it's definitely a great cheapie. this reminds me of guerlain vetiver since both have sharp vetiver notes, although this one is a lot more fresh

Why do people sperg over Aventus this hard?
Bullshit marketing and company history.
Reformulation spergs that argue over x ingredient being banned (that wasn't actually in there in the first place).
"Batch variations" coming from Creed making it inconsistent to try and market it as "muh natural fragrance variations" at best and at worst downright rubbish QC.
"Muh Ambergris base!" Yeah fool the other one.
The best quality synthetic in there is velvione.
This is what happens when hype beasts with no idea about actual perfumery hail mediocre stuff as #THEKING

The annoying thing about him is that he just lists them off as if he is trying to prove something.
He can easily guess them too as most of what he lists are very commonly used.

Its clear that he barely knows about the actual history of perfumery, what new material created trends throughout the decades, and he outright has not smelled frags that most people into this sort of thing would have smelled within a couple of years.

He had two previous businesses that flopped, and one where he quotes himself as a master perfumer.

He is a joke.

Most (real) aventus batches are pretty good, though. Creed is a shit company but they managed to create something interesting with aventus that shook up the market somewhat. I would pay €100 for a bottle if I didn’t care about the ethics easily.
Also, they “may” have used more naturals early on go make the fragrance popular and once it was was popular and shifted to synthetics once it was stabilished. I do not have the technical knowledge to know, but this makes perfect comercial sense.
So far it is the only good creed I have come across. GIT is sort of trash and MI smells like sweat. Maybe I would like SMW or BdP like the other anon mentioned, idk.

I'm not really making an argument of naturals vs synthetics, but when people say shit like "oh the oakmoss regulations affected Aventus since batch blah blah" its bullcrap. Evernyl which provides an oakmoss-like impression has been in fashion since the 70's. The "natural birch tar" has been substituted for a few decades too. The only changes have been Creed cheapening out, not a reduction of naturals because of regulations.

Surprise! A "luxe" brand is driven by profit. Aventus never really reinvented the wheel, it was just marketed very well and driven by hype, since the beginning, and Creed just wanted to increase profit over the years. People are only crying foul now because Creed has been sold.

I'm not sure what being a perfumer has to do with smelling internet hyped fragrances. I've seen this used to somehow discredit him, but it is pretty weak. There are better things to say to discredit him than just that he hasn't bothered sniffing what you dweebs have smelled. Why does he need to know about trends if he is never going to be good enough to be hired by companies that care about trends.

>Lists them out as if he is trying to prove something.
LOL, you must prefer reviewers who read the notes that the marketing team says are in the fragrance when discussing it then.

That website doesn’t actually check for its authenticity. It just tries to parse the code in order to get a year of fabrication out of it. I just made up the batch GA5218Y69 and it gave “year of fabrication:2018”.
The killer point as to why his aventus is fake is the plastic bottle cap (should be mother o pearl), the weird defect on the label and the fact that all mentions of this batch on google are either of extremely shady sites or people trying to sell or trade their “99% full bottle of aventus”, as you can see here >>15575474

That is not the discussion, though. There are niche houses that employ mostly naturals, those that employ more naturals than average and those who employ mostly/exclusively synthetics and do so masterfully, like Xerjoff and ELDO.
>>15575586
Yeah, natural oakmoss isn’t that big of a deal, honestly, as it is one of the cheapest members of the realm of natural components, opposed to ambergris and flower absolutes. But they certainly could have cheapened our and the batch variation is evidence that they just get whatever is cheap at the time to make the frag, adhering to some minimal formula they have.

All right, guys. I might have a weird one for you. I visited my mom yesterday and found pic rel in a dresser drawer. I searched for Hommage de Firmenich but didn't find much besides a blank parfumo entry. Back in the eighties and nineties, my mom worked at a fairly successful international bank where she handled the accounts of corporations: credits lines, investments, loans, etc. Was Firmenich one of her clients and they gave this to her as a gift? The bottles all say 'not for resale,' and she says she doesn't remember getting them and didn't even know they were in there. I didn't even know Firmenich made any perfumes themselves. I could sell half of them and still have a solid collection but I like them so I keep them.

Gross. Namefags get the rope.

Why do you think you're more important than anyone else here?

Why is your comment, your opinion.. better than anyone elses.. so much so that you need to be permanently identifiable on an anonymous image board?

Why is your ego so out of whack? You are literally the cancer that makes anonymity pointless.. you remove every reason for the site to exist.

If you need persistent acknowledgement, namefag, I suggest you go karma whore on Reddit.

You are an enormous faggot. Extremely low IQ. Egotistical. Boring. Sad and pathetic.

Honestly really fucking good. I wish girls would wear shit like this again. I'd describe all of them as having the same floral-aldehyde core, but after smelling again I can say they are all different.
>left
this is the hardest to pick out individual notes, so I'll skip it for now
>middle
this is right up my alley. Smells like a richer version of CDG2 once the ink notes calms down: a sweet floral-aldehyde with a balsam-nitromusk undercurrent (similar to what I've smelled in Youth Dew or CP)
>right
This is the standard French floral perfume of the time, something I've definitely smelled from a Chanel or Boucheron: lemongrass, carnation, peony, jasmine. I'm getting scent memories of what the ladies would wear to church in the spring when I was a kid.

I think I'm done with the chart. I just need to do the write up for the middle section of the infographic. Pretty satisfied with the result: 56/83 fragrances here are designer and quality stuff, so the infographic should be really helpful for people who are just starting out with exploring their fragrance preferences. Let me know your thoughts; I'm gonna experiment a bit with changing the fonts for sure but apart from that I think it's quite alright for a non-vector infographic. When I put my nose to Kouros for the first time I didn’t get the piss. It smells fresh and clean in a kind of dirty way, but not like piss.

Today I tried early ‘90s Kouros. It smells like piss. But I adore it. I don’t adore the smell of piss, but it offers so much for a designer scent. Even though it’s been sitting around for 30 years it’s still enormous. It’s almost inconceivable that, if we go by designers today, that this really is a designer scent. Can you imagine the board room at YSL or Dior or Chanel if somebody suggested this scent if it never existed?

He had a clear vision; a good brief and he used his minimalist design and aesthetics for both the marketing and the bottle."

>According to the creator of this perfume, Maurice Rousel, he states Mr. Lang wanted a scent that smelled of his boyfriend's semen that had landed on clean sheets.

I think Helmut Lang's fragrance really is only suitable for those who are interested in his aesthetic. The minimalism of the late 90s and turn of the millennium.

Quite interesting how a name of a fragrance can drastically alter a community's perception of what it contains. Musc Ravageur immediately implants the idea that it is some ravaging musky scent just based on the name of it. People post their misconceptions on the internet and one after another people start repeating it ad nauseam. I wonder how the community would react to this fragrance if it was in a Jean Paul Gaultier bottle and called Fragile. I guess at the end of the day the "truth" doesn't matter. Our subjective perceptions of scent is the "truth".

>In 1998 while working with Master perfumer Maurice Roucel to recreate “the scent of his lover's sweat …erotic, musk, skin”, the designer fell in love with the musky floralcy of Givaudan's Velvione©, that was profusely poured into the base of Helmut Lang eau de parfum and cologne, both launched in 2000.

> But how does Velviona smell? A macrocyclic musk developed in the Givaudan labs, velvione© is inexpensive, alluring and above all musky in the best possible way. Think of that addictive baby skin scent everybody loves. Moreover velvione© is only barely animalic and favors a petal velvetiness that blends well in floral bouquets adding a captivating glow, so it perfectly fits the ‘90s cerebral clean vibe in fragrance. The prominent powdery radiance has a vintage connection, close to the retro elegance of nitromusks like must ketone (think of vintage a sheer Chanel No. 5 muskiness) which is an extension of Lang’s sober palette.

Wearing Helmut Lang Eau de Cologne now and it does have an addictive quality to it.

I still have the dry down of 2009 La Nuit de l'Homme on me, and the woody dry down is very present still and intoxicating. I might like this phase the best out of the entire progression of the fragrance. The bulk of the fragrance carries a slight androgynous tone. It has feminine lipsticky/makeup bag powdery elements reminiscent of Dior Homme Original, but this is apparently what gets the pussy wet. Narciso Rodriguez for Him for gloomy, Dali Pour Homme for dark, gloomy and mysterious, Ungaro III for straight up depressing darkness. Passage d'enfer and amouage figment man do a good job too. Here's the thing though, probably don't listen to me cause everyones got a different thing for whats depressing. A lot of people find roses gloomy for example V&C Pour Homme, Black aoud and a bunch others come up as depressing suggestions but rose doesn't do it for me. Other people say white lily, patchouli, but it comes down to you. Cold, medicinal stuff as well like Burning Barbershop, SL l'Orpheline, Humus (forgot the designer) and Lush's Breath of God could be depressing but i find them cold, numbing and apathetic.

Not a gateway in any sense. This should be released under a new name but Dior probably realized that the market for fresh-spicy synthetic woody smells is quite crowded with every designer having one including their very own Sauvage so they used the recognizability of the Homme line to jump the sales up without putting too much effort into marketing a new product. If you judge it on its own it's not necessarily bad and I'm saying it as a niche fag. I prefer it over BdC/Sauvage/Versaces but at the end of the day you get another generic 'modern' masculine scent.

> stereotypical modern masculine
I’d say it is a classical masculine frag since it built on a 50s citrus chypre blueprint without oakmoss. The perception and goal are the same: manly, fresh, clean, safe, inoffensive scent. And it is good, not a masterpiece but Demachy should receive something like an Engine and Propulsion System 2020 award for it. I am a moody and toxic person, nobody ever sit next to me willingly since 6th grade but I always get stupid fucking compliments how fresh the smell is.

Fucking stillborns with the baby duck syndrome, what’s the big news the 2020 iteration smells differently from the 2005 version? Where have they been last eight years? Demachy moved to the 2020 iteration in 2012 with a Sport version, continued with Eau for Men and almost finalized it with Sport 2017. It is virtually impossible to discriminate DH2020 from DHS2017 from an arm’s length distance.

Eh you got it backwards. It is rather the flavor of the decade. All the money put forward marketing the OG Sauvage and BdC conditioned the whole generation to believe that this is how you want to smell. Move back 30 years back and you have clean-dirty Kouros and huge leather-orientals as bestsellers. Move a decade/two back and you have 80s powerhouses in favor. You're overthinking it with the 'girls love it when a guy smells clean and stereotypically masculine' as the shower gel fragrances are very metrosexual (at the very least) in comparison to masculines of the past. If someone wants to ride the hype wave to the end then fine but I think shower gel fragrances have their best year behind them already - they became slowly 'cool' divorced dad's fragrances and every girl and guy in the age bracket 15-30 had some exposition to Sauvage. It's nothing new and exciting anymore, hence probably the Dior 2020 release to monetize the DNA a bit more, I've met girls who actually frown upon smelling like Sauvage.

Fragrances are like music. Each generation has what they think as sexy songs. Is it money put forward marketing the songs as sexy? Perhaps. Is it a backlash from wanting to be different than their previous generation? Perhaps. Will Sauvage and Bleu de Chanel eventually be out for the majority of girls? Definitely. Saying girls love it when a guy smells clean and stereotypically masculine is more of a simplification than anything else. It is a good question trying to figure out the longevity of certain scents as sexy or not. Is it realistic to think Sauvage and Bleu de Chanel will appeal to every single girl you meet? Definitely not. Anyone who is serious about getting pussy wet will have a couple of scents to cast a wider net. Here's my current line up:

- Sauvage
- Bleu de Chanel
- La Nuit de l'Homme
- Molecule 01

I'm missing the fresh and sweet category, but I'm at peace with it. I just don't like smelling Invictus, Eros or Ultra Male on me no matter how effective it can be. I don't like projecting that playful mood personally.

I think within 5 - 10 years Sauvage and Bleu de Chanel might go out of style. Until then, I'm milking it for as much as it has got. I'm not interested in being on the cutting edge. I rather go with the tried and true.

You made me seriously consider trying Pacific Rock Moss. I was initially thinking it was just Demi spewing bullshit since the community wasn't impressed. I'm also curious about Kiehl's Original Musk now. Interesting how my tastes are all over the place compared to the infographic.

I like Bvlgari Black and I am interested in trying Au Thé Vert. I like Eau Sauvage's top notes, and now I want something similar but less serious, so now I'm curious about Pacific Rock Moss. I like Dior Homme Original, but I'm not sure how it translates into my love for Colognes. It feels like it is more similar to my like of Eau Sauvage that lead me to wanting Eau de Cologne Imperiale. I will revisit my feelings towards Molecule 01 soon. There is a smoothness when I smell it. Reminds me of the idea of musk.

If anything, I think more people are trying to impose their opinions very strongly that it is wrong to wear fragrances for compliments. Ironically they try to paint people who do that as single minded, but I have other fragrances in my wardrobe that I wear strictly for myself, or strictly as an accessory to match my clothing for harmony. I don't think there is only 1 way that fragrances can be worn and appreciated. I think having multiple views on fragrances enriches more than detracts from the community. But I sense a lot of people who become unnecessarily butt hurt by differing viewpoints here.

>Kiehl's
I personally didn't love it (it smells laundry clean on my skin) but it's an interesting one because many others report that it smells on the dirty side of musks on their skin. Also cheap and really easy to find in any city, so a good starting point.

It's quite unique, so the arrows are defiitely not exploring all of the possibilities. I was thinking of including SL Iris Silver Mist (surprisingly masculine iris solifore) and Prada Infusion d'Homme but Lipstick Rose nicely fit for exploring the lipstickinness quality of Dior Homme. Notes are partly listed on fragrances there for marketing reasons and doesn't equal used ingredients in any sense. Then they get perpetuated by public on fragrantica in a form of a positive feedback loop. They're note identical or super similar but if you'd blind test both you'd get a very similar vibe (that is probably achieved using different ingredients etc). I was thinking about this long time ago when I tested Moustache for the first time. Interesting how much our mind influence what we think we smell.

The only thing on my radar from Prada is Luna Rossa Black. I'm curious of sampling that again.

I wanted to like Allure Homme Eau Extreme, but I just can't stand how boringly sweet it is without any edgy twist. I don't want to just smell fresh, sweet, and clean. A lot of the Armani Code flankers have such an annoying base note that makes me unable to tolerate wearing them myself. I might consider revisiting Armani Code again, but it didn't seem interesting enough to replace my La Nuit the last time I sampled it.

I'm a bit biased, but I've bought into the perfumers behind the scents. I like the fact that Bleu de Chanel was done by Jacques Polge, and that Sauvage was done by Francois Demachy. I can't deny that knowing this has impacted my judgement of the scents.

100% agree. The current formulation just smells like a leather fragrance to me on paper. I haven't tested it on skin, so maybe it somehow drastically changes into gasoline. Gasoline is pretty off-putting anyways.

Buy big bottles of scents that you:
1. will go through a lot of
2. don't want to deal with reformulations down the road
3. like the look of the bottle

Only buy small bottles of things that:
1. want to spend less money
2. don't mind reformulations if you need to re-buy it
3. won't be using it up in your life

>> No.15581212

Regarding reformulations, I recognize that I'm a bit of an extremist. If I can't get the original formulation of a scent, then I don't care about owning any of then it won't bother me to own any of the reformulated versions. They're all going to miss the mark and just merely have the same vibe as what the perfumer originally intended, so they're all just as good as each other.

I really like the patchouli in it, it's probably the best I've smelled. It kind of reminds me of Incident Diplomatique but they are definitely different enough to own both. It also has a really nice tangerine note.

I'm the same way. The perfume that really switched me over to not fucking around with reformulations was Muscs Koublai Khan. The new version is good, but after smelling the original it's pitiful by comparison. When perfume houses do shit like that it's immoral and dishonest. There should be regulations against it.

Anybody here try scentbird out? The idea seems cool, a frag sampling service would be cool to have before I commit to buying it, but I was wondering if it was generally trustworthy and if they have a wide array of drags to choose from.

I think they at least need to have a certain way to track that it is a different formula, so consumers know it is different. I understand that sometimes a product cannot be made the same way again, but the company can still sell a similar version of it and consumers are still happy to buy the "bootleg" version. I just want people to be informed and make informed decisions. I like how Dior has the formula code listed so that people know when it is a different formula. I do understand the counter argument that if people didn't like the scent from tester, they wouldn't have bought it anyways so why do we need to tell people we reformulated it? The one issue I'm 100% sold on is that it is wrong for the tester to be a different formula compared to what the store is selling. That's some bait-and-switch bullshit.
