Almost all of Asia is new money. New money has no concept subtlety. To them, it is important to flaunt their wealth as much as possible to indicate their standing as "above" others. The West went through this stage a hundred years ago (give or take a few decades depending on country.)

They care about how they look and how others perceive them

it's really fascinating imo if you look up korean instagrams they also shoot great aesthetically pleasing pictures. white guys take pictures holding a fish up a camera. i think their huge pop culture takes a big part on this, also their obsession over idols, who always have to look the best.

Went to Korea last summer. Everyone looked the same, no unique sense of style/take (literaly identical outfits in muted colours). Women wearing fake lenses and tonnes of suncream/products to make their skin look whiter, gave a greasy/unclean look. Most Korean's did not look like popstars, and did not know how to take advantage of their features since they all tried to replicate the same style. Boy's try to do this 'cute' thing when they talk e.g. clap hands in excitement.

The suncream also has pigment to give the appearance of whiter skin, it gathers in the corners/folds of skin such as nose etc. I wear SPF every day but one without pigment. Korean skincare is very geared towards skin whitening.

thats a very unkind reading of his comment, the homogenization of architecture has been written about at great length, this doesn't mean theres no more good architecture but, cities for like the last 70 years or so have been looking more and more similar as city planners and politicians concerned with the cultural value of their city tried to get buildings designed by certain reknown architects. consider that Toronto has a building designed by Mies Van Der Rohe. while it's a lovely building, what connection does he have to the city and it's history?
