It wears better in person, its thin, i think its doable but could go any bigger lug to lug. The laco is the same lug to lug, now it is a big watch at 42mm but I love the movement and design. Ah the life of a wristlet.

You can make them as thin as regular ones so people can fit aftermarket bands. But a lot of luxury watches have proprietary bands so you can't fit aftermarket ones easily. So that would be an opportunity to milk customers even more.

Were only here on /fa/ because the bead nation attacked. Before we were on /g/. I'm not autistic about it and do not care, like some. The tech discussions about watches on /g/ were not that groundbreaking, and often just boring shit and the watch was just plain ugly, with lack of proportion and beaty on the dial and case.

But nevertheless, i wanted to mention the bead war and how we do not see ourselves as fa. But more as /wt/. Thank you for attending my TED talk.

I prefer the single-pass nylon strap, it doesn't make the watch sit as high as a nato strap.

No you see the problem is with going 2 tone on your accessories, it just looks bad to mix and match silver and gold accessories, they should all be either one or the other. The over-under method or whatever it's called still makes the band bulky at one point. Tried it, it just made a coushin underneatch my wrist and pissed me off. It kept getting caught on the edge of the table.

The short piece on the nato, that prevents a watch from sliding up and down, that thing is a bit useless, imo.
Even with a wet nato i never had the problem of the watch sliding up and down. I don't know in what scenario that actually happens. Maybe only for soldiers in very hard conditions.

I can only really agree with you, it's strange but I guess professional photos can give a false impression of a watch, it should be remembered that the early Explorer was a tool watch that wasn't particularly expensive, it's not probably going to blow anyone away in the flesh. I've seen photos of things like a SARB033 that have looked amazing but I know full well they're nothing special.

So, you’re buying these parts, which are valuable, to assemble a watch that is arguably less valuable than the sum of its parts. Keep in mind, rolexes also have a stupid amount of arbitrage. The reason you don’t see people selling their watches for below market rate is because if they did someone would instantly buy it to resell. Parts are similar; if you received all the parts of a watch and could assemble it at a profit it would already be done.

tldr - go for it, but the watch will likely be less valuable than its parts.

The bracelet is a big part of why I have any interest in a watch to begin with. There's loads of watches that I'd be thinking of buying if they came with a decent bracelet, I know the Seamaster bracelet is highly regarded but the 9 part links just look odd to me and the fake rivets on the BB58 are also a bit of a turn off, I get why they're there but I'm not really a fan. A simple, well made Oyster bracelet is ideal if it integrates well with the case.
It's nice to have strap options for a watch but for me a bracelet should be the default option (unless it's a dress watch, obviously).

There are many great introductory materials on American pocket watches and watch care by NAWCC chapters and various collector's site written by people more knowledgeable than me, so I won't get into that.
By your description you'll be probably looking for a size 18 or size 16 (you don't want to end up with a small ladies' watch). I'd look into pieces produced in the last quarter of the 19th century, better made, easier to service, parts are mostly still available, higher-end movements will have fancy damaskeening. You can use pocketwatchdatabase.com and other online resources for dating and details by maker's name and movement number. There were many US watch factories in the era, it's possible that you will want to something that was made in your state/area. Many dial and case styles were offered, you might want to get familiar with them to find out what you like. At that budget I'd be looking for a heavy 3-4oz coin silver case, they look and feel good, but rolled gold cases are also high quality. Silver-imitation materials were fashionable (Silveroid, Nickel Silver, etc.) but they are not that pretty. Your preference is a hunter but it's possible that an open face would exhibited on a pocket watch stand on your desk or the mantle would suit your needs better, it's up to you ofc.
You'll be looking for a piece that was recently serviced or at least runs and keeps time relatively well. PWs need servicing at least every 6 years if you want to run them, so you should calculate with its cost ($100-150) if you're buying a piece with an unknown service history. Restoring a dial is not economical at your price point so pick something that you can live with.
Don't overstretch your budget too much because PWs at this price point are not good investments (hard and takes long to sell them, especially when you've already paid a premium buying from a reputable seller).

Ebay is fine as long as the watch is described in detail and is offered by a nawcc member with a decent return policy. You should ask if it's in good running condition and the last known date of service unless it's explicitly stated.

Picked them up or was gifted them over the years. The thought of wearing a multi-thousand dollar watch doesn't appeal to me. Most of those watches keep acceptable time (+/- 5 secs/day), are resilient and I dig their look. I'll drop many thousands of dollars into guns and optics and the likes because I'll get a functional difference in performance stepping up. I know that I'm on /fa/ but watch flexing isn't my thing, not in it for the jewelry aspect. To each their own on that front.
