you can't judge the aesthetic qualities of a room by a photo

Just like for every meal the way it smells is most important for its taste, a room can only be experienced in 3 dimensions, over the course of weeks, and depending on the person.

I've managed to get a deal on a one bedroom place in a very small town. Thank god for nepotism? It's one storey, living room and kitchen in the same area. No furnishings whatsoever, not even a floor. No pics because it's still under construction.

Not sure what to do with it. I basically won't have a social life in that town (no change there, but specifically I won't be dating in that town,) and the place doesn't have enough land for me to do anything rustic, so it'll be more of a bolthole/storage unit than anything. It's never going to be a place where I settle down permanently, and I'm likely to leave it empty for a few months a year.

How would you decorate a place you're likely to have for a very long time, but which is pretty much never going to be seen by anyone else? i.e. if you had a similar opportunity.

I'm thinking tiles everywhere (dark gray in living areas, white in the bathroom,) metal shelves in the kitchen, maybe a steel or zinc countertop if I can arrange it. It's a humble building and I want really straightforward furnishings that reflect that. I'd prefer to keep anything fancy as portable as possible, so I'd rather spend money on nice rugs than on a hardwood floor.

So, the secret to a place looking nice is natural light, and sensible materials. E.g., wood floors, natural light, and basic painted walls is 90% of the battle.

The dilemma for your place is that you're essentially decorating a place with the minimum amount of money since you really should just put "whatever" in there.

has anyone ever had their couches in this configuration? i can't imagine living in this and having a conversation, i don't think it seems conducive to social interaction. i've oftentimes lived in housing where people preferred to stay inside and i'm curuious about any of y'alls experiences where the living area was social and vibrant
also been looking at modular shelving recently and 100% think i'm going to have one, with a combination desk, in my room. i have been doing 3d renders of my upcoming apartment if anyone wants to see.

The couch configuration is pretty good, people tend to naturally spread themselves out so that conversation works. Of course, it doesn't work if everyone is crammed on the L.
