The real question is WHO do you want to not think you're a tryhard poorfag.

If the answer is "poor people" then, by all means, Rolex is your best bet.
If the answer is "rich people", be aware that Rolexes are not impressive to the upper class. That's when you're looking at PP/AP/VC/ALS...maybe some JLCs.

I'm in Europe, living in a rather small city (100k inhabitants, north east of France). I've told the AD I wanted a DJ on Jubilee, preferably with flutted bezel.
2 weeks later the lady calls me for a silver DJ on oyster bracelet which I have declined. 2 months later she calls me again for an Explorer and a black OP, both I have declined.
Didn't get any call recently.

Put a piece of tape across each watch's dial. Mark the tape with today's date.
Then go about your life normally.

Pro tip when looking at ebay Seikos that look fake as fuck such as this one. Check the case back and Google the 8 digit code with a hyphen in the middle. Like that one says 7009-3040 on the back. 7009 is the movement and 3040 is the case type. It won't tell you the exact model of the watch but should show you a lot of Seikos that look similar but with different dial and hand sets. Googling this code gets you some very different looking watches.

Each mechanism type has its pros and cons. Quartz is great for pain free, set-and-forget. Leave it on a shelf for a year and it'll still be ticking when you come back and keeping the kind of time that most affordable mechanicals lose inside a week. Solar is peak quartz, you get an unreasonable amount of time between servicing.
Personally I own both quartz and some automatics. My current daily is a quartz. Just about what you need and want.

Besides, a 70's datejust is like what, 3k or something at the minute, old Air-Kings are probably even less? If watches are your brand of autism, it isn't really a lot of money when you look at it alongside another expensive consumerism hobby/obsession like gaming, anime fig collecting, custom keyboards or whatever. Some people just put 100% of their disposable income into watches because that's what they're into.

I'm kinda retarded with watches, does quartz ever fail? I'd imagine a mechanical watch can easily be rebuilt? What happens when quartz fails? Guessing the lifespan isn't the same? Also, thoughts on using that watch as a daily watch with jeans, button ups, and polo shirts? Thanks

>> No.17100424

>>17100423
It's technically possible but quartz watches are very durable. There's much less to go wrong and the mechanisms are practically a solved problem. A mechanical is more likely to have something go wrong and need maintenance of some kind.
If you're expecting it to be an even trade you're mistaken. Quartz is pretty much objectively better as an actual means of timekeeping. Mechanical is still around because of aesthetic preferences and people enjoying what's perceived as a more premium or intricate method of operation.
If you have a regular battery-powered quartz you're looking at about three years per battery. A solar can be more like ten. If a quartz fails it could be repaired if it's a minor failure or the entire mechanism could be replaced, and the same is also true of mechanicals.

It sucks that nobody's making objective tests of watch manufacturers' technical claims. I guess because it would be too expensive?
For example, many high horology brands brag about how their movement designs help accuracy, but then never actually say what their watches' accuracy is, and nobody online ever puts them on a timegrapher. Perhaps most important to test would be "reliability", but I wouldn't even know where to start with that short of buying a sample size of 30 and throwing them into a time machine to run for 10 years.
