/btg/ - Unstructured Lace To Toe Lineman Edition

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and don't wear them daily for too long

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

Most horsehide came from adult horse so forget the being "fine" grain.
Don't buy random horsehide boots and expect the meme roll.

All fit perfectly on the first try like every other shoe I try on, it's like my feet are the basis for every shoe company out there. I've never tried a pair of shoes that didn't fit properly.
I wear every boot 3-4 years until the soles start wearing out.
I'll wipe them with a damp cloth once in a couple of weeks.

I really don't get how so many people have problems with shoes and boots, like they fall apart, like they're not comfortable, and you need to condition them with humpback whale cum so they don't start flaking.

Instead of buying <$150 boots every 3-4 years, you could buy really nice boots that can last decades, where instead of throwing them away as the soles wear out you can have them resoled. Taking care of the leather becomes more important at that point, but unless you are really abusing them it is usually enough to get some nourishing oil and maybe some sealing waxy cream on them every 6 months or so.

I think you will also find that a pair of good shoes/boots can do more than merely "fit". They can accomodate your foot and its motion, feather your step, be so supple that it feels as if you are barely wearing anything, and they can keep your feet from tiring and warm even on long hikes.

I still like having throwaway pairs of cheaper boots to do stuff with that I would be afraid could ruin my more expensive/nicer ones though. And a fair few of the cheaper ones have been surprisingly good too.

its the level of comfort offered by the boot. as someone who stood on concrete for 8 hours a day, the cushiony synthetic materials like poron always failed without exception.

you upgrade a bit from mall trash into the babby tier and get red wings, which are more supportive and comfortable with its cork and leather, but still has long term problems (no arch support and cork)

then you move into the top tier ultimate offerings like the all leather White and you just experience levels of comfy that you've never experienced before. i personally wished i had known about White's earlier so i didn't waste so much time, money, and discomfort climbing the tiers

Saddle soap. This will dry out waxy leathers like CXL. It's not so bad.

Acetone. The nuclear option.

Comfort of footwear has never been a real issue for me desu. The other day I walked 31k steps and my feet were tired but didn't hurt or get blisters or whatever happens with mall trash boots. That's about as much as I ever walk in a day, usually not even a third of that. I weight 180, maybe I'd need more support if I were like 250.

I didn't actually try any boots that you can't find in a decent mall so I'm probably missing out. I will consider ordering a pair but if I'm going to go through the hassle I'll get really high quality ones.

I'm looking to wear them casually as an around-town kinda boot, and they'll be my first pair of nice (or at least not shit) leather boots. I worry that I'm going to get boots that look a little too formal and I'll look goofy/gay, but I also don't want to be a work boot wearing larper. Something in between would be ideal I guess.

vibram has those sharp little grippy things blended into their winter soles but I can't imagine they'd be too kind on your hardwood floors or whatever.

It looks fine though? I never got the hate. It's some old le epic gentleman's rule type shit. Anon looks good and black trousers look better with the brown then say gray. Its the least offensive color issue ever.

it'd look way better with tan pants. just because you CAN wear black, nobody is stopping you, doesn't mean it looks good.

It seems like /fa/ has some sort of animosity towards Nicks Boots and will shill Whites any day of the week. Any particular reason why?

It kind of seems like that's the case. My Nicks Americanas were worth every penny. I couldn't imagine anyone having any reason to suggest that Nicks just sucks overall

Trying to convince my old man to get something from nicks too instead of the danner / thorogoods he has to buy every year

I work on construction sites and have to wear steel toes. I've been using the Danner Quarrys for the last two years as my work boot and they have been great, but they're certainly not the best I've ever worn. Nicks is definitely just a step up from my experience
