"I received my new Orient watch today and I'm finding that the rotor makes a distinctive rattling sound--I can definitely feel it wobble as well, much more than any other watch I've had, when you move the watch around a bit it's pretty loud as you can clearly hear it from across the room. Does everyone accept this as normal w/ Orient's watches--"

>I've handled 2 Orient watches, both not mine. I realized that the rotor is really loud and i can feel it moving.. it has this 'springy' feeling to it and guess what, i love it.

>Yeah, based on my Worldtimer I'd definitely say the wobble and noise are "features" and not "bugs". It is a very efficient winder as well. :-!

>Orient non hacking non winding movements have a unique sound when winding, sounds like the watch is full of water. I love the sound I love the wobble. They wind in both directions but from what I understand the swiss movements wind in one direction only.

>I like the feel of the wobble and the sound of the whirl my Orients make. I only have two Orients and they both provide me with their coolnest when I wind them, so I can only hope they all do it. Others spend hundreds, even thousands to by a watch with an ETA 7750 movement just to get the wobble and whirl. Just think how much money you have saved to get that high end feel.

there is flexible transparent pourable resin, so you *could* make a DIY mold and restore it i think...if you really want to
i have seen another anon here with the same watch, and his is on a 3rd party strap as well. So it seems like the OG straps are prone to inevitable deterioration .

First time buyer here. I want a nice elegant GMT (non-diver) for the office. Should I blow my budget on one good one (3000$)? Or should I get a 500$ one for daily use? Some anon said if you use a watch daily, then buy an expensive one. I'm not planning on creating a huge collection short term, I would be fine with a one watch collection for a while. Maybe I get a beater for working out or something but that's not important for budget. I'm currently thinking of a new Sinn 6060. It would be my entire budget almost. But I read on some other boomer forums that the price/value is bad on this, can anyone give their opinion on it?

i'd be terrified to wear an truly expensive watch daily. Imagine going about and accidentally hitting it on a handrail or something. most daily beaters that people wear arent expensive, no fear in actually wearing and not having to baby it

well the argument is that if you wear something daily, you get the most value out of it. so if you buy something that has the highest value, you get the most value from wearing it constantly. it's just an office job, nothing manual. I think I can take care of it, especially if it slips under the shirt easily.

I don’t get this. Once you’ve bought the watch the money is already gone. Even in the worst case scenario where the watch is completely destroyed, you’re just out of the money you already budgeted for the watch and can go back to wearing your Casio. This assumes you didn’t spend more than you can afford.
Watches are meant to be enjoyed, regardless of the price.

no it's not at all. think about it, if you're consistent your risk doesn't suddenly shoot up just because you're driving a different car. (setting aside driving ability and performance because that doesn't apply to watches obviously) locking something away in a safe for special occasions is retarded. if the shit you own regularly ends up in beat up order then stop being a clumsy fuck, otherwise service every 3-4 years for cleaning and you'll be fine. good example is mobile phones, most people i know who aren't retards have never broken their phone from dropping it. yet we all know people who always seem to have a broken or cracked screen. you can wear a rolex and manage the risk to it otherwise no one would wear them.

I feel like Spring Drive is objectively superior in every way unless you want pure mechanical muh soul bullshit. The only thing bad about Spring Drive is that, most likely, there will be no way to service it besides sending it to GS. But Spring Drive seems like it's not that prone to wear so this issue may come up like twice in your entire lifetime.
Hi-Beats are annoying to service too but there are probably independent watch repairers who can do it so you're not forced to send it to Seiko. I'm not sure how GS Hi-Beats are done, because they might have some cutting edge technology and engineering put into theirs, but high beat movements inherently have a lot of wear because they're literally beating faster, so the ease of service is offset by you likely having to service it more... though if the movement is as they say, you will still be able to go 10+ years without needing to service it.

>> No.15511280

>>15511270
no but you bought the strap (and therefore the keeper) so now you are their owner. As their owner you are fully responsible for their well being, this is an unspoken contract. It'd be sad that the keeper was created to hold a strap in and now it will never get to do it. As it lies in the trash or in a dark drawer its feelings of dejection would be immense.

It seems that in today's day and age everything is disposable now. Society has truly become callous and cold.

Great post my friend.
I like watches for the horological aspect of them. Tiny fucking machines ticking away as accurate as they are and all that. So obviously hi-beat is cool as it's pure automatic. But you're correct about the servicing and beating faster stuff.
Spring drive is as fuck and it's crazy accurate, so that's obviously cool to think about too.

As much as high beats intrigue me, Spring Drive is so unique and the story behind it is so cool. High beats are classic watchmaking pushed to the limit, Spring Drive is the creation of something totally new, one guy's brainchild 30 years in the making, harmonizing the past and present. It's seriously cool and it pisses me off when people say it's "just quartz." I want a Spring Drive myself but the money is tight because of COVID so I had to back off. But I was able to see one at a boutique in my city and the way the second hand just floats across the dial is really something else.

Is Sellita the redpilled movement of choice for sticking it to Swatch group jewry? Talked to my local watchmaker today and he says that Sellita's actually sorted out some of the known issues with the ETA 2824-2, like the delicate winding, apparently by putting an extra jewel below the ratchet wheel. He wouldn't comment on the overall reliability of both, but said that he generally sees less Sellitas coming in due to wear from handwinding.

HB. SD is an answer to a question nobody asked, 30 years after the question was even remotely relevant.
Both have to be sent back to jp to be serviced, though seiko is training watchmakers that can handle certain things about both kinds of movements but it depends on your region. Likelihood is that if it's just a routine service it can be done domestically, unless you live in whogivesafuckistan or something.
I don't deny how interesting SD is, but the fact that at the end of the day it relies on an integrated circuit rather than "just" a handful of tiny metal gears and a spring bothers me. I find the latter's ability to tell the time via such a "basic" and time honoured fashion far more interesting than something which relies on the intricacies of modern technology.

Does the SD movement's electrical components contain non-lead solder?
I'd be more inclined to just skip the middle man go for a GS quartz. Though, even then, citizen's chronomasters are more interesting than GS quartz and have arguably superior movements. Or did. I don't know whether or not seiko's come out with anything new on that front recently.

they are the perfect entry to luxury watches but you can go pretty high with them as well, great build quality, family owned for over a century, make every movement into their own with cute gimmicks and objective improvements (patents). basically you get extremely good value for what you pay for i think, really fair prices and they are independent. love to support manufacturers like that. compare that to glashütte original or union, both swatch assets. i see them as alange und söhne's little brother.

>Lead in solder isn't even dangerous unless you consume the toxic fumes when soldering it.
Tell that to the dumb cunts in brussels.

Actually the worry about lead free solder is because non-lead solder is absolute shit that ensures that manufacturers' planned obsolescence comes to fruition one way or another.
Lead free solder will fail within the next 15 to 20 years.
It is 100% ass and any electrician will tell you so.
This is why older electronics just keep working, and modern crap is all destined for the scrap heap.
The EU, in its infinite "wisdom", decided that ANY item sold in the EU has to have lead-free solder. This was in either 2005 or 09. Ironically creating a situation where large amounts e-waste is guaranteed. Lmao.
Because of this statute all mass consumer electronic items have converted to lead free solder a while ago and thus all have a definite expiry date. This is the worry with the SD. The idea that it might have something that is guaranteed to shit the bed is not something you want to think about in the realm of luxury watches. Hence why luxury electronics is a dumb idea as it's all ephemeral.

You have to reassess your definitions. A shitter doesn't only mean that the watch is some $2 free shipping watch off taobao that'll break in month's time.
It's a "shitter" in that it's a nothing brand that offers no real horological nor real world monetary value because it's effectively worth 0 after you've bought it. You've dumped a lump of money on something that's aping another brand that you probably really want and all you have to show for it is a chinese made watch and some leddit wristshots and the cozy feeling that you've followed in the footsteps of some youtube shill. It's essentially a junk food watch that relies on the shillage of faggots like that guy in order to make sales. DESU no matter what you think of their quality or value this fact alone should make you wary.
In that regard it's "a shitter".

Junk food doesn't necessarily all taste bad though. If you like it that much buy it. But note that the people that buy endless shitters end up with one of those cheapo watch display boxes the got off massdrop full of crap they'll never wear again because they lacked the impulse control to save for something that they truly wanted. As long as you don't fall into that trap then do whatever, unless that's specifically your goal all along.

Remember: nobody really gives a shit what you wear on your wrist IRL. If you move in the circles of people that do notice/care then you certainly wouldn't be posting in this shitfest of all places; you'd already have bought some tacky crap. Or just bought an apple watch.

I'm not familiar with their current lines but their higher end models used to have serviceable swiss movements, sapphire crystals and titanium cases, with the materials and finishing well above the level of fashion shitters.

Surely a peg or something going into a hole drilled in the dial would prevent this. I mean, if I was this bad at chapter ring alignment, I'd just get rid of the fucking things or print markers on the dial.

I'm getting a Hirsch Ranger for my black Sarb 33, can I get the brown one or should it match the dial?
