I'm not a fan of libraries because I like to own my books, read them without pressure, revisit them a few years later, take notes, etc. And I tend to want to get specific books rather than just stumbling into a secondhand store and hunting for something interesting. Maybe I need to visit more secondhand or smaller bookstores with curated selections, but that feels a bit like a crapshoot. Chain bookstores (or Amazon) are easier if you know exactly what you want, but new books are like $25-35 cad each...
I agree with you about the cachet of used books, the history they carry, their yellowed pages, their smell. I think it's nice to imprint that into a new book myself as I live with it for a few weeks. It becomes tied to the memories around when I was reading it, gives it a bit of sentimental value. I guess that's worth paying for.

The cushions on their own are called zabuton, but with a backrest they're called zaisu. gaijin shops will probably call them something stupid like tatami chair.

will be moving into an apartment soon, aside from the living room there's one smaller and one bigger room. not sure which of those i should use as the bedroom and which as a room for reading/pc/making music. i think sleeping in the smaller room would be cozy but i'm not sure how much room there is, i only need a single bed right now but if i do eventually bring girls home a bigger bed would be nice. but also the thought of a small room decked with books/pc/synths sounds cool aswell, leaving the spacious room for sleeping.

The problems with your layout are solvable, but not if you have a kneejerk reaction to everything.

Simple things like fixing the entry and bathroom layouts, removing the hallway, changing the kitchen to be open plan, having a more modern living area, etc, would vastly improve the home.

You should probably look up some homes that you like the look of, and look into their layout. There are honestly so many problems with your design right now.
