Watch on the left: spent its entire life in a drawer, minty.
Watch on the right: worn to death and completely trashed before restoration. Just look at the hands and lume, even after restoration they're very grimy, the dial has been completely redone. The only salvageable part of this watch was the movement.
I get your point but this image is a really bad example of aging v restoration.

An update on my issues with the San Martin Nautilus (2824 clone PT5000): it still doesn’t seem to hold much in reserve. Despite being conscious of swinging it around in the proper manner for extended periods of time, and wearing it the whole day, it’s usually stopped when I wake up in the morning and often again later in the day. Today it stopped around 8am. I then proceeded to shake it about again, and it just stopped again at 1:30pm. I don’t have the same issues with my other NH35 shitters.

Service starts at around the same price I paid for the watch and I can’t be bothered with sending it back to China, so I’ll probably just have to treat it like a manual until the winding destroys the movement.

The watch he bought is obviously a very poorly made quartz chrono generic (the chrono dials don't even work)

I have the urge to put aside some $ to get him something nice but 1) don't want to offend him 2) am unsure as to whether there are watches similar in appearance that are mechanical or auto or if I should just be looking at quartz

Am in Brisbane, Australia if that helps

Can anyone recommend a watch similar to the Seiko SRPD39 but with some lume so I can read it in the dark? Is Lume common on this style of watch? My cheapo Walmart quartz has lume on the hands.

Budget up to $800
Style like this. Clean and elegant. White dial.
Automatic ideally
Really just clean white dial. Dates optional.
Preferably bracelet
I currently wear a 41.5 mm Dive style watch. Looks good. Can’t wear much bigger than that

the only mechanical chronos that exist now in that price range are the seagull ones, aka 1963 and its variants.
you can get a HKed 1963, a Sugess chrono, or a merkur FOD for ~$200-$300.

the rest are all mechaquartz/quartz, casio edifice has lots of them, seiko has some(flightmaster etc), microbrands like boldr has some.
for longevity and durability a quartz is probably better. The casio ones arent even expensive, like $150 or under.

At that price range, probably the best choice is quartz, unless you go the homage/chink route that have mechanical and cheap watches like Pagani design and others. There is also vostok watches and maybe mechanical chrono seagulls and other automatic seagulls.

But if you want your gift to be used a lot and the best option is quartz.
There are chronos on that price range, Check out Seiko, Casio Edifice,Citizen. Those brands have everything you need, so you only must know your final budget ,the type of watch your friend likes (classy,traditional,toolish,gaudy..) and your friend approximate wrist size, if he is a wristlet don't buy him something really big.

For example, pic related is around 180eur which is within your budget, it's a toolish watch, but Casio, Citizen and seiko also has other more classy options.Same for non chronos, you can have plenty of models, even solar powered watches from Citizen.

If you don't want to ofend your friend, just tell him something like

>Hey, I noticed you took interest in watches, so since you are my friend I want to contribute with something for your collection.
You don't need to tell him that his watch is an useless shitter, just gift him a nice watch and I'm pretty sure he will appreciate it more because the quality and because you gifted it to him.

Once you know the type of watch you want to buy you can post again and people will point you in some better directions, it's pretty hard recommending without knowing the type of watch you want to buy because there are tons of watches.

additionally I think that 37mm WW1 military watch is not the right size. The early ones were closer to 30mm, now I understand we live in different times. But I don't get why they immediately have to make it jumbo size. Why not take the middle road, especially considering they are an asian brand where men have smaller wrists.

It's probably a Japanese ad. Japanese know "English" but usually not how it's actually used in sentences. It's just a cool worldly exotic foreign language. So if an ad for watches is in English it's basically just to grab attention. It only has to make loose sense to Japanese. The people who this ad is targeted towards will be that it's a Cocktail Time, it's from Seiko, it was inspired by bars, there's something about a journey, getting away from the everyday, and it's Limited Edition. Then they'll unsheathe their credit card.
English in Japan is like random Japanese Kanji on things in America.

The industry takes decades until they catch up to the market demand. They will produce shit and be like: "here, this is what you wanted, right? now pay us 10 times the production costs because we are riding on the name heritage and we brought back some thing from half a century ago. what? we fucked up the proportions by adding half a centi to the diameter? you are just being a poorfag pleb.

Microbrands is where its at, IF you can find one that does everything correctly. Some do great cases, some do great dials, some do good proportions and aesthetics but fuck up the rest, some leave you hanging with a shit movement.

OK, I give up, the chinks have managed to confuse me.

So there's Steeldive, San Martin and Heimdallr.
Apparently Steeldive is lower quality and SM and Heim are the same.
But seems like Heim is much cheaper than SM, almost at steeldive prices.
And then there's Addies, which looks 100% like it's steeldive, but their 5-10 cheaper than steeldive.
Oh well.
But steeldive kinda has the coolest shit (pic related)
