i’ve probably forgotten more about fashion than you’ll ever know. if you think the current state of things could be described as anything but the worst it’s been in 10 years you’re probably brain dead. also almost everything decent that does exist right now is probably about to go extinct. we’re in for a long decade of extreme decline. in retrospect it’ll likely be looked at as a lost decade for fashion. the 2010’s was the stumble before the fall. the 2020’s will just be completely marred by geopolitics and fashion will become completely irrelevant. the world is about to go to war with china. the customer that funded fashion for the past decade is about to disappear. independent stores and brands will close across the board. if you thought shit was boring now it’s about to get 10 times worse.

i challenge everyone in this thread who thinks otherwise to provide me with proof that fashion is in a great place and it only goes up from here. people have become obsessed with archival wear and the past because the present has become so impossibly awful. that’s a sure sign of a collapse, when everyone starts thinking exclusively about the good old days. the greatest eras in fashion was when there was an obsession with futurism and looking forward. 80’s / 90’s / 00’s all had this. 10’s was the beginning of a rejection of optimism and a full embrace of extreme cynicism.

There will never be as much tripfag drama as early /fa/. It's actually crazy to think there are people on 4chan who never experienced it pre-/soc/ the attention whoring was simultaneously infuriating and yet so incredibly satisfying and hilarious when people would band together to attack someone. It was like we all mutually bonded over hating the people who had to make a thread about themselves every day. Also what about the Miranda Priestly reveal? Nothing like that will probably ever happen again. The IRC channel was dope as hell too and I actually still keep in touch with 5~ or so people from there. I dunno it felt more like a community back then even if the level of discussion was much weaker.

I dunno I'm probably extremely biased because it was when I was first getting into not just clothes but music, film, art, etc. I actually almost trashed my apartment the other day because I majorly fucked up a sample I was sewing and putting on some music from /fa/ circa 2008 actually calmed me down enough to get my shit together. So it really is a period I look back on with fondness for all it's faults. I even kind of miss the people I hated.

i’ve always wanted to save /fa/ but the problem is convincing other oldschool tripfags to do it with me. everyone i know is spread out across discord servers and private group chats now. any time i bring up trying to make /fa/ great again no one really cares. i still think it’s the best chance for actually good fashion discussion online. at this point i’m convinced 4chan will survive the apocalypse. it’s managed to last in a way that traditional forums and nowhere else has. truly anonymous online discussion has always been best. so /fa/ is just sitting here rotting and not being used. it sucks. there’a no reason for it to be like this and worst of all there’s no real alternative. i like taking amongst people i know but i also like talking with someone truly random that might have an entirely unique take ive never thought of.

i can’t really speak on trends outside fashion. i feel fashion is the only thing i’m really qualified to speak on in regards to what’s going to happen in the next decade. something a lot of people don’t understand is that zoomers are going to cocoon mode. they’re not going to save anyone. they’re going to go to school for 6-8 years and completely avoid all the bleak shit about to happen. boomers are also going to leave like rats from a sinking ship but only at the absolute last possible minute when they’ve squeezed as much as they can and they’ll steal everything that’s not nailed down on the way out. it’s going to be millennials left holding the bag with no customers, no stores, increasing global conflict, and basically everyone not wanting to give a fuck about clothing. it’s going to be an environment where you see very safe and very practical design. basically things have been getting blander and they’re going to get a lot more like that. this is going to be an insanely risk averse decade.

There's are the two dominant cultural forces in fashion right now. Sleezecore vs fast fashion and boy oh boy does it suck

The fact that Sieg has an army of a sycophants sucking his dick is pretty bad news for the board. If you’re any of the people that agreed with his takes I need to inform you that unfortunately you’re a pea brainlet and it’s most likely terminal.

Fast fashion is not going away. If you honestly have ever thought that you need to never share your opinion on clothes ever again. Why the FUCK are you in my thread? At this point the entire world revolves around cheap shit. None of the fast fashion megacorps are in danger of disappearing, although they will be forced to compete with Amazon in the future. This will actually result in an even more insane race to the bottom. We are going to experience the zenith of fast fashion. It will fully merge with algorithms, advanced mechanization, and insane logistical networks to become more omnipotent than ever before.

Designer brands like Gucci are also not even remotely close to going away. You realize Sieg and you dipshits picked the two areas that will survive no matter what right? Those were your picks for what disappears in the future? Pathetic. Gucci et al. survives through an insanely simple technique that they don’t currently employ because they prefer unlimited Chinese people money; but exists nonetheless for when they need it. They cut the supply. They literally make it harder to buy Gucci product and they radically increase the price. If you haven’t understood that scarcity is the vanguard mechanism by which luxury products proliferate:

You
Are
A
Dipshit

You don’t know anything. Your opinions are worthless. Your takes are for fellow pea brainlets to circle jerk over. Leave my thread. Me and Willy Vanderperre will push you into that vat of boiling excrement at this point.

Made in America by the way is never coming back. Go watch the documentary American Factory. Americans no longer have the culture necessary to work factory jobs. Factories that do come back will be almost entirely mechanized.

ones done for and another is getting re-tooled. i want to launch a third but not during the next 2 years. i’m trying to figure out where the world is going and what i can do now to future proof myself in 10 years. i believe that in the future we’re going to see what i would describe as micro factories. current clothing factories the world over are designed around economies of scale. it works for mega brands but it’s never really worked well for anyone else. everything is going to get way harder and these types of factories are going to become a breaking point. it’s already the case that independent brands struggle to meet factory minimums. the most successful indepdent brands in the future will actually mimic the megacorps of the past 30 years. total vertical intergration. stuff like laser cutting, 3D printing, and automated sewing will make it much easier to have a factory with 10 employees that can make almost everything in a line. that’s my long term goal.

regarding school, i never worried about ostracizing myself. i always spoke my mind and asked a million questions. i was into different things style wise on a very surface level 7 years ago but the core of me was the same.

it’s unfortunate but don’t worry about anyone else at school besides yourself. i don’t really keep up with anyone i went to school with. the teachers should actually be your best friends. you get a limited amount of time to pick their brains and learn everything you can from their experiences and successes but also their failures. literally ask them about stuff that didn’t work out for them or they wished they’d done differently. it can be seriously illuminating. most people who go to fashion school are pea brainlets, they’re not interested in big ideas. most people in general are like that. once you’re in the industry it’s a bit better. you don’t get to choose your classmates but you can choose what companies you work for and who you reach out to.

from my experience working within department store structures is mega cucked and you have to play this gay game of competing and climbing the ladder and playing politics and shit also its probably hard to get a job as a real buyer for a department store too so idk about stability, unless ur located in or near fashion week cities i dont think department stores would be flying out junior / assistant buyers or even have the need for that but this all really depends on the situation of the company and location you'd be working for

yeah ssense is decent i guess depending on the buyer you deal with as a young brand they can be very helpful and willing to develop a real relationship with you and help you develop and build your company but at the same time they just carry everything now and i think there could come a point where being available on ssense makes your brand seem more cringe

also from my experience everyone who wanted to "get into buying" were very misinformed about the industry and knew very little to take them anywhere close to a real buying position so not to discourage you but for me its always felt like a red flag kind of like when your average npc goes to his local fashion school and says i wanna be a merchandiser or a """marketer""" like its very vague and they dont know what that area of work entails in the real world

i think thats a huge problem that becomes super evident once you actually gain some experience in the industry and see first hand how everything works and how all the gears turn, is that you think why the fuck is nobody teaching any of this in schools? like the industry is basically an entirely different world from schools and it sets up so many people for failure like maybe 5 years ago i used to see grads from top schools like csm and think they were the pinnacle of the ideal fashion design career trajectory but now i see that its actually the opposite, theyre mega cucked and doomed for failure without knowledge of logistics and business that makes the industry work

I will tell you right now SSENSE is an awful company to work for. It’s legit the Amazon of designer fashion.

Anecdote 1) Friend who works in their graphic design department in Montreal. He goes and works in basically a cubicle. Can’t really talk to anyone outside his department. Doesn’t really get any of the cool perks of working at a fashion company like that. It’s just an office job for him like anything else. He wants to gtfo as soon as he can so he can go work for a smaller agency or company where there’s an actual fun culture of goofing off a bit and hanging out and enjoying work because you have to do it for 8 hours each day regardless.

Annecdote 2) Was visiting the Bless store in Berlin and started talking to the girl working there. She had worked as a buyer at SSENSE for 3 years prior. She quit because it was mind numbingly boring. She said there were like two brands where she actually got to enjoy the buying process and the rest was a complete slog. Worse yet said position which I assumed would qualify her to be a buyer basically anywhere else resulted in nothing. One of the only jobs she could get out of it afterwards was as an assistant in a Paris showroom I won’t name. Essentially she only worked during fashion week twice a year and had to pay her own flights from Montreal to Paris. She got the Bless job in Berlin to have something else to do in between. The store doubles as an apartment for the person working in it, but again she wasn’t really being paid it was more so resume fodder and because she really likes the brand and got a free place in Berlin.

I don’t know her own circumstances and if she sucks at networking or is bad at interviews or what but it didn’t seem like it. She seemed like a capable person that had unfortunately made the assumption an SSENSE job would lead to other opertunites. I don’t think it does. I think corporate jobs lead to more corporate jobs.

i went to school for fashion design at a shitty school for a year and dropped out and started my own project and just went my own way into the industry by way of meeting people and the opportunities that came with it which led to a stint at a young designer brand accompanying in all of its operations for 2 seasons in paris and the production and development for the season in between
right now im working for an independent retailer and saving to move so i can work for that brand again and gain alot of experience in production which is a huge skillset to have and eventually start making my own stuff

so i went my own way and made it out fine with a really good advantage for me to learn and do my own thing eventually but idk what to really tell people who are in your position i guess who dont have enough experience and developed opinions yet to ask any engaging questions

if that makes sense

so its confusing to me when people say i want to get into buying for a store when they dont actually know what that is, so i would suggest you go work for a good store first and learn everything you can there and develop perspective on who consumes what and why at what price for which reasons etc and gain a sense for what brands offer in consecutive seasons or what actually makes it into stores and what people like etc just everything which will actually give u an opinion that u need to be a buyer who (hopefully) can stay ahead of the curve and do a good job of navigating the flow and change of trends and design

one of the only stores i know of that seriously goes to bat for the brands they carry is Darklands. had a friend who met with their buyer and was getting grilled on their current manufacturing and production schedules, asking extremely hard hitting questions no other buyer touches. but it’s because they want to intimately know the internals of a brand before they pick it up. they pointed out certain details that wouldn’t translate well to production and would probably have to be changed. not because they wanted an exclusive or thought they knew better than the designer. but because they actually wanted to alleviate oncoming headaches for the brand and make sure all the deliveries would arrive on time so they’d both succeed. there’s probably less than 10 stores in the world like that. it’s an extremely old school way of thinking but also can only develop from someone insanely shrewd that’s been in the business for literal decades. the Darklands dude has a legendary reputation as an asshole but from what i’ve heard when it comes to how he treats the brands he carries you couldn’t possibly have someone better in your corner who will give you legit and frank advice that you probably need to hear.

Sieg meanwhile is a disgusting decrepit barnacle attached to the hull of the ship. We can disembark, close the tab and go back to our dynamic and engaging lives full of intrigue and wonder. Third of all: It’s your only defence when told you know nothing about fashion and need to get the fuck off the fashion board.

>But I went to college bro AND I graduated

hahahahaha. I think from a pathological perspective it’s pretty telling that Sieg has a weird sadism against working class people in the service industry. Combine that with the fact that he constantly mentions that he went to college and graduated and Im certain he himself works a service job not related to his degree and it’s the ultimate cope.

Regardless none of this has anything to do with the fact that you know nothing about fashion, all your takes are wrong and retarded, and you contribute nothing to this board. I’m pretty sure your only supporters in here are sock puppets considering no one else has come to defend you. Fucking keel over and die already you decrepit old retarded fuck.

How many personalities do you play here?

>> No.15282392

The problem with "art appreciation only" types is that if you don't have the exact same interpretation than them, then "you don't know shit"

And their interpretation of life is through the lens of unemployed or no skill required job, college dropout or never attended, white, 18-25, lower middle class, fly over state trying to escape to la or NY with illusions that a career in fashion is their way out.

A lot of the time, their opinions are usually lifted. From a consensus on a forum or subreddit they found and confirm to, in order to portray an image of a deep knowledge base.

So you get the same problem of why Reddit sucks, but instead of "upvoting" content you agree with. You ban anyone with a different perspective.

And as someone who grew up in southern California and still live here today.....your attitude of I'm better than the Midwest where I'm stuck... won't fly here ... You think you don't have a Midwest fly over mindset....but since you grew up there and escape online to research to gain "the mindset of the coasts"....but you run into more Midwest escapists....with odd ideals ..

You can't fake your way to being knowledgeable, a lot of people will see through that forum advice parroting.
