marketing team came up with and its stuck. Everyone knows what a Rolex is, you flash that and everyone knows you spent thousands on it. Was it $3k or $30k, the layperson will never know. But if you show that same layperson a Seiko 5 and a Grand Seiko $15k watch, the only thing they might notice would be a different dial and a power meter sometimes.
