I think there's a difference between being someone who is well versed in the patrimony of the Catholic faith, and likely prefers traditional rites and devotions (Tridentine Mass, stricter old rules about abstention and fasting, preference for reverent liturgy) and being someone who sees Catholic patrimony as a vague kind of Western European cultural inheritance. in my country, the latter is very common among people who profess a love of Catholic tradition. it's just a way to show a sort of chauvinist pride in their heritage, not a way to seek self-mortification out of love of God and the other. and while you're quite right that there are hypocrites in every religion, I think ours is uniquely susceptible, and it's a great stain on our faith's ability to bear public witness that so many people can so easily assimilate it into their spiritually flaccid, triumphalist ideology.
