Why doesn't the USA have a big mechanical watch industry? Seems like if any country would be known for watches, it would be the USA. How did luxury watches end up mostly coming just from Switzerland, Germany and Japan?

ID on this? Found this in a bag full of watches at an estate sale. Stuff like the 1 popping off at 12 o'clock makes me think it's a fake, though the finish on the dial is pretty good as far as fakes go if it is. It does appear to beat at 28800 bph and it hacks. This is just not true.
Anything that is Made in the USA is expensive, or at least more expensive than third world production, and generally considered of high quality. That is why anything the gets made here is prominently labeled as such. Boots, shoes, socks, jeans, trousers, bags, suit - almost anything you can think of is made in the US and caters to a wealthy population that cares about quality and appearance. Do you think people who shell out $300+ for a pair of Rancourt loafers aren't going to care about the watch on their wrist?

The US had a flourishing watch industry until WW2 when the companies were mandated to produce components for the war effort. Bomb timers, navigation instruments, all kinds of things. During that gap in civilian production the neutral Swiss companies seized the opportunity and created the myth of the Swiss watch in the American consumer mindset. By the time the American companies retooled for domestic watches in the late 40s, it was too late. Honestly, the Swiss are snakes and the US gov should have imposed tariffs to prevent their takeover.

Waltham, Gruen, Bulova, Hamilton, Elgin, were some of the huge companies on par with anything in Europe, as >>15475034 pointed out.

Many if not most vintage divers do not have screw down crowns. It was a Rolex exclusive patent for a long time. The first divers from Blancpain, JLC, Omega, Longines, Breitling, Seiko all did not have screw down crowns. Nor did the super compressor or skin diver style of watches, it was kind of a professional-only feature for a long time.

Screw down crowns are nice but not necessary if you have a good crown design with a thick gasket that squeezes against the tube. My 60s Gruen diver is like this. When the seal wears out you just replace the crown, whereas when the threads wear out on a screw down crown you have to replace the case tube too which is a much more involved task.

Non screw down crowns are more prone to leaking though and you have to remember not to spin them when you're in water.

Not an expert by any means but I think the trajectory of Jap automobiles pretty much applies to watchmaking. They had the advantage of being far away from Western patents and imports and could just establish themselves with domestic watches in their exclusive market during the early 20th c. Then post WW2 there was kind of a US-led effort to rebuild their economy which probably involved subsidies and Seiko took off from there. Just like the cars they had a unique style that caught on, as well as good reliability and a willingness to sell quality products for cheaper than the Western brands.

Figured it went something like that. I think their inexpensiveness compared to similar grade western manufacturers garners plenty of dismissal, but there's no denying that brands like Seiko and Orient have a lot to offer across a wide range of budgets and styles. I respect what they have done with regards to consistency and quality in simple budget friendly movements like the 4R36 (NH35) and 6R15. Have had nothing but fantastic experiences with both of those movements. Typically not the smoothest sweeping mechanical movements, but consistently in the +/- 6 seconds/day range and very resilient from my experience of ownership.

Seiko made the 1st quartz watches (1969) that killed 2/3 of the swiss brands (according to some sources anyway) and forced the swiss to hard-pivot into luxury -aka the quartz crisis, and to create Swatch. And of course seiko invented the springdrive...

Casio was a calculator/camera/electric musical instrument maker before they started making cheap digital watches in the 80s. Gshock started concept in 1981 and was released in 1983.

Citizen created the worlds 1st atomic watch(1993) and the worlds 1st analog light powered watch (ecodrive) (1976)

of course being in asia and having a ok access to big china market for several decades before china really opened up was a big advantage. seiko's chinese name is 精工 (literally. "Fine Work" )

even so, many swiss snobs still look down on japanese watches

BAsically the same as what happened with them in the car industry :
When the older established western industrial actors found themselves sticking to the same old design language or less efficient production methods, japanese firms had no problems making more affordable products that exploded in popularity as the markets grew in size.
It happened with cars when the old british names started lagging behind in design and in technology and when the americans got hit by the fuel crisis, making the market ripe for inexpensive japanese car makers to sweep in and become the industry leaders, widening the market by selling to less wealthy parts of the population since they had no image of luxury to maintain.
It happened with watches when quartz became easy enough to mass produce and the swiss established industry was still clinging onto its image of being both luxury and technologically at the top. Japanese quartz opened the market to new demographics thanks to lower prices.
What's interesting though is that the swiss kinda came into their position of dominance in the same way after the postwar luxury crisis, but no one talks about that.

Now that you say it, i wonder if germany had the same fate. But it all makes sense, all countries had the means to produce great watches, but the swiss used the moment to market the idea of the (((premium swiss quality))), while the others were occupied with important things.
People don't call the swiss "mountain jews" without no reason, i guess.
>>15474954
Yeah but when we look at microbrands, they already have broken into this industry and they don't even produce their own stuff. Now imagine US companies would just improve a simple, reliable, easy to service movement a bit and make it inhouse. People would like that, and if you add luxury and refinement, not just blatant marketing BS, you could ask nice prices for these watches.

Then why not buying clocks instead of watches?,watches are meant to be worn, not to sit on a safe, you will pass a watch to the next generation and they will sell it for weed money because that watch has not sentimental value since you do not wore it. Of course his "method acting" is based on his mental problems, else he couldn't play the role so naturally. But i highly doubt that he has any bigger financial problems. Nothing, the swiss shit out is actually really bad. Archie is arguing in terms of normie shit like resale value, reputation, association with other owners of ulysses. For example, the sand people seem to like nardin too, and some don't want to be associated with them, or some stuff like that. Archie knows stuff about watches, but it should be treated as just his oppinion, not as anything close to an advice.

I like some of nardins designs a lot. Hands and bezel look great. If you love the design, go for it, quality will be good. But look for hidden cots, like extra servicing costs for the watch or some super special parts in the movement, etc.

What model are you considering?

Actually this. But there is good stuff they can say to you to influence your behavior, without taking away your original idea.
>>15477637
True, also they discontinue beloved models for no reason. Fuck söyko for all of these tricks.

Oh wow, it is really not my taste, but it looks nice with all the proportions.
Flex in poor countries, like ukraine, saw ads for UL allover the city and on ads on the most expensive, luxury mall of the city. But in other countries it's forgotte by most. Watch is classy, nobody will see it as out of place and bother to check the brand name.
Get the watch after some more research.

I wish they would remake the sports 100.

I unironically like Tudor's designs more than Rolex's.
I'd get a BB58 over a Subby even if the BB costed more

Uncle Seiko waffle straps arrived today. They were a lot stiffer than the seiko silicone strap the watch came with but it looks sleek and feels great around the wrist despite it being far less malleable. Also great that the profits are used for good!

Thoughts on case swapped bearded neptune? Personally I would put it in either a 120 or 020 case.

there are 2 arms like on most (all?) mechanicals
you are supposed to nudge it only a fraction either direction, it makes a big difference
1 arm is the regulation
the other arm you are not supposed to touch, it controls the amplitude or whatever (cant remember now)

I like these new cartiers. The two tone looks good. But a bit too big. Well they have smaller versions to. This color is not for me but looks great in natural light.
