I'm moving into an apartment with friends, it's not my ideal place but its cheap. It's an american suburban apartment and I really have no idea how to make these places look good, I planned on continuing my minimal look, keeping things low to the ground, but this would probably look awful

what is your problem with them? that they're more convenient? that you can change the text size to whatever you want? that they're backlit? that you can read them at night? that they can store thousands of books at once? that all their bookmarks and highlights sync across devices? that you can read books on e-ink and your phone/tablet/computer?

not him but you can go to a library. second hand bookstores are also great, you can find older and more diverse releases and personally i like weathered books more than brand new books. the pages don't feel so crisp, you can bend and splay them all you like, and it just feels comfier. so much more of what i love about physical books is in there. not to mention that it's better for the environment too

>> No.15381993

>>15381927
I'm not a fan of libraries because I like to own my books, read them without pressure, revisit them a few years later, take notes, etc. And I tend to want to get specific books rather than just stumbling into a secondhand store and hunting for something interesting. Maybe I need to visit more secondhand or smaller bookstores with curated selections, but that feels a bit like a crapshoot. Chain bookstores (or Amazon) are easier if you know exactly what you want, but new books are like $25-35 cad each...
I agree with you about the cachet of used books, the history they carry, their yellowed pages, their smell. I think it's nice to imprint that into a new book myself as I live with it for a few weeks. It becomes tied to the memories around when I was reading it, gives it a bit of sentimental value. I guess that's worth paying for.

I love the contrast here. In the top pick, you have a white room that somehow manages to look dark and dingy; even when brightness corrected all the dark furniture prevents the room from ever being too bright. Then below it you have this pastel nonsense. For something from the 80's, it would easily be at home in a 90's Martha Steward episode with its bright arrangement and wicker bases.

That said, you spend more time in bed than any other piece of furniture, so it's worth investing there. Fortunately, internet foam mattresses are not a meme and the quality price point is much lower than inner spring. Keep it on a basic platform ,but tart it up with heirloom blankets.

will be moving into an apartment soon, aside from the living room there's one smaller and one bigger room. not sure which of those i should use as the bedroom and which as a room for reading/pc/making music. i think sleeping in the smaller room would be cozy but i'm not sure how much room there is, i only need a single bed right now but if i do eventually bring girls home a bigger bed would be nice. but also the thought of a small room decked with books/pc/synths sounds cool aswell, leaving the spacious room for sleeping.

Exceptionally important for the infrastructure of the house and roof support. Keep things balanced.

>None of that is final
It affects your overall layout and should be in consideration when planning your layout and house structure in a broader sense.

>Measured and tested more than enough for me
Its never going to be enough. Hence why people always want an island

>plenty of houses are layed out like this, plenty of country style kitchens are the same way.
Hence why everybody now are breaking down the wall separating the kitchen from the living room in old houses.

>As in the furniture in them? That's not final, hell the guest bedroom might just get turned into a library
Furniture layout and even the different sized bedrooms. Keep things consistent.

>along the left wall? Yeah I think it could use one there too.
Brighter living spaces are better so that spaces dont feel claustrophobic.

>This looks bad from a layout standpoint, but irl looks fine and is not a problem, dopesn't really block the way.
If you say so. Whenever somebody has to walk around furniture to get where they are going; its a bad layout

>Bookshelves, need at least 5-6 Ikea Billy sized shelves
At least keep this exclusive to one wall

>an entry way, and I can just close the bathroom door, plenty of apartments are like this and it's better than the bedroom being there.
This is a house and not an apartment and the bedroom idea wouldnt be any better. People need to enter via your living spaces and have your privates spaces separate. Its an awkward layout.

>I mean I plan for this to be my final home, but even so why not? Pretty much every person I've asked likes the idea of the bathroom/washer/dryer room separated from a wet room is nice.
That's besides the point; you think this is going to be your final home, but its a long term investment that you WILL have to eventually sell or get rid of. Plan more for the future now and you will save yourself the hassle later

>> No.15401953

>>15401863
Mate, if you aren't going to take criticism then don't post. Why are you being so defensive?

The problems with your layout are solvable, but not if you have a kneejerk reaction to everything.

Simple things like fixing the entry and bathroom layouts, removing the hallway, changing the kitchen to be open plan, having a more modern living area, etc, would vastly improve the home.

You should probably look up some homes that you like the look of, and look into their layout. There are honestly so many problems with your design right now.

>> No.15401976

>>15401904
>Exceptionally important for the infrastructure of the house and roof support..
The wall with the desk could be formed into a "T" shape to be load bearing, but talking to the guys building modular homes a home with such dimensions is very flexible as to where the loading beating wall are placed.

>It affects your overall layout and should be in consideration
Is this better? The guest bedroom has just a dresser and desk with chair, while the master bedroom has a wardrobe, side table, and a few bookshelves.

>Its never going to be enough.
I really don't like cooking and I seriously doubt anyone but me will be using the kitchen.

>everybody now are breaking down the wall separating the kitchen from the living room in old houses.
I know they whole "open spaces" thing is popular now, but I don't like it. I specifically don't like dragging smells and dirt from one room to the next. I find old homes with more walls to be more comfortable too.

>Keep things consistent.
Would it be better to make the mast and guest the same size? I always though the master had to have a larger square footage then the guest?
I don't plan on really using the bedroom and will likely just end up sleeping on the couch.

>Brighter living spaces are better so that spaces.
I mean shades will mostly be closed to prevent UV rays from hitting my plastic butts, I think having a window along that wall is important though.

>somebody has to walk around furniture to get where they are going; its a bad layout
trust me it gives that low income home vibe that I find super comfy.

>At least keep this exclusive to one wall
I don't that will fit along one wall

>People need to enter via your living spaces and have your privates spaces separate. Its an awkward layout.
I despise entering into the living space though it's probably the biggest thing I want to avoid, but don't know how to do it. When I open the door I really don't want the 100kph winds with snow to enter and get all over my stuff.

Eh? I'm just explaining my reasons for things since I know I don't have the average taste/requirements. I think the fact I'm responding in shorter bits is giving off the wrong vibe, I really am considering all the things you guys are saying, and frankly a normal house like you guys are saying would make me happy, it's just I think I could make it perfect for what I want.
I don't mean to be knee jerk, I've just thought about this a lot and have heard the same things over and over, and while not wrong, if I wanted a normal house I would have just picked the default option.

If you took the guest bedroom and shifted it to the right the front door would be moved to the center and that would be an average house, a very common smaller home layout.

Beyond anything else 2 things are important to me a living room with lots of wall space that is protected from the elements, and a Jap style bathroom.

I look at many modern house and I don't understand or like the wide and open stuff. I spend months at a time outside and in tents so when I come home I just want to be surrounded by the things I like.

I really don't understand the floor thing. Like which floor should match and stuff. Are carpeted rooms a bad idea? I feel like a large oriental rug is better
