if they want to move up the chain they cannot rely on Sellita or even Miyota. Like I said the 400 is not their 1st inhouse calibre, it's not their 1st rodeo.

>Oris as a brand was formed in 1904 and from then until 1981 is said to have produced a total of 229 in-house made movement types. In 1982, Oris stopped making full movements but kept on making modules that would got over other movements. Until now all base movements have been Swiss ETA or Sellita. In 2014 Oris returned to a fully in-house made movement with the 110. Now in 2020 they further unveiled the calibre 400.

>One reason that brands today are eager to produce their own movements is because mechanical Swiss movements are becoming harder to source. The supply of ETA is unreliable to companies outside of the Swatch Group and alternatives such as Sellita are mostly booked with orders. Moving to the development and production of in-house made movements allows brands to remain independent and ensure sustainable production.

>> No.15686540

>>15686534
> a company with infinitely more funding and experience in fine mechanics and manufacturing that still struggled to make a reliable copy of 40+ years old ETA movements
I'm kind of actually confused on this one. Wouldn't making a new movement/copying an old one be relatively easy nowadays with how accessible all the info and manufactering is?

>> No.15686558

>>15686540
i guess the engineering of ETA is just fucked and for Oris they probably made the decision that making a new movement from scratch is better than trying to fix whatever inherent flaws are present in ETA. Its like coding, you know? instead of trying to fix the messed up "spaghetti code" sometimes its better to just scrap the whole thing and make it from new.

>relatively easy
i think its more than that, its not just copying the parts but it's also material engineering, like the exact alloy % and minute adjustments and even lubricants. If it was achievable we would see exact 1:1 clones of rolex movements for example coming out of china but even they cant do it

>> No.15686560

Does anyone agree that inhouse movements are dumb? For a movement, you look at three things : power reserve, accuracy, serviceability. Maybe antimagnetic if you're around magnetic fields strong enough to affect a watch a lot. Inhouse movements just means that you can't fix it anywhere else, a regulated movement will keep better time anyway. It has no inherent accuracy advantage, it's serviceability has disadvantage, amd power reserve is dependent on the movement, not it's 'inhouse-ness'.

Basically, inhouse movements are just used to justify high prices.

>> No.15686568

>>15686534
>In 1982, Oris stopped making full movements
From the 1970's on Oris tried to carry itself throughout the quartz crisis by making cheap Timex-like pin-lever movements. That limited know-how in movement design and manufacturing was most probably lost or became obsolete in more than three decades. It's like claiming that a car company that's been out of manufacturing since 1982 is entirely capable of designing and building a new cutting edge model from the scratch based on its past experience.
>Moving to the development and production of in-house made movements allows brands to remain independent and ensure sustainable production.
Yep, but it's a major gamble. ETA's vision for the industry's future is clear if bleak, you'll get a non-serviceable mechanical movement made in entirely robotized factories in your entry to mid-range shitter that they'll simply change every 8-10 years for a fixed price. What Oris is trying to achieve with a serviceable mechanical movement with 10 years service intervals is very, very ambitious.
>>15686540
Yeah, that's the point. It's imagined to be a relatively easy engineering/manufacturing task and yet Sellita still struggled despite having more funding and experience.

>> No.15686575

>>15686560
its an assertion of engineering instead of relying on 3rd parties. A brand without inhouse calibres is at the whim of the market and trends. Just look at Frank Muller. Once they were hot shit now they are nothing.

>>15686568
how can it be that hard? if people can do it in 1920 or whatever why can't they make a new one now? it doesn't have to be that complex.

Yes, unless these movements allows for a pretty slim watches or other features, if they are just a same thing but made by ourselves, then it is not worth from the utility point of view.

I would say in house movements are for watches you rarely use, not for daily use, just for weeked watches or even less wearing. if not, then you are exposed to the problems about servicing, that sometimes can take weeks and months. So if you go for the in house route you will need more watches.

And now I have a question about ETA, what will happen once they stop selling the movements, they will just sell parts for repairs or nothing about ETA at all?

That depends mostly on the user.If the wearer use it for its intended use, then its a tool watch, if the watch is used just as a watch outside of the area the watch should excel, then its not a tool watch and is more a jewelry piece that acts as a watch. It's the eternal meme, dive watch and never puts it into the water. If you actually use the watch then its ok, if you are larping then its not. The legibility thing, are you using it in environments in which you need that kind of legibility?, is your sight right?.

Help me out /wt/ - I'm on the hunt for an afforable sub-40mm diver. Autoplay videos.
Lack of online store or worse yet, a barely functionnal and outdated "find a retailer" page leading only to physical adresses of stores that may not even stock your products anymore. AD systems are completely obsolete and watchmakers are seriously cutting their potential margins by not selling directly online.

I don't know what it is with watchmakers not being able to make a good website. The only tolerable ones I've found were meranom, Lip's, Yema's and some microbrands that can't afford a shitty web designer to shove autoplay videos and stuff like that.

Depends what you mean by a microshitter. I own Rolex and Patek. I also own watches in that 'affordable' price range. At that price point the movement doesn't matter to me at all, as long as its not quartz, all that I care about is the dial and to a less extent the case size and shape. They are something that look good but you don't care what happens to them during daily wear.

I have a radio casio, yeah it tries to get a signal every day and it functions normally if it doesn't. It's a neat function while also bit gimmicky all things considered because it keeps good time anyways.

For reference I live in Stockholm which should be on the perimeter of the signal range. I couldn't get a signal while living in an apartment in the concrete jungle. However, I live in a suburb now and recieve my signal almost every night.

These radio signals are coming from dedicated broadcast towers to facilitate nationwide accurate timekeeping. It is a bit reduntant now when you have GPS time and almost everyone have internet connected phones and homes. Recently the american broadcast tower was slated for removal but it luckily recieved more funding.

Gears will be fine. The most delicate parts are the balance staff pivots, and those are protected by shock absorbing spring settings. I'd say that if you're wearing the watch, any shock that doesn't hurt your hand, your watch can likely take too. Just don't throw it out of the window.
Also you might knock some hands loose or something, but that's easy to fix.

There was a guy here who was hired by Rolex to work in their technical design team, or something like that. He posted his offer letter a couple years ago, where he had to relocate to Switzerland and everything. He would post incredible information on every Rolex movement, giving detailed explanations on how every bit and bob worked, how these movements can run for as long as 30 years without servicing, etc.

Is there any reason to buy San Martin over a $100 AE watch?

I feel like if you’re buying a homage you might as well not waste any money pretending it’s anything but a cheap knockoff.

If you’re interested, Orient makes the “M Force” series of automatic divers that are specifically engineered to be shock resistant. The movement is specially fitted to be suspended within the case to mitigate the effect of shock and vibration. Antimagnetism is a plus too. I wear mine for all workouts, hiking, and biking. It’s like a mechanical GShock equivalent

in the echelon of aliexpress brands, San Martin has one of the best manufacturing, and they know they can charge accordingly
also they are one of the few(only?) AE brands to offer ETA/SW200 for some of their higher models. Some of their watches cost like $900

the heirachy is something like san martin = heimdallr >pangani =parnis >guanqin> loreo = cadisen

Even if I were a multi-billionaire, I'd be hard-pressed to justify spending a million dollars on a watch like that. No doubt a lot of effort and craftsmanship goes into making those sort of watches, but the entire concept of wearing a million dollars on your wrist seems insane to me.

Got this one for around 4000. Considering the condition, and considering it was exactly the type I wanted (with gold wings, and black date display), I couldn't resist.
