Tough one there, both have advantages:
1) Go with the black Lefty; less common, excellent legibility, easy to pair with fashion, and full bracelet.
2) Go with the blue normy: fun colour, definitey unusual compared with other watches on the market.

Which one are you leaning towards?

The box is cool; how do you secure the pocket watch? Also, there are guys in the US who specifically manufacture new crystals (glass or plastic) if you need one, but you have to send the watch to them (so they can properly size it according to the height of the hands and shit.).

I keep mine anywhere they're safe desu, but ones I don't wear go back in their original box for a bit.

still figuring things out but for now the pocket watch and franken amphibia with no strap get tucked in between the end of the box and the last piece of foam.

As for the pocket watch not only is the crystal cracked but it is also missing a bow and has a bent balance rod. My local watchmaker gave me an estimate of $700 for parts and labour so it will probably remain a broken keepsake. My great grandfather bought it upon returning to Canada from the first world war.

I was gonna ask (re: pocketwatch damage). Sorry to hear it's not working Anon. I would suggest getting it done sooner rather than later though.

I had to get new hands for mine, but luckily the movement was fine. My watchmaker did have to restore one of the wheels (it was bent out of shape a bit), but other than that it's running within RR specs. Pocket watches are awesome; the technology is comparable to modern watches for the most part, but they're far more affordable for a higher aesthetic appeal.

The other option you have is to get another case for it. I have an alternate which is not accurate but it doesn't matter. Just make sure the size is correct before pulling the trigger, and keep in mind that you have to take into account the interior height of the crystal in the new case, because if the hands rub against it they'll move poorly and you'll 'lose' time even if the movement is solid.

The 'side-winder' config was one that could have been the case with this movement, though it definitely is not the original case it came in. Vanguards usually had the crown at 12, which means that this config is reasonable rare; likely bought by a 'gentleman' who wanted an excellent utilitarian watch. It's far more likely that the movement started out in a gold full hunter case (but the one in my pics is not the original either...I have no idea what the original was).

I can understand wanting to keep it as original as possible, but to be honest, if the watch can run well, then transplant it into another case until you can get the old one repaired properly. Watches only have a life if we wind them up, you know? Anyway, good luck with the servicing.

I too would also recommend that you avoid the Speedmaster reduced. Unlike standard chronograph movements, this one uses a stacked chronograph module on top of a 2892, and the consensus by occasional posting watchmakers on the internet is that when the watch is serviced, it's more likely than not that an independent will service the 2892 portion and not bother with the chronograph module, which is then restacked afterwards. To find a watchmaker who will service the chrono module is tough, apparently. Omega will charge the same to service one of these or one of their other chronographs, so if you only service with Omega then it doesn't matter.

If you wanted a Speedy that was automatic, go with one that uses the 7750 variants (like the Mark 40); these movements are robust and reliable, and still around the price range and case size that you might be looking at.

If you like the Speedy look though, then save up and get a real one.

I don't know much about the FC, except that it's a 'new' chronograph movement from them. I'm sure it's fine. Have you tried either of them on? (you could go to a boutique for Omega and try on the reduced, as it should still be available, and the FC maybe something comparable).

I enjoyed them for the years I had them; eventually I passed them onto my brother when I moved onto other styles, and he wears them perhaps more than I do.

There are pros and cons, but before that there are just practicalities:
1) The earliest Panerais used standard movements (7750s, Unitas, etc.); the prestige of the movement was not the goal, it was the total look of the watch and the 'wrist presence' that sold it (that and Stallone's wearing of them). If you enjoy Italian history, then that's another reason why the re-emergence of the brand was of interest. Only now are they really pushing for in-house movements and random complications, but before a simple 111 was all you needed.
2) They have a reputation and they're easy to spot on a wrist. They're also big enough that if you're not careful you'll bang them into door knobs by accident.

Pros: I only owned had the 111 and the automatic in Titanium. Both worked well, kept time well, and I've only serviced the 111. No complaints, fun changing out the leather straps for the 111 (incidentally, though Panerai sells their straps, you can get great straps from Hirsch (and Hirsch is rumored to be a supplier for many companies including Omega)). The Titanium was a great everyday watch, and this was the first iteration that had the two-piece construction for each link; the modern version is one-piece that is polished differently. Bottom line: no complaints.

Cons: They are large watches, and as my job eventually moved into wearing suits more often than not, I found that the size simply was a problem in terms of daily wear. That's why now I'm using my Seamaster a lot; it is fucking thin and fits under the sleeve without problems. Either that one or my pocket watch when I'm on tour.

I haven't looked into Panerai for years, and they've made a lot of developments that other Paneristi could talk about. But for me, it was a period in my life that I enjoyed, but I will probably never go back to.

One other thing. The lume is atrociously bright, to the point that overnight you can read the time from across the room. Granted, that was the point, but even so, it was something that I always found hilarious.

What I would suggest to you is first to go to a Panerai boutique and just try some models on. Try different sizes, different shapes, etc., until you find one that works on your wrist the way you want it to.

Then look at reputable (this is important!) dealers online, because the resale value of Panerais is not that great, and you might be able to score a good deal.

Beware however: due to the simplicity of the case design and the use of generic movements, Panerais are easy to forge, and thus there is a surprisingly large market of fake Panerais out there. Consider the prospect of buying a used Panerai as problematic as buying a used Submariner; you want as much documentation or at least a watchmaker to confirm the genuine article before pulling the trigger.

>>15324907
Yes. The Unitas movement under a solid caseback which will never see the light of day. Your point?

I did know about the resale, their new prices are absurd. And if Im getting a 45mm watch, itll be the Fifty Fathoms at that point.

No problem; the 42mm has absolutely helped the popularity of the brand.

Regarding the collared shirts; there was a year or so when I had them tailored so that the left cuff was larger than the right, so it can work.

That being said, I'm not convinced that a Panerai is a great watch to wear with a suit at all; it's a fun watch, something utilitarian in origin and obviously made for easy legibility and water resistance. The same argument could be made for the Seamaster, Submariner, or any other dive watch that has been co-opted by the 90's nouveux riches to create a situation where 'expensive watch can be worn in any setting and look good'. That is in the current fashion situation, especially in corporate areas, and although I personally enjoy seeing a simple time-only gold watch worn with a suit, I know that a dwindling % of people feel the same way.
It also comes down to the company you keep, the practical situations you are in, etc.

Granted, all of that is irrelevant if you're wearing the watch because you love it and don't give a shit what people think. If that's the case, get your left (or right, depending on if you get the Destro) cuff tailored to be wider, and go to town. It's your watch, so enjoy the fuck out of it.

To be honest Anon, delay your watch plans for now, especially if you were thinking in the territory of Journe. The best thing to do in this time is plan your finances carefully, make sure your savings and shit are all where they need to be, and rearrange (i.e. change % of savings) if necessary. There's no telling what the economy will be like in a year from now, but luxury watches will still be here 10 years from now.

As for the Speedy curing depression; it depends on what is causing your depression. For me, watches make me happy because I remember the times I had in life while wearing them. With new watches, this is difficult, of course, and one has to build new memories. Do you really want a Speedy? Have you tried one on? Does it 'sing' to you when it's on your wrist? Some watches are simply magical the first time you put them on, and others aren't. Find out which ones are, then have a good cigar and try to think about why it made you feel that way. Perhaps it's possible to get that feeling without spending money...for now.

>>15325765
Having owned a Rolex GMT II just before the first Panerai, I'd say there are a few things to keep in mind. For some, Omega is only an aspiration for specific models that are historically valuable or simply valuable.
>pic related is the rarest Speedmaster variant ever produced.
But as a brand in general, in some ways you are correct; Rolex is still 'king' in our society. But I can't think of anyone who buys an Omega as a Rolex placeholder: the two have very different aesthetics. Tudor is the Rolex placeholder, but lately they've been moving away from the Rolex design lines so eventually they might not be a placeholder anymore. The only Rolex I ever want is the most recent Day-Date in Yellow Gold. It looks awesome on my wrist, and it's the same price as the grail in my pic.

The reason it's the rarest version is specifically because of the case; this configuration was only made for two years in the production, and there have been numerous reports of Omega fucking up if you send these in for servicing (replacing using wrong size minute hands, etc.).

You can get the more numerous Speedy 4.5 in other cases for around 2500USD, but this variant will cost you approx. 8-10 times as much, depending on the condition. In my view and in others it is the most beautiful combination of complexity in familiarity, and it could be considered the final evolution of the Speedmaster (if not for the Mark40 which came after and used the Valjoux 7551 and is smaller). So, it is choice.

That speedy is interesting, been a big fan of them for a while, had a reduced for a bit, but the bracelet was a bit cheap feeling for what I paid for it, which I regretted, but came to be probably a good idea since I have a pogue which I rate way more, for less than half the price

Is there another one that is a standard production model that was made for fewer years with fewer production numbers that isn't a 'special edition'? It was allegedly a run of 2000 pieces, with 200 on straps. The production years were 1987-88. This is common knowledge in the collector's community. Have I missed something?

There we go! See, was that so hard?

I learned something today: I've never heard of a 'telestop' and had to look it up. It's a rather unremarkable version of the Mark II with the 861, and as far as enthusiasts know, most of them were sent originally to Spain. They have chronograph pusher extensions which are...gigantic. They can be had for around 10k USD.

Do you like them? Or I should say, do you find them attractive?

>alas, no pic of the Telestop. Such is life.

>> No.15327750

>>15327731
To go further; the pusher extensions don't actually activate the pushers directly; you have release cables that screw into the extension...I would guess like SLR camera shutter release cables we used to use before timers were common.

I wonder why Omega made these...and who would buy them....

Ah yes, I didn't look at the table close enough to notice there wasn't a line between those locations. That means this would be possible to mess around with if you were in southern Japan where you would be in range of Shangqiu City. That also probably explains why all the transmitters with overlapping coverage have different frequencies.

>What is your next purchase, or what are you saving up for?
I think this year I will purchase a big boy watch,I have some stocks that will sell and after taxes and paying an academic course with it, I think I will have around 3500eur left.So i was wondering about buying an expensive and useless watch since I already have a nice pretty new bike and can't really buy another new one without feeling like a snob.
So right now my idea hovers around buying a nice looking toolish chronograph, or getting a simpler watch and then save a bit more for a moonwatch. I like watches I would use daily, watches for me are not jewelry or status simbols, so I would like something utilitary.I was thinking about Fortis B42, Sinn 103 or 104 and then saving for the speedy or getting the 104+ some russian chrono combo and leave the speedy for much later.Other option would be getting the Yema superman as a daily watch instead of the sinn, its cheaper and also really nice.

If I get memed enough and have enough money at the moment of the purchase I would end buying the speedy.

they're "sport watches" I guess, based off divers, but they aren't divers. no screw down crown, not even 150m water resistance which is considered the bare minimum for a diver now, and no bezel lume pip. it's part of why it's so lame. it's clearly based on an iconic diver but has no actual diving ability. it's just dumb.
they're a bad value because they upped the price while actually giving you less value aside from the movement upgrade, but the 4R36 is basic as fuck and can be sourced for 30 dollars so there's no excuse. at 150 these watches would be acceptable, at 250-300 they need sapphire, solid end links, a milled clasp, and better QC

I enjoy it greatly, but I want the aficionados here to give their honest opinions. Will people who know their shit generally like it? Or is it somewhat distasteful or cheap (like "poser"-ish) in some way? Also more general things like is it a good size for my wrist in modern fashions, and will this likely be a look that lasts? Things like that. Image is partially for the sake of others, after all.

It's a good watch, anon. A bit formal. If you're wearing hyper-casual outfits it will be a bit out of place. People who know their shit always respect seiko because it at least reflects an interest in watches.
The look is timeless but as I said quite a bit formal. Can't tell the size from this angle, it doesn't look too big though. Maybe on the bigger end but it's fine.

If it's well done and you can live with the thought, go for it. Some people would rather have an original dial, even with damage or patina, but at that price you don't need to give a shit about resell value. Back in the day people actually repaired stuff they wanted to keep using.
However, do note that unless the seller has serviced it in the recent years, more likely than not it will need one, which can cost several times the price of the watch (or if it's running decently, you can take the risk and leave it be, but it might get damaged beyond repair with time if it's running without lubrication).
I eventually just taught myself to do the basic stuff to chase those sweet vintage deals.

Male, the blued hands only really look blue when the light catches it just right, but it's at about the same time you can notice more of the depth of the enamel dial. The light plays with it in a kind of neat, not too flashy way in person that's hard to catch on camera

>4R36 is basic as fuck
Yeah, I'm a diehard Seiko guy, but I'm tired of people hyping the 4R36 as a huge improvement in quality because it has hacking and handwinding. It just has a few more parts than 7S26, the QC and accuracy are exactly the same.

Yeah, not having those few extra parts is partly cost-cutting when you make movements by the millions, even if assembled by robots, but I don't really see them as essential qualities in the basic movements either. Seiko used to be so proud of their efficient auto wind that they started doing the 4 o'clock recessed crown to show that you don't need to touch it. And what use is setting the time by the second if it'll be off after a few hours with your nowhere-near-chronometer-grade basic movement anyway.

Nice, I mostly got it for when I'm dressing a bit smarter or more formal anyways. Normally I'm an open wrist type of person, but I think watches are a good way for men to express themselves and show a kind of status in a classy way in more formal settings.

>> No.15331461

>>15331440
They probably are lying, but if it's been oiled at all, even by a trained monkey, and is running decently, it might be ok just to leave it be. Some oil is better than no oil, unless it's slathered all over the movement or something.
