The fragrance flowchart for beginners

>> No.15633833

>>15632799
>Profumum Roma Patchouly
I like dark stuff but it's just too much for me. This brings the darkest, most earthy and complex aspects of patchouli that one typically knows only from its sweet (often complementing rose) facets. Probably the second most gothic Profumum Roma after Arso. 8/10
>Profumum Roma Orangea
Absolutely stunning green, citrusy fragrance. Very poor performance for Profumum Roma though but it's to be expected given that it's made of natural ingredients and citrus are fond of being very short lasting. 8/10
>Profumum Roma Ichnusa
This is the fig winner of today. Imagine the zesty greenness of Xerjoff Nio mixed with figs taken from Diptyque's Philosykos but both with more natural ingredients and better blended. You'll end up with Ichnusa. There's also some herbal-green dustiness to it coming perhaps from hay. I copped a roll-on. 10/10
>Profumum Roma Audace
Nice smooth vetiver, 7/10
>Profumum Roma Antico Caruso
Soft sillage, but I definitely could get wafts after 9h. Quite nice and smooth but not particularly remarkable 6/10
>Profumum Roma Dulcis in Fundo
Performance is ridiculous. Both of my Uber drivers on the night I was testing it had to open windows despite wearing 2 sprays (and every full spray makes me choke on the moment of applications). It's so concentrated it also leaves trails on shirts. Very creamy, feminine drydown, 8/10
>Profumum Roma Acqua e Zucchero
More masculine and interesting than Dulcis in Fundo thanks to forest fruits. Not as creamy drydown as Dulcis in Fundo but as good vanilla-wise. 9/10
>Profumum Roma Dambrosia
It's alright fruity salad. Profumum accurately puts classical pictures of cornucopia on their marketing materials for Dambrosia. Heavy on figs but a bit too baroque-ish. There's too much happening here and I'm actually surprised that it's a Profumum Roma's fragrance. They're typically very minimalist with their means of expressions and you can't count more than 4 ingredients in their note breakdowns. 7/10

>> No.15633855

>>15633833
>Profumum Roma Arso
Imagine a pine forest that got burned down entirely. That's the smell day after. Austere smokey woody scent. Absolutely amazing stuff. 9/10
>Profumum Roma Acqua di Sale
The most realistic sea smell I've tried (and I tested many aquatics). You don't get here simply the salted water smell. You get it together with seaweed (with some camphor quality that some people don't like) and all of other nuances. The performance, like with most of PRs, is amazing. I get easily 8h+ of projection. 10/10
>Profumum Roma Acqua Viva
I remember testing it in Jovoy, Mayfair, Their official notes breakdown was:
>head: lemon
>heart: lemon
>base: lemon
and they were not wrong because it is basically a lemon soliflore. Imagine taking the most juicy lemon freshly out of a tree during a long summer somewhere at Amalfi coast in Italy and then scratching its skin with your nail. That's how Acqua Viva smells like. However, the more you smell the more slight nuances your nose pick up. There are definitely some woody and green undertones to it. Sadly, just like with Orangea the performance is moderate. 9/10
>Profumum Roma Ambra Aurea
When I got it, I was expecting an animalic monstrous ambegris bomb that will not be wearable based on what people were saying about it but to my nose it's quite different than that. What I get for the first 30minutes is actually ambery leather (ambery as in amber not ambegris). It's really snice and balanced, not reeking at all. I can also get incense, that together with amber gives it a bit of sweet edge, and some smooth labdanum with its more powdery facets. At this stage it reminds me a lot of Tauer Lonestar Memories and I was actually surprised how much its note breakdown is more accurate to what I get than Ambra Aurea's one on fragratica. That being said I think it's way better than Tauer and having certain edge making it stand out unlike Lonestar Memories that in my opinion is quite an unremarkable leather thingy.

>> No.15633870

>>15633855
>Profumum Roma Ambra Aurea cont'd
After 30 minutes I can start getting some saltiness which is the first omen of Ambra Aurea turning into an ambegris fragrance that I expected it to be. Vanilla-like sweetness comes out soon after and it starts reminding Ambre Lumiere a bit. After the first hour my mind is bouncing back and forth between amber and ambegris and I think that Ambra Aurea is actually a mix of both. Overall it's the best amber fragrance I've tried. 10/10
>Profumum Roma Olibanum
Breathtaking fresh (!) incense. 9/10
>Profumum Roma Fumidus
It goes without saying that Profumum Roma mastered smoky fragrances in all incarnations. Here you get a realistic smoky, peaty single malt whisky. 8/10
>Profumum Roma Sorriso
Profumum Roma's vanilla as known from Dulcis in Fundo meets chocolate and they have a child. Probs the best chocolate fragrance I put my nose on but it leans feminine. 8/10

Overall if I were you anon, I would like to try 5 PRs I would choose the following.
>Acqua di Sale
>Ichnusa
>Arso
>Ambra Aurea
>Acqua e Zucchero
It should give you a good feel for the brand and how they approach fresh, woody, oriental and gourmand scents. Let me know if you have any further questions or some of these are not available to sample so we can work out replacements.

To the other anon who was testing FM Promise: I think I figured it out. My SOTD is Tabacora Parfums's Salim Attar and it occurred to me that it was where Ropion might had took the inspiration from or at least it parallels his Promise heavily. It's special for at least two reasons. It was the first and only attar and rose+oud fragrance that made it to The Art and Olfaction Awards finals (that everyone in the industry follows). It already says something given that the niche market has been literally flooded with rose+oud frags over last 20 years. If you liked the idea of Promise but not execution then I'd suggest you trying Salim. It has amped up rose, no apple sweetness of Promise or animalic vibe you don't like but stays as heavy on cypriol that makes Promise with addition of deep dark oud and earthy patchouli. Beautiful stuff.

Stinkbugs. The stinkbug molecular theory.

Stinkbugs... an insect you learn quickly to write off as kind of a joke in elementary school, like a dung beetle, only less noticeable. Honestly, they only portray it as such because they don't want you to believe that certain objects are made of tiny, beyond microscopic stinkbugs, and not little universes like the cringe infinity theorum. Basically, it's what gives things their own smell; the arrangement of the little stinkbugs messes with your olfactory sensors in a different manner. This is why certain things smell different when inhaled quickly vs. slowly; it's because you're disrupting the poor little stinkbugs and changing their smell.

Careful what stinkbugs are in your parfum. Don't shake

>Rasasi La Yuqawam
def in the ballpark of Tuscan Leather, the leather note is almost the same, only the Rasasi is a bit sweeter and more 'watery'. I've yet to compare them side by side, but tuscan leather was drier, with leather note being more prominent. Doesn't smell like a cheap clone and has an ok performance
overall opinion: good

Okay so the best way I can describe this is that I recently got a patchouli citrus (lime) soap that has a really effervescent quality to it. I guess it's the lime here so I should be looking for a citrus based frag then.

I see. Fizzy is overall a quite rare quality among any perfume (ELDO Remarkable People is for undoubtedly an example of one - smells like Fanta) let alone patchouli-forward ones but let me think of something. Patchouli is for the most of the time quite dark, earthy note that doesn't go well with lighter ingredients. Pierre Guillaume Coze 02 is probably the closest to what you are looking for (and quite remarkable on its own). It's a cannabis+patch dominant scent with some refreshing pepper and sweetness. Lalique Hommage a l'homme Voyageur is a patchouli with a strong vetiver note that gives it a tranquil vibe that's rather leaning forward a sterile not fizzy scent but could be worth checking out. When it comes to mellow patch then there's way more possibilities. Psychedelique by Jovoy is perhaps my favorite one. It's a balsamic patchouli+vanilla scent with a comforting vanilla drydown.

People talk about fizz a lot in the Fragrantica reviews, might be a reason to finally check out ELDO.

I stopped by my local Sephora on the way home to smell some Serge Lutenses available there. Holy shit there's such a massive difference in quality between old and new releases. I tested La Religieuse, L'orpheline, Dent de Lait from the new (post 2015) releases and what the hell are these. The first two smell of laundry musk (L'orpheline has a a slight woody-incense twist but Passage d'Enfer absolutely moggs it) and the Dent de Lait despite promising notes (milk, metallic notes, incense, heliotrope and almond) smells literally like a synthetic fabric softener. Then I tried two early 2000s releases Datura Noir and Vetiver Orientale and Datura is a beautiful gourmand tuberose with floral undertones and the latter a chocolate vetiver that I seriously consider getting a decant of for the upcoming fall. Is La Couche du Diable the only great new SL release reminiscent of huge opulent orientals that this brand used to be fond of?

Me again. I just stumbled upon the new release of Gallagher Behold, Patchouli.
>Behold, Patchouli opens with a bright mélange of orange citruses, like bitter orange, blood orange, sweet orange, clementine, and Tunisian neroli. Then follows sparkling Oman frankincense, a cream soda accord, and rich, root-beer-like benzoin. Patchouli also tends to emit chocolate-like nuances, represented in Behold, Patchouli by a powdery chocolate accord. Sweetness is represented by honeyed amber and tonka bean. Rounding out the base is Australian sandalwood, and a regal, refined Tonkin musk accord. The Patchouli featured in Behold, Patchouli is an 8-year aged Indonesian patchouli which comprises over 10% of the fragrance concentrate.
Haven't tested it but citruses, 'sparkling' incense, cream soda accord and the rest of the description sound like something precisely you might be looking for. I haven't tried it but know other Gallagher frags and they're always high quality.

Ah, thanks for letting me know. I have the Gallagher sample set but not with me right now, so I'll give it another sniff. I also was really impressed by his stuff. Rose all Dae is legitimately incredible. I like Fineaplle and Eau Fraiche too, but I don't know if I can justify his prices. The goofy BLM email he sent a few months ago pissed me off a bit, but I'm not enough of a /pol/fag to get upset enough not to buy his stuff.

Does the le labo last though? I have no interest in buying from that hipster bullshit house, but I'll keep the option in mind.

>>15634976
I'll corroborate this. You've definitely smelled the 2020 before; it's very familiar and safe. The drydown is surprisingly nice, but there's no real reason to get it when there are many much more affordable, readily available, and actually somewhat interesting designer flagship homme scents.

Just found out LT's blog.
>Duchaufour’s Chypre Palatin ilustrates what happens when you do a proper job with a woody chypre, without over-egging the pudding as in Roja Dove’s Diaghilev. A fresh, handsome, complex start, a rich, warm middle and a lovely oakmoss drydown, all present and correct.
>I am not overly fond of sentimental white florals, the romance novels of perfumery, but I am bowled over by Cécile Zarokian’s Nuit Andalouse, a superb, soft, powdery gardenia that takes its place next to Harry Frémont’s Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia as one of the best in the genre.
>Fêtes Persanes, another Zarokian creation, is a lovely spicy-woody structure very much in the manner of Déclaration, but less overtly masculine, and with a soft, expensive-smelling drydown.

I know that Tuscan Leather is a very strong perfume, but does anyone else have sort of a hard time smelling it? I like it a lot when I'm wearing it, when it's kinda just lightly wafting up to your nose, but I feel like since it's so synthetic it makes you go anosmic/noseblind to it really quick if you're digging your nose into your wrist/arm. I'll add that I'm not at all sensitive to smells but I think it actually gives me a headache if I smell it too close.

Oh also earlier in a Saks department store I tried Noir Extreme and liked it, but when I checked YouTube reviews from when it came out they all complained about how weak it was. I don't think it's weak at all, did they possibly increase its strength?

Absolutely one of the best orientals ever created. I do think some of his frags aren’t worth it, like his super expensive chypres, Haute Luxe, Diaghilev, and Chypre Extraordinaire, I think Chypre Palatin is better than all of them and a fraction of the cost. I do think some of his main line frags are nothing special (like Vetiver), but a lot of his more eclectic creations are absolutely spectacular.

I think a lot of people are just contrarians or poorfags who immediately balk at anything in Roja’s price range, or perhaps some people just got samples of his core line, which again, aside from Enigma I find largely unremarkable, but to say his frags are all shit is just objectively incorrect.

Thoughts on Boss Bottled? I've been using it for like 12 years cus it's what my late father was using and I liked the more "mature" smell it had compared to the trash I was using when I was in middle school. However I'm not sure if it's that great of a smell to others and if there aren't superior versions with a similar kind of frgrance.
https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Hugo-Boss/Boss-Bottled-383.html

Also, how much parfume do you guys apply? I always do two spitzers on each side of the neck and one on my left wrist. I then rub my wrists together for a sec and then rub each wrist on their respective side of the neck where I sprayed the parfume. Is this too much? Are there better techniques for applying parfume?

L 'Erbolario is far from being a clone house like dua or alexandria and I wouldn't consider Meharees to be a clone either because it's missing the animalistic musk from Musc Ravegeur and it leans a bit more feminine but still very unisex . Cause it takes months to get stuff from Anna Zworykina due to Russian customs and postal service being abysmal and I wear a lot of it during the fall/winter so I got a backup bottle.

Sultan Leather Attar: Rose with heavy petroleum and dark leather smell created by mixing different types of stinky ouds . ( I think it has been changed because it was a lot stronger before but this new one is still a really good leather fragrances)

Oud Yaqoub: Fruity , floral and creamy oud oil not my favorite desu I think it would be great for girls.

Musc Royale: Deer musc aged in mysore sandalwood and that's exactly what it smells like. animalistic musc steeped in a creamy woody beautiful sandalwood. I love putting a line of this and a line of oud extraordinaire together and just smelling my hand for hours on end.

Aroha d'afrique/ khus d'afrique: pure vetiver oils that are both grassy sharp and woody and both have a bit of a sweet halva pastry smell to them on the exhale.

Jasmine: smells like you stepped into a greenhouse that grew nothing but Jasmine . You get the greenness from taking a huge sniff of a blooming jasmine flower at the same time there is a creaminess and a funkiness to it.

Oud Extrodinare: My favorite oud oil hands down. smells like extremely dark resin mixed with honey and incense I wish I bought backup bottles of this cause its all sold out now so I use it sparingly.

Post fragrances that would be 10/10 if they were just slightly different.

For me it's pic related, it's different enough to stand out but it has a twink-ish quality about it, if it had a darker note like tobacco/booze or some dark woods it would have been perfect. Would love to smell it on a woman tho

He’s flirting with being too repetitive but just about gets the length of his videos right. The bloke with the hat repeats himself way too much and I find him unwatchable because of it. I know they pad the videos for ad money but no thank you, I’m not watching all that.

It’s funny how a Jeremy has some of the shortest videos but is equally repetitive.
