I find it odd when non-rich people attempt to dress like this. Obviously there are some quality garments among them that are worth the investment on the grounds of that quality, but to emulate the entire look that is explicitly a tradition of the wealthy makes me think of peasants putting on aristocratic wigs and dress. That would seem ridiculous to most of anyone, yet classes unfortunately are still just about as separated as they were then - if anything gaps have only widened, in respects both financial and otherwise. The Ivy League institutions also always have been and still are majorly involved with wealth, funded largely by the well-off through donations and their children, being run by well-off people as well.

It seems to me the aesthetic goal is specifically to appear of wealthy and ivy-educated heritage, which is an odd "statement" if you aren't. And certainly not a wise use of money for those that aren't affluent, as many of the prep staples and brands are lavishly expensive, which only makes it even more odd.

You're a faggot. Fashion trends have traditionally been set by the upper classes. If a less affluent person wants to wear clothes that look nice, are well made, and pleases him to wear, why the fuck would you take issue? Do you think poor people are meant to look like shit? The goal isn't to appear wealthy - it's a certain aesthetic of clean casual-ness that lots of people appreciate, not just some daddy's boy queer such as yourself desperately trying to flout your parent's cash.

>> No.15528465

Post your fit. Practice what you preach, pussy.
>>15528396
For a style to be efficient you have to fit 3 criteria. Skill (how it fits, knowing how to combine colors and garments), confidence (self explanatory, how confident you are wearing said clothes) and occasion (your outfit needs to fit into whichever environment you're in, a farmer wouldn't wear a tuxedo in a ball, an aristocrat wouldn't wear overalls in a ball). Following the tip style religiously and applying it in everyday wear, even in academia, is a larp. No way around it in most occasions. However wearing tip clothes (brass button blazer, striped shirts, penny loafers, regimental ties) in itself is nothing peculiar if you live in a normal, urban environemnt. Seeing what you like from 50s students and taking inspiration is normal if it's applicable to your lifestyle. Eg, tweed and flannel suits are a lot more comfortable than fused polyester, high waisted trousers are lot more efficient than low waisted ones, roomier shirts look and feel more comfortable than non-iron skinny shit cutting your circulation etc. Only a fool or an ignorant person would go into a professional/academic environment and prefer the modern counterparts.
tl;dr Dress for the occasion, know what you're doing and be confident, you fucking imbecile.

You seem to have a highly autistic fixation with ultra high rise trousers, and that's fine. High rise trousers can be tip. Keyword "can". Just like high rise trousers can be sprezz, or athleisure, or streetwear. The size of the rise, is not what makes trousers TIP. It's the cut of the trousers overall, are they overly slim cut, in which case, they are cut in a way that showcasees your legs and body, then that is not TIP. That is Italian cuts. Italian menswear style cuts of blazers, trousers, coats, is NOT tip. That's literally the definining difference. TIP aesthetics come from a by-gone era, not modern era where almost all suits are now slim fit Italian cuts. That is not TIP.

Actually I wear mid rise most of the time, but I associate high rise with the stuff my grandpa was wearing.
The "difference" in your pic is about one or two inches in circumference for the clothes, I think that it's rather you who has an autistic fixation on loose fits.
Just like I can imagine an English suit with a tighter fit I can imagine an Italian suit with a looser fit.
It's not that one detail in a strict set of rules that decides whether it is TIP, but the overall impression.

I have a barbour jacket that looks almost exactly like that one + it´s mad old (at least from 1945, got a picture of my grand-grand-grand-father wearing it)...my grandfather used to wear it for hunting.

Either way, I haven´t worn it, so far, but it´d be kind of a pity to not have it refurbished and use it, so I´ve been thinking about how to style it since it´s absolutely not what I´d usually wear. It´s worn, a bit baggy due to sizing (grand-grand-grand-pa was fat as fuck, I´m wide, but not fat)

I´ve been thinking about buying a leather vest like this one - maybe this one, actually - and wearing it under the barbour-jacket, so the loose look looks intentional and wear both over wool suit pants, a white button-up and brown leather boots? Doc Martens probably, despite people on here hating them, since those are the only ones I have.

No idea if the look would work, tho and it´s not unexpensive to refurbish a barbour-jacket this old...

>> No.15530597

>>15530579
>shoes
For the shoes I'd suggest boots as you mentioned, doc martens are not ideal if you want to go for the authentic look but they work. Don't combine docs with suit pants. The ideal pair of boots should be brogued, brown derby boots.
>pants
The pants should be warm and practical but not cumbersome or formal. Best route is corduroys or flannel.
>top
You can wear a vest underneath but I would go with a heavy knit sweater with a shirt underneath, either a cream shirt, striped or check instead of a formal white.
>colors
Brown, beige, orange, yellow, burgundy, greens, navy, greys
I'm sure it's a nice jacket my man, especially if it stood the test of time. Wear it with pride above all else

In terms of the Fit, like which is most relaxed or slim fit, Trad Ivy or Prep can be relaxed or tight fitting. I think people here are conflating "Traditional" with "Classic". Classic Fits, refers to specific time periods in recent Western history, the past 100 years. Traditional Fits, refers to incredibly old, ancient knitting techniques, ornamentation, long-practiced generational rituals, the clothing that goes with these rituals, it's more about the actual item in question, and what its function is (as opposed to Classic Fit, which about the "style" and "cut" of any given item).

This is an issue of anyone trying to look like someting they're not. Trying to look rich while you're not is in fact stupid, I agree. But that goes way beyond just your clothes. Like when you see people taking pictures in front of luxury cars that dont belong to them. I think it is a valid criticism, but not in general. Only if people are actively posing, like someone is lying about going to an Ivy league school.

Now, >>15528655, >>15529877 provide good arguments. Wearing decent traditional clothes has not been a sign of wealth for ages. Its more about being respectable. I even appreciate when someone dresses like that with cheap clothes. Makes you feel they care about the appearence they project and that they can be trusted.

>$$$ doesn't matter in tuition, but in endowment it provides for better professors and more opportunities/technology

Cool! Post fit pics of your awesome Columbia™ sweatshirt on campus next to a diverse bunch of students all smiling! Your future success is absolutely guaranteed because you paid more money to go to a prestigious school!

>> No.15537421

>>15537403
You are right that future success isn't guaranteed coming from a prestigious university. Just simply paying the tuition isn't enough to secure a high paying job. But you have more avenues to succeed coming out of Harvard than say, Western Virginia or Alabama. For a consulting firm or investment bank, they'll offer perhaps guaranteed spots to a certain number of Harvard grads. On Alabama, you'd have to apply under non target recruiting which reduces the chance of being noticed and relative there's much less spots available for candidates.
That's just programs available to undergraduates of both schools. Top PE firms recruit basically only out of Harvard, Yale, and Wharton for undergraduate positions. Those jobs aren't even available for non targets.
JDs and MBAs are also a prestige whore fest. If you go outside the top 30 programs, the RoI just isn't there.

>> No.15537430

virtually no one who goes to these universities thinks their success is "guaranteed" by any reasonable metric. If you want to back up your point, you can post relevant data/polls from college student "success" expectatios (however you want to define it) vs. actual outcomes. You won't tho, lmao.
