17329385 No.17329385 [Reply] [Original]

/btg/ - ROSEWOOD UNICORN MP Edition

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

My Red Wing work boots (not heritage) that I wear to work everyday have split at a seam on the side and I'll have to leave them for at least a week to get repaired (if they can be). I need to get something to wear in the meantime or maybe for good. Anybody have any experience with Thorogood, Redback, or Blundstone slip on boots? Wrong. You probably like loose boots because they remind you of your mom, but everyone knows that leather stretches over time and wear. If you buy them roomy out of the box, they will, after some time, fail to stabilize your feet, especially on uneven ground.

The boots shouldn't be tight at all, it will only get worse after wearing for a few hours. Besides once you break them in and the insole conforms enough they will only fit better and not in any way more roomy even if the leather stretches.
There should always be room and boots should be comfortable from the moment you first try them on, don't fall for the snug to "break in" the footwear.

There is not much of a price difference, TLB is maybe a little cheaper on MTOs and also cheaper (and lasted) shoe trees.

TLB is built better but has very few options.
They use top quality materials, except their shell.

Carmina is built well and has a ton of options.
They use top quality materials everywhere, including their shell.

The biggest difference is, TLB has like 2 rounded and 2 chisel lasts, with width options for each. They all fit identically, only the toe changes.
On Carmina lasts are a total gamble, with vastly different heels, instep, toeboxes etc. A total mess.

Also TLB uses leather heels. Carmina is celastic.
I'm not one to care about such things, but the heel on my Carmina boots has always been a little uncomfortable. Maybe that's why.

Durable and resoleable since these are goodyear welted (but do not trust Carmina to resole them they will butcher them)
But I would not wear them for outdoors work, these are not work boots.

If you have flat feet you need arch support and European brands do not really have arch suppport. You can buy inserts I guess but not sure how these work.
On the other hand American brands like Alden, Whites and Nicks are known for their arch support. But good luck finding their boots anywhere in Europe.

Shell is very difficult leather and it normally costs a lot of money for a reason, all the cheaper knockoffs are very low quality you are always better off just getting other types of leather that are just as cheap but not knockoffs.

If you want to go with Meermin I'd rather take their waxed kudu from CF Stead instead of this "waxed shell" from an undisclosed tannery.

Jodhpurs can look nice but you absolutely need a pair of good fitting pants that hide the buckle, the belt and buckle look very faggy in that setup, they are also made in chiseled lasts so that also contributes to that look, but if they are well used they can make a good fit

I really think Skoak's monthly Enzo Bonafe GMTOs are a good deal to build up a wardrobe of high end shoes.

528€ plus VAT for a handwelted black captoe oxford from one of the greatest shoemakers is not a bad price at all

You gotta wait 4 months is the only downside, and no returns since it's an MTO.

Is this sequence correct? Clean boots > condition > brush > 1 layer wax > brush. I'm seeing some people use wax on the toe and on the back, and others on the whole boot. I suppose it's ok to wax the whole boot with one layer if you don't water shine after, because shining the areas that flex will make them crack? 1) Renovateur then wait 5 and brush
2) Pommadier cream, wait 5 then brush
3) High gloss wax, 1-2 coats (depending on desired shine) over the whole boot/shoe wait 5 then brush
4) (Optional) Mirror Shine/High Shine on toe with ice cube and rubbing alcohol method.

Putting a few layers of wax over the whole boot won’t lead to cracking. That takes like 10+ layers. Even just a few layers of wax with offer protection from minor scuffs and water droplets. I like to mirror shine the toes because it looks better and the more layers of wax protect from deep scuffs.

Renovateur every 6 months or if it feels dry
Cream polish (with color) to cover up any scuffs and scratches
Wax for protection and shine. Color works better, neutral is ok.

For the first two, let them dry for a bit and then brush.

For wax, let it dry for a bit then wrap a bit of cotton cloth around your fingers (I cut strips from an old white t-shirt), then get it a little bit wet but not too much (touching an ice cube for a few seconds works well) and buff vigorously to give it a nice shine. I basically touch the ice cube a bit for every panel of the shoe to get it wet again.

If you want a mirror shine in the heel and toes (for dress shoes) then you need to apply a lot of layers of wax and do the fingering many many times.
It's more of an art than exact science, if you do it a few times you'll figure it out. Not too much pressure, maybe a bit more water, a bit more wax, it all depends on the shoe etc.

Also remember if you are trying to shine brand new shoes it will never work - same reason you should never wear brand new shoes in the rain. The pores are not open yet, you gotta wear them for a few days first.

I intended to order the size Viberg 12 but it looks like I got the Size 11 which is a US 12. The 11s fit with thinner socks and surprising the ball of my foot lines up so they should be fine after they break in. If ordered any other leather I’d probably size up to the Viberg 12.

The 1035 last in Viberg 11E is is shorter than my Barrie 12D but the ball seems to be in the same spot.
