/btg/ - ALPINE GRAIN Edition

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and don't wear them daily for too long

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

Because they're constantly cost cutting and making them worse while upping the price. Their cap toe is a fake single layer, they stopped offering the handsewn welt because they claim it's too hard on the employees, they don't offer any kind of customization any more, they don't even stitch the soles on. They're objectively inferior and moving towards just pumping out standard boots to as many people as possible. They're a cheap copy of White's started by a former White's employee, of course people would prefer the original better made boot.

I dig my Vibergs. However for the prices they charge they should at least have the following:
- Rolled edges
- Leather liner should cover back of speed hooks

Lastly (and personal preference) the gap between the lacing should be closer (< 1”) for a service boot. I am guessing since the majority of their lasts are E width they design their boots to fit flat-footed, skinny ankle hipsters without the facings touching.

According to Nick's sizing chart I'm a little over a 13 purely in length, but the only Mr Lou available in the leather I wanted was an 11.5 E width.
I took the gamble and turns out it's an absolutely perfect fit. It's seriously the best-fitting leather shoe I've ever owned.
I had to take out the little slip insole though, but I feel like the last is so low for my foot that I probably would've had to do this anyway, even at a larger size.

Need sizing advice, please help

So my gf bought me a pair of White's perry boots as a Christmas gift. I'm not allowed to have them yet, but she knows I'm particular about sizing, so she let try them on today. Length was perfect. Left foot fit exactly how I would want, not too snug, not too long.

My right foot however is ever so slightly larger than my left. Length was fine but it felt a little too tight at the widest part of my foot (front ball?) to the point where it felt kind of sore after pacing around the house a bit checking for heel slip.

Will they stretch out with break in so that's not a big deal? Or should I exchange them for an EE width pair? Thanks in advance for any input.

i find things are a little more refined on the viberg, SPI cranked up to 11. stitchdown wise its clean but there are areas that are questionable: on the right boot inside track the two rows are practically on top of each other

my only complaint with the viberg is that the shaft is unlined and combined with the softer CXL it feels a little "wobbly" compared to the the whites on the left. overall if you enjoy the firm grip of a boot the white's will do it better. if you're after a softer, most flexible and less break in experience the vibergs will be for you

You’d be surprised how many fuck this up. Research your local cobblers because the majority of them will ruin good shoes nowadays. Plus the sole will need to be scuffed to glue the topy so if it hasn’t been worn they’re going to sand the sole to get the glue to bond. Double soles are pretty decent for wear already and will harden as you wear them and compact the grain. I would just wear them and use a good sole guard like the one from saphir.

There is a difference between leather wearing in and being continuously over saturated with moisture. With shoe trees and alternate wear it dries at a slower rate as close to its original last shape. The upper, insole, midsole, counters, etc last longer. If you wear the same pair everyday it doesn’t go through that drying process and it damages the leather. Replacing cork is cheap but replacing and restitching insoles and uppers isn’t. Even though a full leather construction boot lasts longer wear-wise you’re shortening that duration by not alternating between pairs negating the advantage over cork. The people who actually wear PNW “work” boots on the job know this and have 2 or more pairs. 2 well cared for pairs will last longer than one abused pair that you will be re-building constantly.

OK so I found a top down photo of the "55 last"
One is Whites the other one is Nicks, not sure which

It is really round, I didn't think American boots would be this round.
Now I see what you mean when you say Euro boots are pointy.

The same level of use and moisture that destroyed the cork, gave the rest of the boot (upper, sole, ...) some mild wear.

I also found this topdown photo of the Viberg 2030, which looks really good to me and not unlike some Euro boots

It is also surprisingly very round

>> No.17349247

Fucking blueowl just removed the discounts on Viberg, I was about to cop a pair, gg on those who got a pair on sale. Are still worth it at around 700 USD? Viberg uses a business model with fomo in mind so everyone runs to buy them

Leather can only “handle” moisture when it can dry properly after being exposed. If it dries too fast it damages the leather. If it doesn’t dry it damages the leather. There is a reason tanners try to stuff as many oils and waxes into leather and it still does not completely prevent it from absorbing moisture. Also sweat is not just water. It also contains salt which is notorious for drying out and damaging leather.

I grabbed another pair as well. 11 on the 1035 fits me with regular socks. I ordered a 2030 in 11.5 to try it out. I’m interested to see how it fits.

If this were the average roundness of Euro boot toes I'd be happy.
But it's not, this is: >>17349065

The leather on those boots never went anywhere near the limit of "too much moisture".
The cork on the other hand is completely trashed.

Your reading comprehension is trash. You don’t have to be walking through water to damage leather from moisture. You’re doing it wearing them everyday with your sweaty ass feet regardless if there is a little bit of cork in there.

And the leather is absolutely fine while the cork is trashed.

Is 2030 smaller? I'm tempted to buy the Service Boot 2030 in Sweet Potato Eco Veg Suede, 500 USD was a good deal but they're back to 624 and I'm still contemplating this, I'm also saving for a pair of Islays

Nothing because because cork has been used forever in footwear without issue even by bespoke makers. You’re supposed to keep your boots in good condition and get them resoled before they start falling apart not after.

>> No.17349332

>>17349301
The 2030 is more narrow than the 1035. Get the Islays instead. You’ll be happier with them over suede Vibergs. Viberg is only worth it in horsebutt, shell, or kudu/veg veldt.

What is the opinion on Carmina boots? I saw a pair with the commando sole in a shop yesterday and they were very tempting. I understand C&J Snowdons are normally considered the apex of the "outdoor" dress boot, but Carmina is much better looking to me.
