This thread is about the appreciation of fine timepieces such as the Casio f-91w as well as the chemical engineering and silicone engineering that are required to make a fine plastic timepiece.

I've never owned a watch before but I need one for flying. I want a cheap digital watch with 24-hr clock, stopwatch capabilities, backlight, and with an emphasis on simplicity. yes, just get an aftermarket 18mm strap. not a NATO because it's a tight squeeze through the spring bars and the watch slides around too much. also get the one with EL backlight ILLUMINATOR not the normal f91W which has a shit ass tiny light bulb. the EL backlight drains a lot of battery but unles you are using it ten times a day you'll still get 3-5 years out of one battery.

the women's casios. they're all 20 bucks and it's just the typical reliable casio quality but in rose gold or white. the babby g-shocks are actually quite nice and wearable for a man as well but they sadly have the word baby g engraved into them which limits the wearability for many men and also some women

different moods. the samurai feels industrial, aggressive, modern, compact. it's a comfy watch with cool design features like the monster hands, super heavy graduations on the bezel, sharp lugs, and knurled crown that give it this almost blade runner aesthetic. it's very different and people notice it.
the tuna on the other hand is much more classic, the big cushion case is maximum comfy and dates it to the 60s-70s, it's got a clear tool watch aesthetic and unique design choices like the 4 o'clock crown, the shape of the indices, the combination of round indices and sharp hands, the neat bezel. the size gives it a lot of presence but all the rounded aspects make it seem casual and fun.
personally I prefer the tuna, it's so classic and wearable, but before I flipped my samurai it got a couple compliments meanwhile other watches I own, even expensive ones, don't even get noticed.

>> No.15246738

>>15246723
citizen makes some good classic women's watches, clearly for women with small proportions and a lot of warm gold but tasteful and you get their eco-drive movement which is the best solar in the game and makes it a true watch you don't have to fuss about. competitive pricing too, usually can be had for 100-150. most are classic but there are some more playful designs.
and although people don't like them, there's also swatch. yeah yeah >swatch, but the prices are not going to be as bad as michael kors/cacharel shit, typically under 100, and they have a lot of fun, cuter, colorful designs women tend to like, if she is the type who wants a colorful watch to express herself with. they also weigh practically nothing which women like.

But for flying, you NEED a watch made for flying/pilots!
So you HAVE to get a Flieger, or at least a GMT, or something like that busy dialed slide ruler watches or maybe even an air king. But AFAIK there's no digital watch made for flying, so sorry, you can't do that!
Personally, I'm kinda partial to Sinn. They've got classic Fliegers and a reissue of the iconic Luftwaffe Chrono, but if you're up for something more unusual, their 857 UTC TESTAF LH Cargo is great! If she's into bauhaus inspired stuff, you could go for Junghans, or if price is an issue, Junkers. Small, simple dials, choice of Quartz or Mecha movement.
Especially with Junghans, you'd get a respected brand with history and all that. Junkers is a bit iffy (they got nothing to do with the aeroplane manufacturer they bought the name from), but you probably could do worse.

Depends on the watch. Sub 100g titanium? You won't even notice it. Some 250g full steel shitter? Not so much. A buddy of mine has some hideous Breitling that's 160g without the fucking strap, it's like owning an SUV to take the kids to school.

>I've been eyeing the Longines VHP, but spending that much on a quartz doesn't feel right. What would you look at under 1k?
The nice quartz watches, like the Longines VHP, "the citizen" watches from citizen and entry level grand seikos all start at about 2.5 thousand USD. Those are all very nice watches with high quality quartz movements and great finishing that are worth the money. So if you really like one don't feel bad about spending the money on a quartz watch, they are nothing like a $30 casio.
In the more affordable range check out Casio OceAnus watches, the entry level ones have great finishing and atomic timekeeping + solar battery and they start at about $500.
Also look at citizen especially some of the JP only stuff like the Atessa line.
In fact go to an import website like
https://www.sakurawatches.com/
And poke around some. The japs keep all the good watches for their domestic market.

Has anyone bought one of these Timex "Ironman Original 30” watches? From the reviews on the timex website it's apparently the only ironman that doesn't fall apart and break after a week. I know that I'm better off buying a g-shock but I'm kind of nostalgic for the old school ironman and this is externally just like the ones from the late 90s and early 2000s.

Most people already live on completely fucked sleep schedules because wageslave life is hell, so they try and cram as much fun in as they can manage and eat into their 7 hours a day of sleep.

When you take another hour away from them, these people have more heart attacks, get into more car crashes, spend the day accomplishing nothing with garbage productivity, it's just a complete mess.

The only value of summer time is in tourism and big business garbage because it increases the number of "daylight" hours. In reality, these places could just start opening an hour later during summer, but instead we all have to suffer.

If your sleep schedule is completely fucked, fucking it a bit more won't have a big impact. One would think it would have a bigger effect on those that have a strict sleeping schedule.

The way I see it, if you keep winter time the whole year, in the summer dawn would be before 6 am resulting in most people wasting 2 hours of sunlight while sleeping and if you keep summer time the whole year dawn would be at like 9:30 during the winter and everyone would go to work, children walking to school, etc. in deep darkness. This is from the perspective of someone that lives in Spain, in countries further north this would be even more noticeable.

Why are sapphires used in watch movement over diamonds? The sapphires are already synthetic, synthetic diamonds are already produced at a huge scale for industry tools, there they are harder and should therefore theoretically provide even lower friction, at least swapping out the jewels in the escapement would probably slightly lengthen the effective power reserve of the movement. Saw an old patek pocket watch from 1914 or so that had a diamond holding the balance wheel, why did they stop doing this?

Being 'serious' about hobbies is a pretty modern development. It used to be what you did to pass time when you weren't working or raising a family or otherwise being a respectable man. Now we have more leisure time to get 'serious' about a hobby. That being said, I think there is a fine distinction between collecting and just buying shit as a casual enthusiast. Like anon said, a collection require focus. Could be digital casios or red line subs. I'm definitely more of a casual enthusiast myself - I buy a watch once in a while and I like looking and learning about them but not enough to be a true collector reading old catalogs and maintaining contacts to track down an elusive piece. If you want to see the difference between enthusiast and collector then you should watch a few talking watches. It's easy to see the difference between random celebrity enthusiast #7 and true collector like paramico.

Breitling is pretty based as a company and I hope they survive into the next few decades. They are making some good moves to continue to stand on their own and stand apart. Their designs look way better than they did up to a few years ago.

Also their inhouse movement b01 and b09 are pretty impressive and probably the best value in chronographs in the up to $8k range.
