Rolex
Thought it was overpriced bullshit for the tasteless morons with more money than sense.
Realized it's actually just an entry level watch and real watches cost even more so it's only natural that everyone buys a Rolex as their first luxury watch and there's really no sense in buying anything cheaper until you get down to a G-Shock because everything else is a massive compromise that's worth nothing in the eyes of everyone from the experts to the plebs.

It's a sad fact but I'm poor and I'll never be able to afford anything good so I shouldn't really envy better people, it's my fault that I got into this situation and that I'll never get out of it and no matter how hard I try to find some "smart"
option that's still "respectable" but it's just not happening if you don't pay the amount of money needed for a real luxury watch, there are no shortcuts, gotta pay your dues.

Cartier - I thought they just made fashion watches.

Omega - I thought they were a high end watch brand. Turns out most of their watches are mediocre quality and look cheap in person.

Rolex - I though they were expensive simply because of brand name and marketing and not worth the money. I was very wrong. They make daily wear watches you can put on your wrist and not worry about for the next 10 years. They are luxury in the best sense of the word.

GS - I'll get shit for this but while that are good they aren't the god-tier watch weebs say they are.

Rolexes are definitely not worth the money.
Their external finishing is a joke, and their movement finishing is non-existent.

External finishing to a autistic macro level isn't everything. My experience with Rolex is they still look very well finished to the human eye and touch but you also get great built quality and reliability and iconic designs. They are watches that just work and work well. You might think they are expensive, they are, but no one getting a Rolex at retail price today are going to say they are not worth the money.

A Submariner case for instance is basically a box.
A GS case has intricate geometry, hairline polished bevels, contrasting polishing/brushing with sharp borders between them, facets, ...

It's not just about the macro level, and it's not just about the level of polish.

citizen uses a higher quality movement and a dive watch is actually practical and simple, while your dad will most likely never actually use a chronograph so it's just pointless clutter and additional expense. that seiko looks like any number of mall watches your dad could just buy himself, whilst I recommended those citizens because they have a more unique styling without being too out there, so it's a little more special. I also believe all of them use blue lume which is rarer at these price points and has a cooler look to it.

5-10 years ago I used to hate modern Omega with a fiery passion for being made to comparable external quality standards to TIssots and having movements that ate themselves while being priced like quasi-Rolex competitors and having a design catalogue still largely stuck in the 1990s nadir of modern watch design.

The Swatch Group has since made a legitimate effort to improve Omega's external finishing and the 8500 movements don't seem as prone to eating themselves. Omega's a lot less terrible today than they were 10-15 years ago as a result.

Not the person you are replying too, but you are misunderstanding the point. https://www.siebeljuweliers.nl/horloges/citizen/citizen-herenhorloge-super-titanium-bm7470-84e-titanium-zilver
the citizen promaster diver does not come with a bracelet, only a rubber strap, you will have to buy a 20mm bracelet. or you can just buy a 20mm leather strap. I would recommend this because the stock strap is extremely tooltastic with diving tables written on it. I don't know where you buy bracelets in the netherlands but you should be able to find some place that sells them online, they all come from china, they should be 30-50 euros. if it won't come in time just get leather or "sailcloth' style strap.

if you want a cheap chrono just get one of the dozens of seagull powered ones (baltic et al)

This particular movement came in 3rd place at the 1948 Concours de Chromoetrie and features a large brass/invar Guillaume balance, mounted by a blued steel Breguet spiral, and it is stamped twice with the Geneva seal, reflecting the absolute highest caliber movement Patek ever put into a wristwatch case. Grand Seiklo SBGZ005 because anyone who isn't a watch autist will see "Seiko" somewhere on the dial and not remotely consider that they are looking at a watch hand-made to the standard of high horology independent watchmakers.

Hell, even people who think they know about watches will just assume it's a regular GS.

Wouldn't some fucking bongs emitting from your watch be infinitely ruder and more noticeable than just sneaking a peek at the time? An hourly chime is also different from bonging on command.
Yeah I get it it's a stupid watchmaker flex like memebillons but those at least have some kind of theoretical reason for existence while there is no actual excuse for minute repeaters.

It's a historical holdover. Minute repeaters in pocket watches would buzz or vibrate meaning that you could just press the button on the pocket watch while leaving it in your coat. It's still the best square model to buy because the new screens are much better and the module has some nice features that the old solar model didn't have, like showing the current time while you are on thw stopwatch or countdown screens.

>> No.15983956

>>15983930
I'm thinking of the new one which looks like that and uses the new calibre but is wider to compensate. Anyway the 2500 movements have an issue where they start wearing out quickly because they can only be lubed a certain amount and after 5 years it starts going and the wear racks up. So it's fine but you need to service it regularly which kind of makes the whole co-axial gimmick useless since that is supposed to extend service times.
If you don't care about that and you like the watch, buy it.

And this is largely based off my own genuine spontaneous reactions to spotting them in the wild, unexpectedly.

The RO is just too gimmicky and flashy with its bolts and sharp corners. Also the bracelet looks like a triangle from the side because it's so wide at the watch head and tapers so very dramatically.

The Overseas is just a much "nicer" looking watch overall.
