The remake/reimagining/reissue is basically just the modern chunky marine master with a grand seiko highbeat movement and gilt finishings, it's also half the price and less than half the charm but at least it's not short on spare parts and repair technical expertise, which is ever dwindling with the original 6159.

In watches, you are mostly overpaying unless you are getting something really cheap like a vostok, cheapo orients, seagulls, casio beaters...for sure if you enter on the affordable luxury you are overpaying, it's been said that a rolex sub production cost is about 800, mrsp is way more than that, the brand holds its value, but you are paying more than you should, same with speedy, a watch that was cheap and now is expensive enough to be considered entry level luxury.

This. It's 2020. China touches everything that is even remotely mass produced in the watch world. A lot of even the most elite brands will use component groups that have Chinese origins. That being said, Chinese factories are very capable of producing top-shelf components and products. It all boils down to specifications, quality control and the ability of the company using those factories to control those factors. If you're leaving the Chinese to their own devices, you can rest assured a corner or twelve will be cut. If you have your own people in the factories at an oversite level you can keep them in line.

>Japan: Any Seiko or Citizen above $500
I don't know about citizen, but with seiko that's not necessarily true. The only Seiko's that are 100% made on the actual japanese islands is grand seiko, with the high end regular seiko shit ($2k+) being either actually wholly or partially made there too, jury's out in this case. More likely than not the latter is actually made there.
But the <$1000 stuff, or the cheap skx007 divers that say "made in japan"? No, but technically yes. They're made on what the japanese government deems japanese territory for the purposes of country of origin labels even if it's not actually anywhere near japan.
Casio recently opened another factory in japan so those expensive MR.G and MT-G shocks are made their, either partially or wholly (I'm not sure about the circuit boards etc)

>Germany: Nomos?
Probably. Though Brands like Sinn, Damasko, Tutima, Muehle Glasshuette, Archimede, Limes are either 100% or mostly german made; the ubiquitous ETA/Sellita movements being the things made wholly or partially or substantially in china. Some have their own manufacture calibers now though.

When it starts to exhibits faults in the timekeeping.
The regular service interval is a trick from manufacturers to squeeze out easy money from nervous cucks.
I'm not talking about the delicate grand complications here, so you achkshuualllly neckbeards can fuck off. Regular automatics are made to just keep going and going until they finally stop. This can take 5 years or 25 depending on the quality of the movement and how you used it. Bring it in for service and costs aren't dramatically different between 5 and 25. Rolex is like this.

im ok with or without; the sarb017 is the alpinist that comes to mind for most people now though. But yes the compass bezel is a quirky touch that make it what it is, though to be accurate super early alpinists did not have the compass as well.

it's a good question.
the most accurate watch movement in the world is a quartz movement in the Citizen Caliber. the titanium lists for $7,400 US and the white gold is several times that. it is a beautiful watch and I'd love to have one. that ought to set the outside limit on what the best quartz should cost, but this is a very unique watch; for anything else, I'd reckon the limit ought to be like maybe half that.
me personally? I'm a poorfag. I already have a quartz daily beater that I love and it only cost like $30. I might pay over $100 for one of the nice vintage seiko hi-beats, but I'm realistically never going to pay more than several hundred for any watch.

While that's true, Citizen's mechanical movements are nothing to laugh about either. There's some fairly cool vintage stuff in particular, driven by their close domestic competition with Seiko. Yes, their watches are very well designed and made but shit looking, but at the end of the day it's just gears in a small box that usually isn't designed to be underwater and hold high pressure. 100m water resistance is not really high, there are watches with way more than that, a simple 50m watch is just splash resistant, and maybe some risky quick bath.200m is probably the minimum for a safe bath in cold water. Good choice IMO. The Memovox movements are actually made by the top high complications section of JLC. How many other HH brands offer watches produced by their best and most experienced watch makers for less than $10k.

An alarm feature in a diver, such as the Polaris Memovox models, is very useful. You can still feel the vibration even if you can't hear it underwater.

what does it mean when a watch can hack?

That the seconds hand stops when you pull out the crown to set time.

>> No.15584166

>>15584158
but doesnt pulling out the crown stop the hour and minute hand from moving? or you mean theres a level for hacking and the level for setting time?

>> No.15584177

>>15584166

Nothing stops moving when you pull out the crown on a non hacking watch. If you wind them up, they just run until they're out, like a pendulum clock or anything similar. You pull out the crown so that you can move the hands, but it doesn't stop them, at least not the seconds hand.
