ARCHIE IS LIQUIDATING HIS PATEK COLLECTION AND QUITTING YOUTUBE EDITION

This is not a drill. The single most important watch enthusiast has announced that he wants nothing to do with the hobby anymore.

>What happened?
Archie got into an argument on livestream with a privileged Arab trust fund kid named Zain (who is also a Patek enthusiast) after Zain (Adil) claimed Archie's Patek 5130 was a shitter version of the Patek 5230. The livestream escalated when the topic of Archie's donations were brought up. Zain said that anyone who donates to Archie is retarded because he's not doing anything useful with the money and also emphatically announces that he's never donated to Archie despite being the son of a billionaire real estate mogul. This throws archie into blinding rage cussing Zain out and dropping MULTIPLE N-WORDS (HARD R!) right before the stream was canceled and deleted out of fear of demonetization.

The past 24 hours have been a whirlwind for poor old Archie, forcing him to consider abandoning his Patek collection because the brand has been infested by the same tasteless hypebeast 'daddy's money'-type bandwagoners that ruined Rolex early last decade. It's unsure whether he'll quit being a watch enthusiast altogether or dip his toes into the world of A Lange & Sohne, but one thing is for certain, he's done with YouTube.

Let's discuss this MONUMENTAL development in the world of watches and what it means for us as spectators.

This is literally some of the dumbest shit I've ever heard and I've been around long enough to remember when Archie used to hang out with some serial killer who owned a Speedmaster, the time he claimed Federico was a pedaphile and more.

I cannot think or comprehend of anything more cucked than buying an expensive watch. Honestly, think about it rationally. You are paying top dollar for a watch with a mechanical movement that ultimately performs worse than a cheap quartz movement for a few bucks. All the hard work you put into your wage cuck job - slaving away for hours on end for your boss. All of it has one simple result: lining the pockets of snake oil salesmen shilling deprecated technology known as mechanical luxury watches.

you are LITERALLY dedicating at least 20 years of your life simply to buy a premium Swiss watch to enjoy. It is the ULTIMATE AND FINAL cuck. Think about it logically.

Most expensive watches are not actually that impressive. Like you have Archie who ruined his life collecting Patek Philippes and apparently Grand Seiko is the reddit meme brand so you can't like it... but then Grand Seiko's finishing is on par with watches that cost ten times the prices and their designs do a good job of trying to mix classic looks with a more aggressive forward-thinking aesthetic.
Meanwhile Patek's best known models are extremely dated meme trash like the Nautilus or the overly simple Calavtrava which doesn't even offer high levels of detailing or anything to justify that price. And once you start getting into other Swiss brands you realize this shit is a massive wank. Like this watch is 25,000 Swiss franc

like all things it depends on whether you buy the right watch and the condition of the economy. if you bought a rolex hulk when they retailed for ~9k when they first introduced them, held, then sold right before corona you could've gotten in the high 16k for it. But that's just modern day rolexes. There's no shortage of vintage watches that fetch much higher yields than what they were originally sold. I don't think theres *as many* sneakers that you could sell at such a premium as there are watches, which objectively makes watches a better investment. Again, if you know what to invest in.

hate to be the bearer of bad news but sneakers are able to be flipped for 4/5/6/7x retail price INSTANTLY so they can get better percentage returns than watches. with watches you have to sit on them, with sneakers you can turn huge profits quickly. thats the appeal of sneakers that yall seem to be blind of. unless youre talking about just pure monetary returns, in which case fair point but kinda lame to compare just pure money returns on two differently priced items. if someone had 50k to spend on sneakers and 50k to spend on watches, sneakers are gonna get higher returns instantly.

no, prices of new yeezys have died. that has to do more with Yeezys/Kanye stuff becoming really common and kind of falling out of fashion.

Nowadays Travis Scott/Off-White Nike/Jordan stuff is all the rage, and those shoes surprisingly appreciate. Here's a chart of the Jordan 4 Travis Scott over time (first peak is the price for early/pre release pairs)

Of course, sneaker prices are way more fickle than watches. Ask somebody who bought into SBs in the 2000s or regular Jordans in the early 2010s or Ultraboosts in 2016-2017 how they feel.

rolexes are not, and never were, these magical watches that had the highest standards of engineering. it's just a tool watch made to above average standards and tolerances. if the watch was actually used regularly, it could probably use a good servicing. if it looks in pretty good condition and not beat to fuck it might just need a little lube. the worst case scenario short of it being nonfunctional can be solved by just taking it to a local watch repair place and having them lube it up a little, which should cost a few hundred and will be fine so long as they are not just throwing the movement in oil and calling it a day.
people seem to forget that these watches were meant to be used which is why you have these elgins that are literally 100 years old and never serviced one and worn by some factory line worker but they still run within 1 minute a day. your rolex is probably fine

34mm is women-sized in today's day and age. Like, Rolex literally sells the 34mm datejust as a women's watch. You are of course free to wear missized watches as some sort of statement or whatever but it's not fashionable by any stretch of the imagination.

I would love for it to look good, I just recently got this super neat 34mm vintage Stowa, and even though it's a plain white dial and super slim bezels it looks like a toy on my wrist. No matter how hard I wish I wouldn't.

to put it into perspective the average precisionist watch uses I think a CR2016 battery. this battery is really big, which is why the precisionists are all large. this battery typically lasts 10 years but precisionists last 2-3, with 3 being optimistic and considering you don't overuse features like the chronograph on models that have it. a solar time-only precisionist model may work but it would need a LOT of access to light. oftentimes solar charging is not being charged by actual, direct sunlight, which is by far the best method, charging literally hundreds of times faster than indoor lighting. so your solar precisionist could end up stopping quite a bit. add onto that, quartz watches are naturally less capable of generating the requisite torque for heavier handsets so the watch would also have to be pretty delicate as far as the hands go, and then that would affect the design of the rest of the watch.... there's a lot of factors at play here

G-shocks use a 1616 battery, which gives them about 8 months worth of battery life in the dark.

Given comparable pure atomic models without solar also cut a 10 year battery life down to 2-3 years, it's likely that even a minimal solar cell around the perimeter would be enough to keep a precisionist powered.

The reason they don't put solar charging on these watches is either because they think it'd spoil the styling, or that they're greedy kikes who enjoy the extra revenue every time some retard sends his watch to them for a battery swap. From a power consumption standpoint, it should work fine.

it's a waste of money, but there's nothing wrong with selecting a beater or sports watch that suits your taste and level of horological autism for daily wear and then a good dress watch if you work in an office.
beyond that, money is being wasted but maybe inheritance and good deals could be acceptable. or you're da lawyer and fucking rich so who cares.
there's nothing wrong with doing research and browsing here or other places as part of the hobby, and if you learn to mod or serious repairs, so much the better.

>The livestream escalated when the topic of Archie's donations were brought up. Zain said that anyone who donates to Archie is retarded because he's not doing anything useful with the money and also emphatically announces that he's never donated to Archie despite being the son of a billionaire real estate mogul.

This is so fucking retarded. What, does the kid want an accounting ledger of how every cent was spent? That’s not how it works.

Countless people online/youtube/ whatever platform ask for donations. I see it like a tip. I see this on Youtube channels all the time. I’m not expecting my money necessarily to “go” toward anything specific. It’s like a street performer or something with a music case for people to throw change into. LOL fucking ridiculous. The kid is so disconnected from reality and the necessity of work that he doesn’t understand that Youtube, for many “content creators” is a luxury in a sense. The content still requires “work” for which they are uncompensated. Even if Archie is just filming himself talking, he’s still putting time and energy into the channel. People who are financially insecure would have to have to choose work or working more over content creation. I see the donations “freeing up” the people’s time in a sense or making their situation less dire which is a positive to them creating content. Holy shit it’s just unbelievable how stupid that is to me. The kid misses the point of a donation entirely because he’s so fucking rich he can’t grasp the concept.

It's not a meme, but it really only applies to steel sports models. Divers, GMTs, and Daytonas all immediately appreciate after initial purchase. Its actually the exact opposite. Every single rich person I know collects some sort of valuable. They use it as a way to diversify their wealth into alternative assets that have values that change independently of their more traditional investments. Things like art, coins, watches, furniture, wine, stamps, books, guns, cars, and the list goes on. The rich don't just hoard this stuff either they are constantly selling, trading, and buying.

Imagine being this upset about a trust fund baby being absolutely correct.

The psychology of donations and parasocial relationships is fascinating, and you're a perfect test case. Archie isn't going to suck your dick if you give him enough money, buddy. It's absolutely disgusting to me that people give money to youtubers who just sit around talking about meaningless shit, especially watch youtubers who usually just have a buddy who works at a jewellers so they can handle all the watches for free and "review" shit.

I can understand donating to people who actually put effort into their videos, but in my mind the value people ascribe to these low budget, low effort productions is pure lunacy. Most of these guys are very well compensated just for shilling garbage like VPNs for 2 minutes in the middle of their videos, which is probably the way most of these content creators should be making money, with merch as a source of side-revenue.

In all my years spent watching youtube, there are maybe a handful of channels putting out well edited content at personal expense, and the vast majority of these are passion projects that they'd be doing anyway, the only difference is that they have to get out a camera to set up shots while they're doing it.

Also interested in this question. Kinda tempted by the low price and iconic style and the fact that it's low profile and small also ain't too bad, but somehow, I'd like to get something "better".
Are there any good ana-digis like the Casioak, but maybe at tad smaller and sleeker? Or is the solid snake watch actually a good toolwatch?

Fitness bands like the mi band seem pretty good for the kind of thing you're only going to wear during exercise, and they're cheap. The F91 is honestly very cheap feeling, it's understandable but it still is.

Ana-digis are trash, and most simple digitals don't really have the right mix of settings for intensity training and rep counts, although I guess if you're just timing cardio it doesn't matter too much. Even so, the small buttons on most Casios are a pain to hit.

It's the HKED "homage" of the Bundeswehr/Luftwaffe Chrono from the 70s(?). Originally they've been made by Heuer, so searching for "Heuer Bundeswehr" gives you some from ~5 to 15k. Apparently, Sinn has some historical connection to refurbishing them or so, so they also got a new issue of their own.
But if you wanna stay <1k, HKED is the way to go. It's the generic Seagull ST19, that's in virtually every modern chrono under 1k nowadays.
