How much do you guys spend in your pen? I just got a job where my clients and I have to sign a lot of stuff. Is 1k enough to get a decent pen? What pens are you guys liking?

Parker Jotter, the all steel version. I havel like 2 or 3 in my bag. ~10$
An upgrade (but kind of geeky) would be the fisher space pen (bullet version for me) ~40$
i really don't see the value of a more expensive ballpoint pen, and buying a 1600$ montblanc meisterstück is only kind of worth it and only if you really like writing with fountain pens.

tl,dr, nobody gives a fuck about your pen as long as its not dirty/broken

OP as with all fashion I think it's important to consider the purpose of the fashion statement.

I would only spend an inordinate amount of money (ie a Mont Blanc) if you are running an ultra luxury white glove type of business (ie: Ivy League law firm). I know physicians who use Lamy pens for their personal writings (signing prescriptions) but don't lend them out to people.

A really great middle ground, if you aren't in a white glove industry, is to have "promotional pens". I've seen independent surgical centers give these to surgeons, lawyers give them to clients, etc. This is a super great middle ground option, and everybody loves getting pens.

You can even have G2s custom made, and everybody knows these are the best do-it-all pens.

I have this. It's really nice. Nice grip. Nice weight. That being said there's definitively some cheaper pens I've used that I've wished wouldn't run out so I stopped using them. I'll post a pic of one if I find it. G2s are widely used/prefered when you actually NEED a functional pen to use. Ask any business person when you hit the office aisle they'll say the g2s.

I learned to turn a lathe as a younger man, and I recommend all young professional men do the same. You can buy a block of Cocobolo or Wenge for a darker finish, but I recommend Bethlehem Olivewood, it’s light in color and in weight, with beautiful grain patterns. Then just find a pen kit that matches your preferences and the wood, and you will have better pens than 99.9% of everyone in your field.

Platinum preppy transparent body w/black ink, Pilot Petit 1 Blue body w/blue ink. I'm an industrial designer so those are a joy to sketch with. People mire them whenever they see me doing a quick sketch or signing invoices/papers. Plastic bodies means I wont stain them (I like to get very personal with production, so often my hands have grease, oils or solvents), scratches don't matter and if lost/stolen/broken they are cheap enough that I'd just buy a replacement. Gonna get an italic nib for annotations, green ink prolly.

Ally pens in high school were Parker jotters. I used them because

1: they were unique so Hector and his bad hombres couldn't steal them like they stole my G2s right off my desk

2: my dad used to get them as awards for engineering certs or feats from Sony. And never used them so had piles of them. All labeled with shit like CES presenter 2003 or someshit. I didn't play video games much so I didn't know what any of it meant.

3: they didn't melt if I accidentally left them on the table metal shop

Most are, however. Especially when you're dropping hundreds -- those ballpoints are a meme, yes.

I have a "nice" ballpoint pen. It's from "right in the rain" and it's my field pen that I use as a tool to accomplish tasks. It has a pressurized cartridge that can write upside down, under water, in zero gravity, and in pretty much any shitty environment you can think of. I love it. My field journals are also by the same company because the paper can also be used in any condition, you can drop it in the mud and wash the paper clean -- and it feels like regular paper.

What is it about pens that make them so anatomically discriminate?
I could hold a xy priced masterpiece, but if it doesnt sit well in my hand, I would just do jagged scribbles of a 7y/o.
The balance point, the tip, the ergonomy and thickness of the grip, all of those, finding a perfect match?
Ive had pens that would shine in the right hands, but I just did cat scratches.

And what the fuck is up with regular single use pens nowadays going for €2+

Unrelated, but can you re-learn how to write nicely after 30y/o+? My shit is all over the place and makes me somewhat feel embarrassed. I cant hold lines, and all of my letters are different. I even have hundreds of variations of my signature.

Do you use the standard tripod grip? If not, switch to that and practice just writing the alphabet. Maybe get a pen that forces that hand position like a Lamy Safari.

Either way it can probably be done, you'll just have to start by writing slower.

>can you re-learn how to write nicely after 30y/o+?
Yes
>slow down
>concentrate on what you're writing one letter at a time
>don't bother practicing penmanship when you need to write quickly, e.g. taking notes during a meeting, in class, putting fleeting thoughts to paper etc.
>take up Western calligraphy. 20 minutes a day, various scripts and styles. If you don't know what to write flip open to a random verse in the Bible which everyone has and was used for this very purpose for thousands of years
>slow down
>do not be too hard on yourself for mistakes, rushed letters, sloppiness, poor form. Relearning to write takes time and effort and will not happen overnight. Make it enjoyable.
>write things you enjoy writing. Words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, idioms, fables, words of wisdom. A daily journal is great for good writing habits
>when you practice do so with a clear head and focus on the task at hand
>the key is repetition and steady, intentional writing and practice. Over time you will naturally begin to write neater without thinking about it as much. There will be slip ups and relapses but that is all part of relearning
>slow down
I find the number one culprit in my own poor handwriting is rushing and speed. Relaxing, slowing and maintaining a steady pace and rhythm works wonders. After a while you start to do it unconsciously.
As an aside Pilot Parallel Pens are great for calligraphy. Fairly cheap and common as well. Wouldn't use them on a daily basis for everyday writing but for old scripts and a substitute for fountain pens they work well.

The erasers are replaceable. On the topic of "cringe", I think one of the most "cringe" things I've seen is how I live rent-free in /fa/'s heads regarding how I spend my discretionary income.

I think you're projecting the notion that I'm trying to "impress" people because you assume the only reason to buy luxury goods is to show off. In other words, you only think I'm trying to "flex" on you because you're already aware of your own inferiority to me. True nobility isn't being better than other people, it's being better than your former self. Stop worrying about me, it distracts from you.
