First find out what you like and collect pictures of designs you may want to incorporate.
Having the same flooring throughout the place makes it connect better.

As a general tip for room flow; while standing in one room, look out into the other room and have something in there that matches the room you're currently in. ie While standing in your bedroom, look out into your living room and have matching blue scatter cushions.

Always stick to the Rule of Three. Three colors, three shapes, three sizes.

White is timeless. I've been having white walls ever since my 2nd or 3rd apartment and have never looked back. You can find images of apartments all throughout history with white walls. If anything, its the one thing that doesnt change. In the 80s a white walled apartment wouldnt look out of place while one with an outdated colour from the 60s or 70s would.
