Aren't art hoes kind of dead now? I guess you could say it was an early zoomer thing. It's all e-girl and y2k shit now. Which is similar but less 90s punk and more 00s weeb. And ugly as sin.

i think it's about to have a renaissance. I noticed more and more people talk about it especially older (25-30) tiktok users and people on ig. My guess is it's because people in that age range grew up with this (or idolized it but were a little too young to participate like myself) and don't see themselves in zoomer alt fashion at all but are still too young to identify with professional/mature fashion, wearing normie business casual just feels like a cosplay to me. I feel like it's way easier to put a professional spin on this kind of fit to make it wearable for work and my freetime, going out with friends etc

Oh yeah the styles change that fast now because of the internet. Personally I quite like that transitionary stage from the sophisticated indie 'authentic' hipster thing to art hoes. When people were trying to dress like the Smiths in oversized chore coats etc. If I had to give it a date where I live in the UK it was maybe like 2013-2016?

Also I think it's worth pointing out that I don't think >>15957312 is super representative of that 2010ish indie hipster style. It was often a lot more cringe with missmatched ultra skinny jeans, giant dumb hats, those fucking arab neck scarf things. Sometimes they even crossed over into the LMFAO swag look... It sounds like you’re combining a few things there. The girl OP posted was pretty representative of the twee side of things and the girls that based their personalities around liking 500 Days of Summer and shopping on modcloth, whereas the keffiyehs and skinny jeans was more on the “I swear I’m not a hipster” hipster side of things.

I’m old and I was part of all that, so I remember the distinction was there.

>> No.15957387

i have a theory it might be a bit far fetched but i think this might come back with full force post covid. Since covid will basically stick around forever, lockdowns will still be going on for quite a while. I think that covid will for sure have some sort of impact on fashion and subculture. The thing is that i've already noticed 25-30 olds (the generation sandwiched between zoomers and millenials) are starting to long for this aesthetic again and talking about it more and more, in the midst of reminiscing of the past due to having to stay at home. Covid makes us not only super nostalgic but also feel like the last few years of our 20s are going to waste. So once partying and socializing in public comes back (and who knows when that will be.. honestly i don't think before 2023) people will start to overcompensate for the "lost years", especially the late 20s age range. Bringing back stuff that reminds them of their teenage years and so on. Basically i think post covid fashion amongst young adults entering their 30s will be super influenced by nostalgia, like an early midlife crisis

you're right. it was more like 2010 than late 10s, but that's still a different wave than what OP posted. OP is straightup twee, as >>15957382 pointed out, whereas this black hat + cross style takes a bigger goth influence

I'm old enough to remember too. Twee was a distinct style but in reality most people are never defined by one look and there was loads of overlap. Maybe today there's more room for pure aesthetics like dark academia, now that you can embrace a super niche internet subculture. But back then it was all part of indie, 'authentic', festival goer and microbrew drinker monolithic culture. I'd add lumbersexuals to the list as well even though that eventually became it's own thing in workwear.

Twee definately was it's own thing but it only existed like that in movies like 500 Days of Summer. Which were adored by these people but very few of them were dressing like that every day with 0 modern tweaks.

>> No.15957402

>>15957387
and to add to that: changes in fashion are often driven by the state of the economy. Once this shit is somewhat over the economy will be fucked (at least here in germany, all shops are closed and have been closed for month and a lot of people have lost their job or are struggling to find a job if they graduated recently). Most of the old indie stuff is based on thrifting and a diy aesthetic, the more vintage and worn something looks the better so it's perfect for people who are broke. Meanwhile zoomers will go out and buy a new pair of airfoce the minute they are a bit creased or stained.

there where also more preppy and hyper feminin forms of twee (like op pic) and the more relaxed ones, long wild hair instead of perfect bun and bangs, no glasses, chucks or beat up boots instead of oxford shoes, band shirt and vintage cardigan instead of tailored sweater and peter pan collar, tote bag instead of vintage purse etc..

>> No.15957438

Fair point, but I was just pointing out that OP’s image was pretty representative of a particular strain.

> Twee definately was it's own thing but it only existed like that in movies like 500 Days of Summer. Which were adored by these people but very few of them were dressing like that every day with 0 modern tweaks

You’d be surprised. I was like that and so were a few of my friends. It wasn’t practical at all, but we’d do dumb shit like go for a walk in a forest in saddle shoes, ankle socks and dresses for the aesthetic and then complain when we came home covered in nettle stings and rolled ankles. A friend of mine didn’t own a single pair of trousers. Teenagers then were just as bad at going full hog into an impractical aesthetic as they are now.

I think that last comment is a bit too much of a generalisation. There's a pretty balanced split between the daddy's money three pairs of lightly worn af1's assholes and the dirt fucking poor thrifting and upcycling bunch. The general trend among the fashionable members of the latter group is a pair of good shoes, a nice jacket or two, and everything in between gotten cheap from wherever they can find it. I do think it's going to be far more popularised once this is "over" to look like a vintage band member who lives in his car and smokes cheap cigarettes for breakfast, but it's already pretty common.

I’m 28 and from a fairly rural area of the UK, and although we were being ridiculous we didn’t look too out of place, so I think it was the perfect breeding ground for it. (Teenage girls with no high street chains near but plenty of charity shops in affluent areas, so you buy a vintage dress and order some vintage looking shoes online then because of the area you have nothing else to do but wander around by trees taking photos in your dresses to put on tumblr with a grainy filter on later that day pretending that you’re Florence Welch)

I did see the other type you linked as well though, especially the girls who wanted to be Alexa Chung. That was probably the most common thing to see.

Interesting! I grew up working class in a large northern post industrial town so I was pretty far from the cultural zeitgeist in the opposite direction. Indie where I lived was defined by all those thousands of Arctic Monkeys/The Libertines clone bands, and their many white band tees. Even the hipster thing was less common here but you did see it, I think it was associated with London, places like Camden in the UK desu.

Fair, that makes sense then, different areas different experiences - even with the music. I knew quite a few people start shunning the stuff that was in NME and then listening to late 80s/early 90s stuff like The Field Mice and Heavenly and The Softies and basically anything K Records for some reason. Maybe because there wasn’t really anything that resembled a local scene so we adopted something else, idk.

We had quite a lot of the hipster types at the local sixth form college though, and I think that’s because there’d been loads of scene kids in the area and I’m guessing it was easy to morph from one to the other because they could keep the jeans.

Interesting to hear a different perspective on the era though and how it was different up north. Thanks for insight!

They're mentally just hipsters trying to find the new niche/purity spiraling by taking nostalgic influence from things that were around when they were young but were not old enough to really be into. Mid 2000s scene and emo are amongst the biggest inspirations in both the music they listen to and the way they dress.

Nah, I get why anon feels this nostalgia. The internet accelerated culture pretty quickly, and the amount of cultural information that's passed in 10 years is comparable to the amount of cultural memes that happened between, say 1950-1980. Double down. Tik tok is for uhh 13 plus? Yet it's filled with 9 year olds and all they see is girls being sluts for attention and and the rise of onlyfans.

Things will only get worse unless there is a massive backlash, usually from men to change the environment, but as they are the simps fuelling half the stuff, that will not happen.

We are just creating a land of pedo heaven, depressed single men throwing all their money away while masturbating in their rooms and mentally ill women who can only validate their own existence by attention sexually from simps while remaining childless.

I think it's because the whole thing was like an explosion of the underground after nearly a decade of culture being totally stunted by 9/11. Obviously emo and scene had happened in the meantime but they had pretty clear limitations to their popularity and viability as a youth movement, and they were very reactive and driven by shallow aesthetics.

After years of low rise bootcut jeans, bright coloured polos, calling each other faggots and arguing about whether killing 0.7 million Iraqis or 1 million was most patriotic something had to give eventually.

It's pretty clear what Hipsterdom was going for. Revival of authenticity, artisanship, pre synthetic materials. Rejection of the sterility of the 00s, especially after that era 'failed' with the 2008 financial crash. But most if it hasn't aged as a well as the twee ideal. Their brains had been melted by the 00s too afterall.

Lol man where did that come from. Pulling from 1960s mod styles is a natural addition to styles that were popular in the early 2010s because they were pulling from them then too with silhouettes and styling, so it makes sense that a brand that’s doing an updated kitsch version of that style calls back to its inspirations in a kind of over the top ironic way.

Each to their own. I think it works well because the shoes being heavier and more masculine than expected gives a pleasant contrast and highlights the menswear inspired touches of the outfit (the knee length shorts instead of a skirt, the shirt collar).

Yeah I wouldn’t really disagree - it’s not really my preference. But it seemed with posting because it is one of the branches twee went as its customer base “grew up” but I think the Sondeflor style of combining elements of twee like Peter Pan collars, the colour palettes, shirt dress details with the longer skirts, modest stylings and natural materials from a few other recent trends (that prairie dress craze recently and eco fashion movements) takes it a bit sister-wife and culty.

A few of the old twee lookbook.nuers and bloggers have gone that way though, like Rebecca from a Clothes Horse.

There’s elements of what was popular but presented in a way that’s either toned down so you don’t look weird wearing it when you’re 28, or played up in a referential way that makes it less likely to scream 2011.

Agree they’re not what the style was though, they’re not meant to be examples of that.

There is one thing defending your actual female friend, but if it's some stranger online and you're defending her because she is some pretty female then it's pathetic and sexist.

Off the top of my head:
-50s/60s beatnicks / Paris
-Prep
-80s British Alternative/Postpunk
-Late 80s/Early 90s Wealthy Americana Twin Peaks core
-Late 90s/early 00s indie folk bands like pic related
-2010ish Hipsters, all those indie movies

Aging millennials are truly the most pitiable and embarrassing thing to watch. It’s not that they hate zoomers and our fashion, it’s that they hate they’re not a part of it. They have severe Peter Pan syndrome and we are a huge reminder to them being or getting older. That’s why this thread is full of people desperate to bring back millennial styles because they don’t want to be reminded of their old age anymore. Millennials cannot accept getting older or mature properly because they’re entire generation is founded on childhood obsession. They will be like boomers but childish

I agree the music lasted way longer but scene as a style was looooong dead even in 2013. It's interesting because I think a lot of scene fashion split in two directions - some started wearing those kanye shades and created the most hideous look of the 21st century so far, the LMFAO swag thing from like 2011 or 2012.

The other side became hipster twee girls. Note how easy they could transition from that insane fucking 'racoon' hair (remember that?) to the Zooey Deschanel cut.

you couldn't be more wrong. why would i lie in complete anonymity? I'm genuinly glad that i grew up when i did and not in todays "youth cuture". Yes we are nostalgic and longing for the past but can you blame us in the midst of a pandemic that is robbing us of our last 'youthful years'? There is big difference between nostalgia for your own youth and trying to cling to you youth within a current generation. If anything looking at zoomers makes me even more aware of how dead real youth culture really is.
If what you said was true we'd be seeing a bunch of sad 30 year olds trying to look and act like egirls and eboys but no one likes this shit. Not evene zoomers themselves so their culture is based on generating fake nostalgia for eras they didn't even live through (90s, early 2000, scene culture). but they do it in the most vapid and empty way because that's what life in this hyperreal, consumerist internet era you grew up in is like. Empty vapid and lonely.

I genuinely have no idea what the difference is between an art hoe and egirl. I strongly suspect they only exist as a very small percentage of tik tok and instagram influencers. It feels like few women fall into any kind of subculture these days

art hoe is what /fa/ likes. egirl is what /fa/ hates.

Insofar as fashion there is no difference. It's just one is pejorative and one isn't.

art hoes wear mom jeans crop tops mustard yellow stuff art related accsessories like van Gogh socks, egirls look more like a scene kids y2k mixture and dress like literal hookers

Basically this but plenty of art hoes look like hookers too. The key difference is art hoes drew from 90s alternative fashion and egirls look like a mix of 00s weeb, y2k, emo, scene etc and what I can only describe as the aesthetics of modern amateur porn.

E-girls look edgier, when they wear bright colours it's got to be luminous, not pastel. They aren't wearing high rise jeans like art hoes. Less or no thrifting. Chains and anime shit. There's some overlap cause it's mostly the same people.

imo Dude Twee was just like.. 50's vintage. I related it to the Greatest Generation passing away and their affects moving back into circulation through vintage stores.

-preference for brown and brass accessories over black and silver
-non-jean work pants, but not exclusively
-thin collared shirts with small dot/gingham/madras/tartan patterns
-white/grey undershirt
-analog watch
-no rings or outwardly worn necklace
-one pair of beat, lived in leather shoes. any kind, wing tips, clarks, docs, berkenstocks, whatever is available and matches belt. This is the part that makes it "punk rock" Everything above should be complimentary to shoes. New shoes kills the look.

Used to date a girl that was the closest to a hybrid indie - arthoe. Vintage skirts, brightly coloured hand knit sweaters, penny loafers, oversized leather jackets, homemade jewelery, long dyed blue hair and lots of piercings. Was pretty fucking hot.

and depending on how your body is, skinny suspenders and cardigans.

It's not all that different from trad skinhead dress, but nothing should be tight. you should be able to move, run, jump, squat, freely.

I think there are 2010s today, music, people, aesthetics etc. but we're so used to just seeing mainstream things.

That's why the centralization of the internet to be a handful of huge social media sites is a bad thing.

There is so much more out there. This board is guilty of it too. Teenagers just come here and post what they have seen on the handful of big sites.

But cool movements are always better when small anyway, if 2010 was everywhere again and 16 year olds were riding that wave, it would be a turn off for a lot of people.

For me it's 2010, because I make it so. It just takes a handful of people to do that too and reject what is now and there will be a a mass of people bringing it back.

Should we post some period correct indie music to set the scene? Get your awful crosley record players turning and crack open a microbrew.

This is IMO the best folk record of all time if we're not counting more experimental stuff like the Microphones. Hugely underated, don't know how one voice and one guitar can breath so much atmosphere. I wish she still made music.
