>new thread right after my post

I really enjoyed some of the posts on affordable wardrobe but I feel like I could do with more information on thrifting clothing. I got hints at things like cotton's typically being harder to find in good condition than wool garments which is a bit of a pain given how much I like corduroy, but any information is good information.

Some questions I have are what items am I likely to be able to thrift well via eBay in the UK, what things can I look for, and on the topic of tweed is all Harris Tweed created equal or should I take care to avoid the stuff produced for cheaper labels? It's going to be a while before I can buy things anyway so I might as well stock up on information.

A light tweed blazer, if you can find it. Linen is great, as >>15294142 pointed out, but it won't give the same appearance as blazer nor anything equivalent. 5-ish years ago I saw a gorgeous bespoke bamboo fiber blazer that was between tweed and linen in its texture, so there is that.
>>15294895
Nah. You still pick 2 identical pairs of jeans size-wise and they turn out to be different when you wear them. They might even be worse.
>>15295281
They are slightly better, in my opinion, with some highlights such a Eton and the odd Carmina shoe. They are definitely not "3 times the price of MD" good, though.
>What has always given me a good result are Easy Wear 100% Lambswool sweaters, they cost 35€ and the quality is quite decent.
Are they partially stitched or completely knitted? For that price, I can only imagine that they have the stitching on the sides and the armpit, bu that is not inherently bad.
>>15295290

Partially stictched ones are basically panels of knitted wool that the manufacturer cuts and then stitches with a machine. Completely knited ones, like Harley of Scotland's, are knitted in the shape of the sweater itself, not having any visible stitching. It's mostly a sign of quality, but the stitching is a weak link that may get damaged and undo the sweater.

What are some other suit/jacket brands to look out for when thrifting in Europe? I've been lucky and bought two vintage brooks blazers that were being sold in the UK but apart from that I haven't found much that wasn't too short/padded

Look for old british, german and italian brands. Some of them are bankrupt/out of business and are not recognisable they sell for dirt cheap at thrift stores. We're talking 2€ for a merino wool blazer. As for modern brands I've been quite lucky with Boggi and Polo LR mostly. I found a bespoke, neapolitan s120s chalk striped charcoal flannel suit once in my measurements, crazy thing is that you can tell it was commisioned after 2015 because of the styling. Condition was absolutely perfect too, got it for 10€

How about a list in the op of recommended vintage brands for thrifting and for eBay/etsy? I can start:

Made in USA suit/seperates
Corbin
J.Press (careful, a lot of these have quite structured bodies and padded shoulders)
Cricketer
Southwick
Brooks Bros (avoid those made in the 90s When the brand was owned by marks and Spencer)
Paul Stuart
Jos a bank

Europe suits/seperates
Gieves and hawks
Facconable
Brioni
Kiton
Chester Barrie

Any other suggestions?

Hey anon, I do a fair bit of thrifting in the UK too, not much experience with Ebay but I'll share what I know.

From my in-store experiences, charity shops on upscale streets tend to be your best bet for finding very cheap trad stuff. Scope and Loros have consistently had the best quality clothing out of all the shops i frequent, I've gotten lucky and found Brooks Brothers and designer tailoring there.
Shoreditch/Brick Lane has a couple vintage thrift stores that have a good selection of quality vintage suits, as well as the Underground Market, but they're more expensive and need a little haggling for a good deal usually.

Going back to Brick Lane, the underground market tends to have a few vendors who have hyperspecific merchandise. Off the top of my head, I know one or two always sell Harris Tweed jackets, as well as a few others having a lot of old military coats and ~1940s tailoring. If you're polite with them, they're happy to talk about what they know and give you advice on your purchases. Even if you're not willing to spend too much, it's worth a trip just to see everything and interact with the vendors.

I need something for business, Church, and job interviews. It needs to look professional obviously, but not overly formal either.

No, this is abolutely correct. A charcoal suit in worsted wool is the unquestionable best choice for a first suit. And let me stress that you SHOULD get wool, 100% new wool, anything else is going to be shit for a general use suit basically -- synthetics are shit across the board and linen/silk are niche fabrics, not bad by any means, great for what they are, but shit for a first suit.

The real question is where to get it.

Bespoke will be much higher quality and a more heirloom piece, but here in australia what tailoring there is caters to #bosshunting/SEXcore on one hand, and dull boomer-tier on the other.

M2M, eg. spier & mackay, will be made in china and there's something soulless about getting it done over the internet, but I get more control over the details, like having a higher rise or a Neapolitan cut.

On the topic of denim, is there any good cheap selvedge other than uniqlo? I lift so I’m hesitant to get any expensive denim just yet since my measurements fluctuate a lot, I find denim is much less forgiving. An anon in a previous thread recommended Unbranded as best for the price range, but I may just have to go cheaper since I’m not sure. In that case, either Wrangler or Levi’s unless there is a brandless alternative rivalling that?

Also most likely a woman’s jean for the high rise I guess.

What on earth is going on with your shirt collar? Is it supposed to be worn with a tie? It looks like flappy foreskin. Rest of fit is fine. >What on earth is going on with your shirt collar? Is it supposed to be worn with a tie?
Of course it's SUPPOSED to be worn with a tie. It looks like it does because I wore that shirt with a tie yesterday, so it's made the collar roll a bit. I get my shirts made lightly lined and fused, so the collar isn't very sturdy. I couldn't be bothered putting a tie on on or grabbing collar stays, but I quite like the way it looks, it gets the memey collar roll of a button down without the buttons.

>You're lucky you have a short torso. I wish I could wear italian blazers and actually have it cover my bum.
Also I don't have a short torso, I have shirt legs. It's partly why I get my trousers made with such a high waist, to create an illusion of balance. That Kei is just about too long for my tastes, I've actually considered having it shortened a little.

Putting rules aside for a moment and just going from looks, is there any alternative casual collar to a button-down which can be used for daily wear without a tie and with all pants? Is poplin fine for casual?

there are tiny BD collars and there are huge BD collars. If you're going to go for a little cuck collar a la H&M, just don't bother cuz you'll look like a fag unless you're really tiny. It's all a proportions game.
Any collar that's buttoned up is inherently casual, so I don't really see the issue. If you want something really casual, go mandarin.
