This fit. Is a general rule with a sports coat that is dark in color, is to wear light pants and shirt with it?

I have a handful of used dark colored sports jackets, mainly because they were really high quality and a new equivalent would cost in the region of $600 each.

Meanwhile the light colored sports jackets I come across are cheap polyester shit.

No, it's not. It depends if you want contrast or not, here you have /ourguy/ with dark jacket and dark pants. White pants and navy top is a fantastic contrasting combination.

>Meanwhile the light colored sports jackets I come across are cheap polyester shit
If you search for mediterranean brands (italian, french...), you'll probably find more light colored sports jackets made of 100% wool, linen or cotton.

is it possible/reasonable to fit your own shirts by hand with just a hand sewing kit? tailors are not open locally and im broke anyway with the spicy chinky flu, but i bought some corduroy shirts for all of 60 pence at aldi so i could maybe have a go on those and learn a little without damaging anything expensive.

>> No.15230093

>>15230012
Yes and no. You would really just want to taper them on the sides to give a good body fit. Leaving the chest and arms.

The thing is on a machine, that takes a few seconds to re-stitch while by hand a lot, lot longer and is so tedious.

If you bring a shirt in, you can just sew it once but you'll have excess fabric inside which can maybe be an annoyance. But it makes you can take the shirt back out again if needed.

Really you are supposed to take the shirt in and cut the excess fabric but that means you need to also stitch the cut fabric so it does not all fray.

If this sounds confusing, this channel is pretty awesome for learning:

Well, by your other reply you're English/British. A home machine will cost you around £80 - £100 new, possibly cheaper if you go amazed used/returned but just as good as new.

It's a great investment. 2-3 shirts tailored at a tailors (or rather some women on a sewing machine) is going to £20 or so I assume so the price quickly shoots up. Something you can do in 10 minutes yourself.

Once you learn the basics, you can buy a used jacket that is a size too big for like £5 and tailor it to fit you perfectly.

Even a basic cotton t for £1 you can tailor to your body and it will look better than a £100 one.

So yes, the initial investment might seem a lot (but not really) but it's a life skill. Clothes too big you can sometimes make a little bigger, too big and you make smaller. Trousers too long? No issue. 10 minutes and you're done.

There are some youtube videos in which people buy a jacket for a few pounds and fix it up and it looks amazing.

Most adjustments are super simple, it only gets complex with things like arm length if the item has working cuffs as it comes from the shoulder. if not (as most don't) it's easy. Shit, you can then hand stitch working cuffs if you want on an item making it functional and actually seemingly expensive.

So I'd say it's 100% worth it.

You can pick up a hand machine for like £5 from amazon but it will only do 1 stitch. It will work for what you're looking to do because you'll soon learn that hand stitching is such work (and why in the past fine clothes were worth so much)

objectively yes, forest green and beige. But take into consideration other highly important aspects like your eye color. If you have green eyes, green shirts will cause a distracting effect. Your eyes should never match the color of your clothing. I find that dark blue and blue in general looks 1000X better on me than any green, because you are only drawn to the matching color, it's hard to explain, but it just looks off-putting imo. The human just can't focus on your whole form, it has to focus just back and forth between the eyes and the green shirt.

How many in/cm do you guys leave on the shoulders for comfort, when it comes to sport coats? You’re not going to wear a coat with your exact seam to seam shoulder measurement, that’d be super tight. Yes, blazers and suit jackets should be closer to your original shoulder width to give off that clean look. I’ve seen some who don’t leave much room, it gives them that suit look which is weird for sport coats bc they’re super casual and others who leave too much which looks dorky and oversized. Sorry for the rant.

Thoughts on overcoats? I've been considering getting something similar to nr.1 or 3 from bottom left, but in gray or black, wool. I'm having a hard time finding anyone who sells these, as it's not very common to wear this in Norway.
I think overcoats look great, but will it make me come across as too turboautistic?
Would it be acceptable to wear this with a knitted sweater underneath in more casual situations (during winter)?

all of those look larpy as fuck, which is the one thing you dont want to look when wearing traditional clothing. keep it practical, and dont stray too far from the norm in your area. a classic wool coat can be reasonable in modern times, but put on a waistcoat outside of a formal event and you will rightly be called a twat because theres little real purpose to a waistcoat anymore besides masking a poor fitting shirt.

in terms of proper overcoats, consider looking at the larger coats gloverall and cordings offer and see if any of those are to your tastes.

Yeah but if you want to do some simple work versus hand stitching, they are totally worth it for the tiny price.

>just get a cheap singer on sale.

I would get a cheap Janome sewing machine. Singer while can be good, plays a lot on the name and brand. Janome usually rate much better.

>i take it any decent machine like say a singer will handle denim and corduroy?

Well for simple things that you take slowly, if you are stitching heavy denim then not so. The machine is going to be another step up, requiring the strength to do that and those will never be entry price sewing machines.

Basic machines will pretty much do all that you want, but heavy denim, embroidery and so on requires a different (and more expensive) machine.

Tapering a denim jacket is usually fine though on a basic, like above, just take it slow and careful.

Corduroy is much easier than denim, you only risk messing up like your needle if you go too fast, whilst with the more heavy duty machines they obviously have to go fast because of time and profit in manufacturing.

Yeah I still think the investment is low when you can learn how to make every item of clothing you wear fit you perfectly, so things you like, find comfy etc. but don't have a great fit can now have a great fit.

People pay double the price and more for a "tailored fit" off the rack t-shirt which still will not fit right when you could get a basic t shirt and do it.

I actually don't. Using silk is pretty rare, but I feel like RL purple used to make some. The way the cotton usually used is cut can also make a difference in plushness. I don't remember the process without checking Wikipedia, but the more plush cotton version is probably your best bet. Don't ask me where to get it though because I have no idea who does what definitively. But I can say that I think my polo cords look far better than my JCrew cords and that I want to upgrade my cords as well someday.

Basically look with your eyeballs and see if it looks bad on you. I'm very pale for example, so I look terrible in red or black but great in blue, green, grey, and brown and fine in everything else. Those colors also bring out my eye and hair colors. I just used trial and error over the course of my life, but I'm sure if you Google you may find a guide.

basically If are light-skinned, you can wear black white, and neutrals, darker colours like brown, blue. Colours that are too similar to your skin, like fusia, peach, pink, will clash, and look bad. Really vibrant colours like orange, red, yellow, green look better on black people, whereas brown will look bad obviously.

Bruh, what? That's contrast and not compliment.

The same applies for hair. Like if you have pale skin, black hair clashes too much. That would be contrast which you are advocating for some reason.

Meanwhile if you have pale skin, a light brown color or blond suits your hair best. It's why dark skinned people look best with black hair and a black beard.

So if you have pale skin, a light grey shirt is going to look better than a black one on you. Please stop giving "advice" lol.

The way I've heard it explained is that color depends more on your undertone, which is either cool or warm.
Cool undertones tend to wear blue shades, deep purple, certain green tones, light gray, etc. better.
Meanwhile, warm undertones should generally go more for earth tones (brown shades, burgundy...) and warm colors (yellow, orange).
That isn't supposed to mean that you have to exclude half of all colors from your wardrobe, just that it's something that can potentially help you.

In terms of contrast, supposedly it depends on your natural contrast: if you have light skin and dark hair (or black skin and white/blonde hair), you can be a bit more daring in terms of combining primary or complementary colors, though stay vary their hue or you'll look like a clown.

I'm not an expert on any of this, just some things I have read in various articles, so do your own research.
If you want actual advice, you're probably best off to just start with conservative neutral colors like greys, shades of brown, shades of blue, white, etc. Then add a splash of color to one piece of clothing or different hues of the same color. In terms of which color, maybe something based on your undertone, maybe repeat a naturally occurring color (e.g. your eye color).

Full velvet (as in silk velvet; "cotton velvet" is just velveteen, the material regular corduroy is made of) cords are basically something you're never going to find, the closest you'll possibly get is silk weft and a rayon pile. The same is true even for smoking jackets. People just don't make proper velvet anymore. If you've touched a vintage garment made from silk velvet, you know; the hand feel is noticeably different due to the much thinner threads giving a denser pile.
