I honestly don't think it'd be do hard. It's not entirely different than "hipster" or "alt" fashion that's been popularized in the past years. I think the key is taking elements of it, the general silhouette, etc., and not go full on suspenders.
I made a grid here. I think you can wear this, or something similar (nevermind the specific brands), and it'd look totally normal if you did it right. Notice I avoided blue jeans, and bleachers, and suspenders, and chose a fabric bomber instead of nylon military one. etc.

There was never a sneaker that was associated with Skinheads until the samba in 85, but before that a go to for skins was the dunlop green flash trainer. They were worn since the start in 1968. One crew's fit was described, Donkey jackets, wite T shirt, pull over jumper, vietnam surplus pants, and the trainers. Fuckin A! I wrote this all out and posted it, and it just didn't post?
Anyway I decided to keep writing a bit more.
Skinhead style came about in the 60s as a combination of elements from British Mod style, American Ivy League (which had just made it's way across the pond, and Jamaican immigrant "Rudeboy" style. The hard-part in the short buzzcuts, actually comes from emulating the hairstyles of Soul, R+B, and Reggae musicians of the 1960s. Also the term "skinhead" wasn't used by them originally, but was rather a satirical name donned on them by others. That's how most subcultures get their names though. The shaved head, and other utilitarian aspects such as work boots and jeans, likely came about as a response to what working class skinheads viewed as the middle class privilege of the British Hippies. By the time the hippie thing made it to England, it had lost most of it's dirty homeless weirdo elements, and became a gaudy fashion and drug culture for middle class kids and suburbanites.
Another bit about the boots, remember all work boots back then essentially had that same vintage workboot design. Doc martens probably fell into popularity because they were pretty much the only work boots that had modern "comfiness" technology of any sort.
The only politics involved at this point was a sense of working-class unity. Not even in a labor union sort of way, but in a "We're all the poor kids that live in the projects." sort of way. This is how the combination of white British culture and Jamaican immigrant culture came about in the first place.

I think its important to put the first wave in context, makes it make a lot more sense. Skinheads came out of the backdrop of swinging london, people wearing paisley frockcoats and ascots with long bowl cuts and tight trousers. The image of a gang of kids in scuffed jeans and undershirts marching in boots that made them 3 inches taller would make a serious impression among the crowd

The mid 70s was a bit of an awkward phase for skinhead. A lot of the style's staples fell to the backdrop, people grew out their hair, and even wore flares. Much of the culture at this time, revolved around a staple of the British working-class; going to football matches, drinking, and starting fights.
This is also when the National Front began using skinhead subculture to recruit young people, and indoctrinating them with the racist views/right-wing politics. They saw a bunch of angry young kids, starting violence at football matches, and thought they seemed promising. They would go to football matches and hand out literature, and invite these kids to rallies they were holding in the countryside.
Musically, skinheads got really associated with football chants, and glam rock (like Slade nd Mott the Hoople), as well as basically whatever was in the pops at the time. Anything that mentioned violence was celebrating, like say Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting"

It’s a shitty scan but this is what hardline skins ended up looking like by the late 70s. Like a disco version of skins, with flairs, ultra high waisted pants, long gaudy coats, and huge collars. But at the same time, like you said, the vast majority went the way of suedes, with offshoots here and there like the soul scene and smoothies. The terraces were the only places you’d see docs and a bomber still.

The late 70s-early 80s saw another wave of skinhead revival through Punk music, by way of it giving birth to the sub genres of Two-Tone and Oi!
The silhouette of the style was much closer to original 60s skinheads (hair was shorter again, pants were straight leg again), but the clothes became more casual overall. Button up shirts, slacks, and dress coats mostly disappeared. Denim jeans became ubiquitous, boots became taller, more akin to combat boots than work boots. Bomber jackets and other military clothing were introduced to the style, as well as bleach splattered denim, a deliberate reference to camouflage patterns. T-shirts, especially band t-shirts became popular skinhead wear. Even knit wool sweaters, one of the "dressier" carry overs, sort've became unkempt and thrift-core looking. Tattoos also became very popular in this era of skinhead, especially in places that weren't previously acceptable in western society, such as the hands and the face. This is likely a byproduct of the skinhead attitude of being very brash about everything.
Two-Tone was an evolution of ska music, combined with the new energy of punk. The name two-tone is literally symbolic of the direct combination of white and black cultures. Many young skinheads in this scene viewed themselves as the direct inheritors of the original culture. Ironically enough this scene was just as inundated with right wing and racist skinheads as Oi!. This is where you'd find the sort've people sieg-heiling at their favorite two-tone bands (that had black members), and holding mentalities like "I 'ate pakis, but me black mates are alright"
Oi! music was a skinhead response to the "artiness" of 1st wave punk rock. Reducing it down to a simple aggressive rock sound, found more accessible by the working class. Most of the original Oi! bands were also apolitical, but found themselves with masses of far-right fans fueled by their aggressive music.

A lot of people, in retrospect, actually blame British mainstream media for sensationalizing the racism in skinhead subculture, which actually attracted more racist people to become a part of the subculture, making the situation worse.
Bands in the two-tone scene, like the Specials, essentially stopped playing shows, because they didn't want to participate in the racism and violence that their music had become a backdrop for.
Sham 69, one of the first Oi! bands, played the Rock Against racism concert, specifically to distance themselves from the racist elements, and attempt to reclaim the music and culture. In response, a bunch of far-right skinhead fans caused a huge ruckus, and Sham 69 actually stopped playing live to spite them.
Shortly after, a large Oi! show featuring many of the genres top bands was scheduled to take place in the predominantly south-asian neighborhood of Southhall. The night turned into a riot however, because the south-asian residents, mistakenly thought this event was a nazi skinhead rally, probably because the sensationalizing by the mainstream media.
Interestingly enough, when the mainstream media reported on this event, they made it seem like the skinheads started the riot.
This was essentially the nail in the coffin for most of the 1st wave Oi! bands, who stopped playing after this event.
In response, many of the first RAC Oi! bands, like Skrewdriver cropped up, embracing the new controversial image of the skinhead culture.

While all this was going on in England, both the 1st wave of Oi! music, and elements from the 80s version of skinhead style, found it's way across the pond, and found favor with the American Hardcore youth culture. Like Oi! music, American Hardcore was a stripped down response to the artiness of 1st wave punk, and even blended with Oi! with bands like Agnostic Front. In their own way, they responded to the gaudy fashions of 1st wave punk with a sort've thriftcore anti-fashion. There's a kinship here. This response to the gaudier side of punk mirrors the original skinhead response to the 60s hippie fashion. Elements of 80s skinhead style, specifically shaved heads, and boots, blended with the Hardcore Anti-Fashion, creating one of my personal favorite iterations of the style, which would inform the way I dressed, myself, during the punk and hardcore revival of the mid 2000s. More on that, and the period in between later today.

Anyone involved in the subculture is either totally LARPing like the past, or is some modern variant of that hardcore "anti-fashion", I'll get more into it, but essentially picture a non feminized version of 2010's hipster, but with mostly darker color palettes, and short cropped hair/clean shaven face. Also the latter group mostly self identifies with punk and hardcore, rather than full on claiming "Skinhead".

The late 80s-early 2000s saw a further fracturing of the subculture.
In the late 80s, in America, 2nd wave hardcore bands started including far-right influences and combining hardcore with RAC Oi! the same way bands like Agnostic Front had combined hardcore with non-racist Oi!. Bands of this type were bands like YDL.
Other 2nd wave hardcore bands further distanced themselves from the skinhead aesthetic, removing almost everything except the short cropped hair. The punkier edge of the hardcore spectrum, became even punkier, and further embraced outlandish aesthetics that had been worn my fans of genres like D-Beat in Europe.
This sub cultural void around Skinhead, left it open to be essentially totally coopted by Neo-Nazis
Around this time S.H.A.R.P. or Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice came into existence, as a direct response to the rising association of skinhead with racism. Basically a hardline attempt to take back the look and the name. These organizations really only existed in Major cities in the UK and US (London, New York), and didn't stop the racist skinhead culture from proliferating suburban and rural areas, where it became further obscured, and started embracing things like heavy metal.
The 90s saw a rise in violent clashes between SHARPs and Nazi Skins in many major cities, and the mainstream media consistently misreported these events as "Clashes within the Skinhead hate group" This both helped solidify skinheads' negative public image, as well as draw more people to the racist skinhead cause. Making the problem worse, yet again.
By the late 90s and early 2000s big media further immortalized the negative and racist caricature of Skinhead, by sensationalizing it in movies like American History X and The Believer.

The mid-late 2000s saw a big revival in Hardcore and Punk, and with it a big revival of Punk and Skinhead fashion styles. I was never really sure what caused this. Maybe "underground music" had been pretty successful coming through the 90s, and it was logical for it to circle back to it's roots after it's time in the commercial spotlight had ended. I don't know. These subcultures also got a pretty good amount of retrospective spotlight through a number of music documentaries that came out around this time. There were also films like This is England (pic related), Shane Meadow's semi auto-biographical film about growing up in the subculture in the early 80s. It actually does a good job at portraying both sides of what was going on with the subculture, so it's the one skinhead film I ever go out of my way to recommend.
I'm super thankful to this era, because it gave me the opportunity to be a part of things like subcultures and music scenes at exactly the right time in my life. That being said, a lot of the fashion was bordering on LARP throwback costumes. I was first attracted to the skinhead style because it was pretty utilitarian compared to the Casualties esque look of many of my friends. Even so, I still always leaned more towards dressing like the asian kid in this photo >>15766261
Than going full boots n braces, or claiming that I was a 'Skinhead".
Also many new young SHARPs, Hardcore Kids, and Punks took it upon themselves to violently expel Nazi Skins from any punk shows, and most places around their cities in general.
By the end of the 2000s and early 2010s, most other people in the punk scene toned down their style and started dressing more like that as well.

2010s-now
Coming into the early 2010s, the hipster and alt fashions that became popular were actually heavily influenced by punk-adjacent style, and I actually think there was a lot of overlap with trad skin style in general.
Grandpa sweaters and plaid shirts from the thrift store, straight and slim fit pants, Low-profile sneakers like Vans authentic actually have a pretty similar silhouette to loafers. Doc Martens even became popular again. In a lot of cases, you would've been just a short haircut away from looking like a skinhead.
Then more recently, in the last few years of the 2010s, we had fashion designers openly flirt with the aesthetic again, and culture publications finally come out and admit "Ok it wasn't a nazi thing all along and it looks pretty cool." (pic related is Yuri Pleskun for Bowen '17)
The flirtation didn't seem to last too long. I tend to think there's a bit of an active conspiracy against it. It's too accessible to the every man, and puts a bunch of grooming and maintenance industries in jeopardy.
However, we just saw this past spring, that when people didn't have access to their barbers, they defaulted to buzzcuts. i don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that we'll see a repeat phenomenon this year, or simply a bunch of people who stick with it from then.
I don't know what this means for skinhead style in general, but I sort've consider skinhead style simply as a short-haired, hard, utilitarian version, of whatever is currently stylish and fashionable, which makes me optimistic that it can keep reinventing itself into the future.

Here's a rare skinhead piece, the dunlop green flash trainer. It was worn all the way back in 68 with American army green trousers, white t shirt, pull over jumper (solid color), and donkey jackets by the skins around kilburn. Its a unique alternative skin look out of the early days, back when crews organized themselves with a more uniform look between the lads. Skinheads pretty much exclusively wear leather footwear, be it boots, sambas, loafers, brogues, ect. so its unusual to see canvas to say the least. Leather trainer's from the mod days were also popular (incidentally mods were the first subculture to wear sambas), so it could have been a way to separate themselves.

As for the hair, if you're not sure on the length, just start at a #4, then work your way down to a #3,#2,#1, and finally no guard but with the taper lever opened all the way, before you do a full on no guard. Even if you decide to no guard, I wouldn't razor shave it afterwards. everyone knows you shaved, cus you're balding, no point in hiding the stubble, and I think razor shaved looks autistic on anyone under 50. you can even try some things along the way like giving yourself a subtle taper. Like using the same guard, but having the taper level open all the way on the top of your head, and closed all the way around the bottom.

I was thinking why its hard to do a modern skinhead look without standing out much. I realized thats because theres not much to standout from. There's not really many codified looks outside of specific regions like Montana and stuff, and even then its just variations on a theme, a theme thats already very casual and very modular. The only way to stand out I see is either have a crew of skinned head boys to hang w or dress like a mainline, in-the-news type skin, bomber bracers docs.

His jacket from what I can tell, isn't a skinhead uniform jacket, but it's got generally the right shape. His jeans are dark instead of light or bleached. The only reason you can tell he's a skinhead is because buzzcuts weren't really mainstream until the 90s.

I shaved my head from a young age (military school) and have an aesthetic jaw. I went to a college with lots of black people (~65% black) and I wore an old black leather jacket, altama vulcanized leather boots, and indigo selvedge jeans with a green sandstone twill shirt underneath for the colder months. I just acted like a normal human being and I had zero problems.

For whatever reason, black women fucking loved the look and hit on me a lot. There was no racial connotations to their advances either, and I shaved my head damn near bald (clippers set to zero). I'm /fit/ though and would always exercise with the 7AM kinesiology class, so maybe that had something to do with it too since I didn't look like a hungry twink.

I think it can totally be done, but it might just take the right person. I didn't even know what a "skinhead" was.

>> No.15788730

Could be, but I almost think it looks like it has a zipper. Could be a zip trucker jacket? Most likely just a generic "jacket" that looks like it's halfway between a trucker and a harrington, and may or may not be leather. Either way I'm a big fan of the non-uniform skinhead look.
>>15788695
Maybe if it's all wool. If you need to wear it for necessity in the meantime, I think it'd be less noticeable with black pants and shoes.
>>15788702
Most black and brown people know the difference between neo-nazi skinheads and other types of skinheads, who they would just call "rockers". Had alot of gangbanger friends who called us "their rocker boys" but we never bothered explaining the whole bit. They understood in a way, but the actual word "skinhead" always stayed unspoken.

>> No.15788737

I was never called a "rocker" or a "rocker boy," and I can't say that they would know the diff between the types of looks. I didn't come from an area where people would really know about this kind of thing very much. I guess I also never understood guys who obsess over their hair. I'm not balding, and I shave my head and never had issues with women of any race. I have also never been called a "skinhead" despite having the literal skin of my head showing. Maybe it's because I never bloused the jeans or wore suspenders?

I think your on it. I’m sure this is something you could find in a local vintage or decent thrift.

I’m generally impressed with the impromptu configurations of some of the older photos in this thread. It really compliments the fact they were working with what was available to them at the time being mostly working class.

I think it would be interesting to see what would be the modern equivalent by todays availability in the local markets/thrift while sticking true to the staples.

>> No.15788778

>>15788737
I see. In most medium size cities or larger, in the the mid-atlantic and northeast parts of America, people know about this sorta stuff.
I think not blousing the jeans, not wearing suspenders, and the fact that you wear say a leather jacket instead of a nylon bomber, is what makes the difference.
Also, even if you weren't considered a "rocker" in the way I was, I think the combo of athletic white guy with buzzcut, dark jeans, and leather jacket has been a sort've "rock" stereotype look for awhile now. I use the term "rock" very loosely here, more as a term for this general sort've "edgy" white guy look, than anything to do with music.

the quality of clothes available today are way inferior than those of even 2 decades ago, so it is hard to say. Also, it was common for skins to save up for expensive items, since they were all general working trades most of them could afford expensive boots/an item, but it would cost like a month of wages. I mean, crombies were prevalent all the time, and even cheap knock offs at the time would still run up 70-80 bucks before inflation.
Workwear modern day is all associated with losers and skaters, Ive never seen it done with a shaved head so it might look tough. I know barncoats were popular back in 69, 70 and later in 77-80, and those are still fashionable today, but I dont think it would gel with the aesthetic. Skinhead is a weird mix between surplus military, work wear, and old school fashion from, like dad and grandpa's fashion, but worn youthfully and aggressively. Modern day skin probably needs to reflect the old formal (british) fashion still to some extant, but with the minimalist sharpness that the style always had. Its a shame modern work boats are ugly shits like timbs.

Other than never finding boots in my size, It'd probably be similar to what I wear. I shop mostly at thrift, and have always honored this general silhouette.
Black or grey slim or straight leg jeans. (the color preference is just a personal thing)
Thrifted knit sweaters, usually in darker or muted colors, unless I find one with like faire isle pattern or something, then I'll get bright.
Any flattish bottom low profile sneakers (adidas, pumas, vans, no names, whatever)
Lots of different jackets that have a general trucker or blouson shape.
(actual thick ass vintage wrangler denim jacket, leather A2 bomber, Weird wool workcoat sorta thing, that looks a little like an eisenhower era field jacket, redkap mechanic jacket, some weird leather jacket that was maybe for like fishing in from the 70s or 80s?, a few others trucker shaped oddballs.)
I also wear alot of thrifted flannels, but I don't think they really fit the style.
The key is just keep the silhouette in mind, and have an idea of what colored clothing items you will tolerate wearing.

I think clothes were just made better. Jeans were all high or mid rise, solid color, straight cut or tight. Dress shirts were made with better quality fabrics, cheap clothes were made to be durable rather than disposable. Like a cheap pair of boots, like monkey boots, would last a decade. Donkey jackets would last two decades. Doc martens were much more robust, the second hand market had expensive clothes sold cheap rather than the mountains of Walmart t shirts and prefaded biker jeans. That, and there was more of a culture of fashion that played a decent part in the economics of London, where there were easily accessible avenues in town filled with only clothing stores.

If you wanna try a different skinhead style, grafter's monkey boots.

I caved recently and got a pair of Corcoran boots for free that have yet to arrive, and I bought a pair of boots that Im hoping turn out good. They're a brogue pair of combats with a low, flat toe. 11 holes I think. Look sort of like a mix between a cowboy boot and docs from the pics, hope they're alright.

First time ive heard that, never heard that from blokes who were there in the 60's and 80's. wasn't for me personally, i guess it varied in different regions. Much like some didn't always have turn ups on there jeans. I liked wearing double denim with only the second button to the top being buttoned up like they did in northern england late 60's early 70s, seeing as i'm a northerner i imitated it. Gonna be honest, i got a bit bored of sticking to the rigid rules of skinhead style eventually, i still have elements of it but i'm more my own person now.

Be the wave.
Start casually. Get a shaved head or nice shirt crop, and pull off the skinhead sillouhette, but with items that are part of your towns culture.
Instead of British style button ups, wear vintage flannels or "western shirts" that have a nice tailored fit like a button up. Trucker Jackets should still gel in a deadhead town, and you can play with trucker jackets in other materials like corduroy and suede.
Knit sweaters and cardigans should be ubiquitous there anyway.
Just wear straight leg or slim fit jeans depending on your body type. That's pretty much a given anywhere.
Find some boots that look like the sortve doc shape but are more outdoorsy. Maybe even brown if you're wearing other brown leather or earth tone clothes.
Also replace shiny dress shoes loafers with suede moccasin loafers.
You can stay true to the sillouhette, but play with the materials, etc., And the semi familiarity might make it catch on.

and? skinhead style is a larger fitted button down collar shirt (3 finger they call it) with half inch to 1 inch braces, 1-4 hair guard and razor parting, no self respecting skin would have stubble like that and they usually only had sideburns.

>>15793255

In all fairness they are kind of unknown to anyone under the age of 45 in Britain now too, they just kind of disappeared. I did hear there was some imported to the us a long time ago but i don't know if its true, some german skins wore them and they were also somewhat popular in japan for some reason.

I mean I'm half fucking around, but also we have been talking about revamping and refreshing the style, by taking elements from it,but doing it differently. Not following the skinhead bible to a T.
He is dressed "smart" no denying that. And although his hair has got a taper, I'd say it's a 3 on top at most and a 1 at the bottom. I don't think that's a drastic enough taper to disqualify him from the look. In fact, depending on how your hair lays on your head, I think you can have as much as 1 inch on top, as long as the taperis gradual and not drastic. I do agree about crazy stubble like that, but mustaches have been brought into the look, especially in the 80s. Also tattoos in obnoxious places like neck face and hands have been part of the look since the 80s, although I think black tattoos are more part of the look than colorful sailor jerry ones.
