Sup turtlebro, I like the strap but it pinches my excess skin (recently lost 75lb). I'm back and forth on it. It's secure and smells good, but it's not as loud and fashionable as the others. What do you boys think?

Can someone set me straight with servicing costs and requirements.

I was just at the local watchmaker who does a lot of warranty work for the big brands in my city. At the service centre the guy had a good chat to me because he was amazed a young guy was into automatic watches (im 30)

He then proceded to have a good whinge to me that people dont service their watches when they realise the cost and complexity of them. He suggested never to get anything omega (due to parts being hard to source and expensive) tag (because they are just rubbish and expensive to service) and pretty much had similar things to say about every brand. They essentially are running him out of business since the newer models have to be shipped away to get any warranty work done on them.

I really want to get a GS automatic and he told me its just going to need to be serviced quite often due to it being 36000 bps.

Are expensive watches worth it? How much are you guys spending on servicing and how often? Ive had mine for 2 years and have had to get it regulated and a small warranty repair. Id hate to think what the next few years will bring.

>man who makes his living off retards getting their watches serviced wishes people came in more often to spend 200 bucks on a lubrication job instead of forcing him to hunt down parts
What a shocker.

He was amazed because most people under 30 have common sense, so they buy quartz. There are a lot of 70s watches that still look good today, but the majority look like total shit. Current standards of what is "beautiful" will look horribly dated in 50 years, so the idea of owning a watch for life is laughable to begin with. Even more laughable when you factor in that service costs over the lifespan of the watch will easily outstrip the cost of the watch if you buy automatics.

If you must own mechanical shitters, at least service them yourself. I have respect for the guy who spends a few grand on tools so he can fix his watch if anything goes wrong, I have no respect for your average auto owning boomer who owns his watch because of the brand label on it.

>> No.15371119

>>15371095
With modern watches the time before a required service is longer than it used to be due to better materials and more advanced lubrication oils used. Recommended across the industry is now typically every 5 years is the recommended. Recent Rolex models even say only every 10 years is needed. Spread out over that period several hundred bucks doesn't amount to that much. Vintage watches will need to be serviced more often if they are used regularly.

Also some brands are worse than others. The large groups such as Richemont are usually very reasonably priced as they have large service centres to handle all their brands so it's quick and easy to get it serviced. On the other hand a standalone company like AP are known to be really expensive.

Integrated is a complete pain in the ass, and some smaller lug diameters are effectively integrated, like G-shocks, because you can't wear a 16mm strap on them. You're basically forced to buy straps from the manufacturer, which means spending more money on often inferior quality products.

Regular lugs will fit everything nicely. And plenty of watches with regular lugs have specific bracelets designed for them that fill in the gap, it just means you can also put it on a fabric or leather strap easily.

You are <50? Just don't wear this Seiko nonsense. Like 80% of this thread just gets inspired by father stuff. Equivalent of fedora. You are young, wear young designer watches. No, you are not a military pilot, no, you are not 50yo cool farher. You only turnyourself into average tryhard dude. And btw, quartz is really not an issue. This san martin quartz shitter is $99. It has a half decent Ronda movement in it, 200m water resistance. The case is significantly nicer with much better finishing, the lume is higher quality. The 39mm case has much better proportions.
So you are paying the same price fore two very different watches, the MVMT is a watch with $15 of manufacturing cost and the rest is profit, the San Martin is a watch where at least 50% of the price is manufacturing cost and you are getting a lot nore watch for your money.

Disassembly (most tools can be cheap, but I suggest at least getting proper ones for removing the gands, a good movement holder and proper screwdrivers to avoid damaging the sensitive stuff), cleaning (you don't need an ultrasonic cleaner and fancy fluids if you don't do 100s of watches, something like mineral spirits or isopropanol and a brush is enough), oiling (again I suggest getting some good special tools and proper oils, and do a lot of reading first). With vintage watches, you often need to find spare parts online. And yeah, it really is something you have to be into, and not worth it if you just wanna do 1 or 2 watches. Totally out of fashion. Now they are finally getting back into the biz with more contemporary looks. Museum Watch, designed by the American designer Nathan George Horwitt in 1947. Influenced by Bauhaus, the watch dial has a very simple design defined by a solitary dot at 12, symbolizing the sun at high noon. It was first made by an American importer of Swiss watches called "Vacheron & Constantin-LeCoultre Watches Inc." (not the Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin), and later produced by Movado. Horwitt's dial was selected for the permanent design collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1960, the first watch dial awarded this distinction. Movado finally settled with Horwitt in 1975 with a payment of $29,000 ($128,000 in 2015 dollars). Following Horwitt's death, Movado started heavy promotion of Horwitt and the design of the Museum Watch. Photographer Edward Steichen called Horwitt's design "the only truly original and beautiful one for such an object". The single dot dial now appears in many of Movado's timepieces. (Wikipedia)

Basically all of ther watches or clocks always start to slow down over time or just run bad. Mechanical doesn't equal "good". If you have shitty springs made of shitty metal and the whole movement is just poor shit with acrylics, you have shitty watch. This still goes till today.
