I just bought a 10ml of vintage MKK. I have a partial Gratte Ciel(?) bottle (only around 8ml). I can't decide anything before I test them side by side but would it be a bad idea to Frankenstein them together? The Gratte Ciel bottle's atomizer is screw-off, not crimped. My thinking on that is if the vintage version really is overly animalic, maybe the new formulation would balance it out, but it's probably a terrible idea.

Could any of you give me general advice on cheap cologne? An example of what I mean is one day I was given cologne as someone who never used it. I just put on a ton without care and smelled good. Then that one ran out and I used a different cheap cologne I was given. Realized "too much cologne" isn't bullshit and very real. So what I learned was that this "heavier" musky vanilla scent is better to use lightly. Looking at cheap cologne reviews I fount out there's even levels of wearing certain scents on certain weather.
I'm someone who works at a factory mostly in the hot side.
And I know I should probably spend hundreds but I'd rather just learn how to apply a proper amount and in what environment.

Tom Ford Ombre Leather sounds up your street. Very smooth, VERY leathery, very masculine although I must admit, has the potential to be polarising as it feels pretty grown up and that can be kind of intimidating for some guys. To me this just smells like straight up leather, it's fantastic. Definitely smoother rather than sharp, which is what you'd like for winter.

Montblanc Explorer is also pretty universal and is probably the best Creed Aventus clone out there, which I'm sure you've heard of. Timeless masculine DNA and nothing polarising about it, pretty much smells like a modern man in the best possible way. Very woody and mass appealing.

May I also recommend Boss Bottled intense, smells like a very well to do man, definitely suited for winter and definitely a beginner fragrance. Has an apple pie vibe which is very appealing and definitely falls along smooth rather than sharp.

Usually cheaply made bullshit. A few can be very good, but most of these clone houses are literally Pajeets or Arabs buying the cheapest aromachemicals they can find online and mixing them in their garage. I mean, Dua churns out dozens of new scents a year, there’s no way they can possibly be high quality. Plus, to me, buying knockoffs in general just feels cheap and tacky. Like, the point of having a LV bag is to have the prestige of owning a LV bag, no? Doesn’t owning a fake one totally diminish that? If you want one that bad, save up and buy the real thing. Honestly I don't know if there's a difference at this point. Zara no.9 for example smells EXACTLY like Valentino Uomo, I mean possibly even better. Is it marketed as such though? No. So is it a clone? I still think so.

There are some incredibly good clones, I mean some that I think beat the originals, There are also a lot of cheap shitters that you should avoid wherever possible.

I mean, everything is nowadays. Reformulation after reformulation, watering down and corner cutting. At least for frags that are being cloned, popular stuff.

I understand your sentiment. Personally, if the clone doesn't smell cheap I don't care. I have no loyalty to gigantic brands, and the majority of people that smell you will have no idea (with a good clone of course).

>What do you think people would think of you if they found out the bag you’ve been flaunting everywhere is fake?
Normies? They will think "wow, I had no idea. Where can I get one?". I have firsthand experience with this. I have a few fake designer belts I picked up in Vietnam. Very few people comment on them, and the ones that do are surprised they're fake (I outright tell them). No one cares.

Trying out Amouage - Overture Man today since I got the sample in the mail. I already know I'm going to wear this a lot in winter, it's such a cozy scent. A lot of myrrh, a lot of cognac, great sandalwood backing, and some funky animalics to back it up. Then there are hints of saffron and spices, specifically cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg, that you can feel throughout. It kind of reminds me of mulled wine somehow, in the best way.

I've had the Overture on since posting that and unfortunately I'm not too big of a fan of the drydown. You definitely have to try it on skin to see if you like it, the opening had all those things I wrote but the drydown is unbelievably smelly, a lot of animalics and cumin making it BO central. For some people this drydown would be great but for me it's a but too much.

Seems like half of fragheads say ambroxan smells disgusting. If the molecule is so controversial, then why are fragrances that are loaded with it considered safe, mass appealing, panty-dropping, mainstream, etc.? If half of people truly find it disgusting, then it sounds not very mass appealing.

Anyway here is a straw poll: Do you like ambroxan?

It's not disgusting as in vomit-inducing but rather as in prevalent, overdone and having this awful property that it's both very loud and also almost immediately drilling your nose. I know that some people get headaches from it, too (just like from other chemicals like ISO E Super) but it's only a small percentage. I also wouldn't say that it's mass appealing, panty-dropping per se but rather used in mainstream 'blue' fragrances that are marketed as such hence the connotation. For example Ambre Royal by Ormonde Jayne is an amazing quality niche floral scent with a big dose of ambroxan that costs ca. $300 and completely different from Sauvage and others.

I don't find it disgusting or mind it in small percentages, it is only when a frag is as you said it loaded with the thing that it causes me somewhat of a sensory overload resulting in a temporary sharp headache. Many cheap deodorants and body sprays will also do this to me so I subconsciously view ambroxan-loaded frags as "cheap smelling", despite cases where it was is masterfully and with taste.
>then why are fragrances that are loaded with it considered safe, mass appealing, panty-dropping, mainstream, etc.?
Pure marketing. Mythic pheromone molecule that makes women wet is a great pitch to sell perfume to men and it's not the first molecule that was pushed as such, it's an old trick. It is not mere coincidence that fragrances that have lots of ambroxan are also the heavily-advertised ones.

Eh that's complicated. In theory it should work just as you're saying, in practice there are EDTs that last way longer than EDPs or Extraits because they typically don't just increase the concentration but change the fragrance in this or other way. 'Intense' is purely a marketing term. You should really just try to sample them or spray in a shop and see how they work with your skin.
