>It’s impossible to look at the Audemars Piguet Diamond Outrage without going all slack-jawed. But that’s all within expectations because Audemars Piguet’s ambition from the outset was to leave you shell-shocked; the aim was to break the conventional rules of high jewellery crafting and to stretch the notion of audacity in jewellery design.

>Diamond Outrage is the third and final creation in a trilogy of high jewellery timepieces that debuted with Diamond Punk in 2015, followed by Diamond Fury in 2016.
>With increasing chutzpah, these cuff watches bring a heaping of badassery to an area that is often genteel and restrained.
>Yet they also link you back to the heritage of the brand: The Audemars Piguet Diamond Outrage derives its design from the snow-covered landscape of Vallee de Joux, home of Audemars Piguet. Gem-studded spikes in varying sizes instantly remind you of icy stalactites, which are beautiful but can also be deadly.
>Sculpted in white gold, they are covered with brilliant- or baguette-cut diamonds or blue sapphires set using several techniques including snow and invisible settings.
>A total of 9,923 brilliant-cut diamonds and 354 baguette-cut diamonds (approximately 65.91 carats) pave the full diamond version, while a whopping 11,043 brilliant-cut blue stones (approximately 65.47 carats) cover the sapphire version. And yes, this breathtaking high jewellery piece also tells the time; two sets of spikes open up, French window-style, to reveal a mirror-polished octagonal dial.

Your budget: under $1000
Watch type: As close to authentic flieger as possible (sterile dial, heat blued hands, onion crown, etc)
Movement: hand wound, or automatic as a much lower preference
Desired features: none, no complications at all period
Preferred strap option: idgaf i will add an aftermarket strap
Wrist size or desired watch size: 42mm or so

All the options I can find are either over $1k to CONUS and/or have shitter movements, branded dials, or the wrong crown. Why is it so fucking hard to get such a simple watch these days?

China-flu happens, everything closes, it's stuck at the place they send it to until probably June. They send it back saying they "can't find parts" (aka probably don't want to do it). After that I just said fuck it and a month later had them send it to Tag's "Vintage Workshop" because it's just a Viceroy Autavia and not THAT collectible compared to other old Heuers.

Not really watch-related or related to this conversation at all, but here's an example from my Eastern European country - I was looking at a simple wooden comb recently, it costs something like $0.5 on Ali, and the exact same thing imported by a German company, rebranded and stamped with their brand, and then imported into my country, is around $6-7. And it probably costs $0.01 to produce in China since they're selling it for $0.5 so yeah.

if they do a good job on the coating it should hold up quite well and the scratches will only be noticeable after 5+ years unless you're really banging it around. you'll only get minor microscratches on the surface that are not even visible unless you look closely and don't take the color off.
but when (and it's a matter of when, because it will) the coating starts scratching and wearing off, it will look like absolute shit.
and on top of that a blacked-out watch is just much less versatile. you would think that it makes your watch look all sleek and shit and it might at first but then your watch is fighting the textured coffee dial which is going for more of a high class look and trying to be the center of attention, and it will look off with many outfits because it'll just be like a big black metal cuff.

Worst case, you're getting a pajeet repainted dial with frankenwatch internals that manage to lose a minute a day. As long as you're not buying from india, it'll be alright most of the time.

A gold watch in a SS case is a little suspect though.

Citizen licensed out one of their old movements to India long ago and there are literally hundreds of millions of those movements still floating around out there with many parts used to redial them. This is from India, whether directly or not. Now you are getting a "Citizen" movement in that it is a 1:1 clone produced by Indians in India, but it's not an actual Citizen watch. Your best bet is to just look for "Citizen quartz watch" on eBay and filter out India. Then there is a filter option that lets you pick case sizes and there is one option that goes from 36-38mm. At that point there should be many options for vintage and contemporary models from $40-$100 but Citizen has always been a good deal so they might be a little beat up because the pristine ones have already been picked up

there are many soviet vintages on ebay for +-<$100. like tons
pobeda, raketa, poljot, luch...lots and lots of brands, and 80% of them will be smaller than 38. For example pic related is 35mm.
you can look through some here and then go search on ebay.
https://mroatman.wixsite.com/watches-of-the-ussr
but of course your mileage might vary, and you have to do research on the movement that is supposed to be inside and make sure its accurate, there are many frankens, its just the nature of the territory

now, if you just want a smaller watch and dont care about the vintage part, you can buy citizen tristars (highly recommended) and older seiko5s for $100+-. They are like 37mm. Theres also a small bambino at 36mm. The timex marlin handwind is 34. Seagull makes a bauhaus homage at 34 as well.

You are thinking of dress watch in the western terms. Small, understated, clean. In Asia dress watches are larger (up to 41mm) and more lively. They are meant to show off a bit. The Presage line is a dress watch line, they just have a different idea of what a dress watch is. For them, a dress watch is flamboyant and fancy which is why we have stuff like the Cocktail Time.

The links don't articulate well so you can't set it flat on your desk and they literally rub against each other and gouge themselves leaving deep scratches. The brushing on it is also dull and not sharp at all. Not to mention the gaping maw between the clasp and links. Also if you look at this picture, you'll notice that the gaps between each link are not consistent. What a disaster.

>....the key novelty introduced with the Longines Legend Diver Black PVD - the brand from St.Imier has covered the case with a thin PVD layer to help protect it from scratches and accidental shocks as much as possible. While I had, at Baselworld 2018, the watch in my hands, I was wondering why the brand had not opted for a DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) treatment, which is more refined than any PVD treatment and more resistant to scratches too.
>The answer to that question can be possibly found in the will to provide the case with a surface finish that is not too rough, since the DLC treatment is so rough compared to the PVD's one, that it could have potentially "diluted" the vintage feel of the watch, which is what has made a Legend Diver so popular. Moreover, the PVD treatment perfectly matches, in terms of color and tone, the lacquered dial and the case back design.

A bunch of NASA astronauts took personally-owned watches to space including for example a gold Rolex GMT Master. In fact, the first Speedmaster taken to space was a personally-owned watch that was not issued by NASA. The Bulova was a personally-owned watch that the particular astronaut brought as a backup and used on the third moonwalk of his mission when his Speedmaster failed at some point during the second moonwalk.

There were also some Russian watches brought to space by Soviet astronauts.

The Speedmaster is to my knowledge the only "standard issue" NASA-approved watch for "extravehicular activities" i.e., spacewalks, etc. but NASA allows astronauts to bring basically any watch they want along with them as a backup, which several have done.

Damn you too, spankin buckle. I encouraged my buddy to get a linen dial Lord Marvel just like that, I think the same exact one. Sent him a vintage Seiko NOS beads of rice bracelet I wasn't using, it's such a cool match. I really want a breguet numeral Seiko / GS, problem is for GS it's only Wako special editions that are impossible to find and mega expensive. Are there any cap gold Lord Marvels or are they all plated? I don't have any gold in my lineup yet...

The Omega Polaris is a weird one, I saw it on a watch friend's IG and fell in love with the "ancient aliens" vibe, then found out it was a lesser known Genta design, liked that it's very small since I have a small wrist, and I didn't have anything two-tone. Also, I need a couple of nicer "beater" quartzes that I can wear while riding my bike around and not stress out about damaging them. It wasn't that spendy, like $500.

The 114270 Explorer has been on my bucket list for a long time, I've just always loved the 3-6-9 dial, the proportions are perfect, it's just sort of the quintessential Rolex tool watch. I had a Smiths' Everest 36 that I got rid of because while it was close to the classic 1016 it was an homage to it just... wasn't quite the thing. Love the oyster bracelet, didn't have a Rolex yet and I'm not into dive watches so a Sub was out of the question. It was either this or a vintage Shantung dial OP. It popped up in unpolished condition with box and papers for a reasonable deal and I figured why not. Traded a 57GS 9F reissue that was just too similar to my other GSes, both modern and vintage, wanted a bit of variety in the collection.

Lots of shitters.
Keep the explorer and the snowflake.
Sell the rest and get a gold stunner.
Life's too short to wear ugly watches.
Genta design watches are UGLY.

There's much less wear and tear in a spring drive movement and more accurate. For more info check out craigshipp.com/grandseiko

I like GS's designs and I like both from a mechanical standpoint.

Kind of, it's more an issue with specific designs than high beats in general, tho they will get more wear over the same time period as a lower beat movement, as long as you get the thing serviced roughly as often as you are supposed to it's not going to be a problem.

>> No.15942534

>>15942520
That's the 4500 GS movement from the 70's. I have no idea how modern seiko hi beats are. These days the wear happens when the oil just evaporates, and it doesn't matter whether you've left it in a drawer for a decade or used it every day.

Chinesium flieger delivered. It's as advertised, a relatively well put together NH35 shitter with sterile flieger aesthetic and dog shit strap. Nothing to write home about but maybe the best value mechanical I've stumbled across.

They basically exist to rip off rolex but they so a great job at it. I had the ocean 1 39 and it was a really slick looking watch, probably closest looking to the sub as far as dial design as well. Bezel action on them is retardly tight very hard to use.

I think squale has more credibility to rip off rolex because at least they were a case maker of you give a shit about that.

The bottom leftmost Seiko is awesome, that's like a SARZ or something right? Has kind of a 62GS-esque case shape. Really nice overall collection anon. You def got a thing for flight watches. Do they get equal wrist time? I'd have a hard time not wearing that Seiko I mentioned all the time.

As much as I love Soviet watches, if that Anon is new to buying watches then he should avoid getting a Soviet watch for now in my opinion. For every solid Soviet watch there are 500 pieces of frankenised shit that will show up dead on arrival. It's just how it works unfortunately. Finding a good one is incredibly hard unless you know what to look for and know which sellers to avoid.

Don't feel badly, and appreciate the watches you have. It IS a waste of money at the end of the day, something to spend excess on, not skimp and save for. Only do it if you will 100% not notice or miss the cash.
