Yeah sampling is a way to go. Look up for fragrance facebook groups in your country. That's where the best deals on samples come from and you can get things not available anywhere. After spending couple days there you will be able who is a legit seller. There are many scam groups but from my experience all of those where you have sense of natural grown and organic community are trustworthy. They even monitor each other if the prices are right for the groups and no one is trying to profiteer. Only sometimes someone shady comes along but his singled out pretty quickly. It makes sampling really affordable because you will basically pay the price per ml they get on deals online plus negligible postage and atomizers cost. Imagine hunting the best deals and sales with promo codes and then getting just a 5 or 10ml decant for the price per ml they paid. Also often you try stuff that you wouldn't otherwise because it's very expensive or rare or just released. For example one can get 10ml of the new Interlude Black Iris for $30 in one of the groups I'm in. I would never blind buy a full bottle but that way I can get only 10ml of it for the release price before it's even available in the online shop. You can also swap the samples you got bored with/didn't so they don't just gather dust in your drawer.

Missed a few out though, I still wear Chypre Palatin and DHI quite a lot but it's starting to get too warm for them other than late evenings/nights. Not sure what started it but I think it was someone posting about cheaper fragrances or especially clones meaning poorer quality ingredients in exchange for the lower price.

Few posts in and then Jo from Wafts starts going off on one about how clone houses use shit ingredients and will never be as well made as niche frags like Tauer or 4160 Tuesdays ones. So at this point the owner of Parfums Vintage then gets salty and piles in with several essay-length replies asking him to show everyone where or how he knows what ingredients they actually use before dismissing them?

He then started posting things he uses in Parfums Vintage frags and pretty much btfo'd Jo who at this point couldn't name anything and started trying to dodge the question with a bunch of other people piling in and laughing at him or screeching about him being a niche snob. Eventually he dug himself into too deeper hole and then cucked out and took back everything he'd said a few hours later apologising to everyone involved.

The sample pill was one of the most important things I learned from /frag/. I used to own 30 bottles at some point of which some were getting only maybe 2 wears a year. Now I cut to 6 bottles and two of them will be finished this summer. My bottle of Azemour is on the way though and I’ll for 100% rebuy Chypre Palatin this Fall as I finished my full bottle last week so I don’t discount these two. Regardless of that I have like 40+ great scents at hand at any time at cost of maybe one good niche bottle thanks to samples and can test them thoroughly to see if they are bottle worthy. Feels good overall

It was in the context that he was refusing to give ground and repeatedly trying to slide the argument into another question about clones undermining fragrance as 'art' and other arguments when he was clearly losing the argument and digging a deeper and deeper hole with every reply. He only did a u-turn and apologised when it got to a point so many people were just laughing at him and dismissing him as a clueless niche snob that he finally caved more just to get them off his back with a similarly slidey apology about 'things becoming too emotional tonight' than honourably admitting mistakes have been made and his defeat.

>>15215444

Although I like how wearable the parfum cologne is by comparison as an evening scent in spring and summer I still prefer the thicker, richer smell of the parfum. Engima I prefer the parfum, but danger I don't like the parfum at all but really like the parfum cologne.

Mhhmmmmm yes I miss the 2013-2015 /frag/ so badly. Nothing better than two confused fragrantica/basenotes expats trying desperately to initiate some discussion with a horde of people asking about the best Axe or basic fuckboy scents in threads dying at 30 posts. Then the Dylan Blue/gay shitposting, unironic designer vs. niche flamewars going for 100 posts happening every time and then fuckboys discovering Sauvage in 2015-2016. Such wonderful times. You must be fucking kidding or just long for 'good old times' to say that /frag/ in the current formula is shit. We got plenty of actually knowledgeable regular posters who always help out newbs, very good guides with meme anon now helping to make a new chapter of /frag/ history with the new chart, one of the most active general on this board, our own funny memes and some sense of community that is unique and completely different then basenotes/fragrantica/reddit. All of that with threads full of very varied, interesting frags discussed each thread and apart from occasional spergs most of people but newbs have enough of distance to this hobby to don't start some flamewars over designer vs. niche topics etc.

I've never understood that benchmark. It's nice to have it confirmed that you smell nice but who really cares about a 'compliment factor'? I want my chick and my friends/colleagues to be able to tolerate (and possibly even like) whatever I'm wearing but what do you gain by having some stranger tell you you smell nice? I get it, but I don't get it. I'm leary of watching fragrance reviews in earshot of my gf at the best of times but whenever they get into the whole COMPLIMENT BEAST type discussion I have to put headphones in or change, it's giving her too much fuel to roast me

All 4 of the TdH line, accepted, I'll end up getting one for the warmer office days, probably EDT, although the Intense Vetiver is nice, like a less sharp Montale Red Vetyver.
TF Oud Minerale and Oud Wood. Both okay, interesting but not enough to warrant the price.
CdG2, read the reviews and saw the notes. Not nearly as interesting as I expected, smells like refresher sweets to me.
Prada l'homme Intense, disgustingly sweet. I found the original too sweet, so not sure what I was expecting.
Dior Eau Sauvage Cologne, harsh citrus blast but dries nice and smooth with the vetiver, decent performance, considering this for the summer too.
Prada Luna Rossa Black. I miss Midnight in Paris lads and this doesn't hold a candle.
Still have my sample of TF Noir Anthracite but didn't get halfway through before buying a bottle

I feel like there's a whole new world of indie fragrance creators to discover there but have never dived too deeply there. That's where Anna Zworykina started, now she's available at Bloom among multi-million budget fragrance houses there and her fragrances still stand out with quality and uniqueness. It seems like you can also find lots of niche attar creators there (at least here in UK). Mellifluenceperfume is one and Wafts speak very highly of him. That's also where Rogue started.

>@mellifluence_perfumes is #beyondthehillsii . Conceived as a natural version of the wonderful Zagorsk by Comme Des Garçons, this is a pine and incense lover’s dream! As well as Zagorsk I’m reminded of the wonderful Hinoki by CdeG. The other two fragrances that I love that sprang to mind were Arso by Profumum Roma and Cape Heartache by Imaginary Authors, but this is more complex than the former and far more natural than the latter. A sensational blend of Incense, Pine and Birch that transports your directly to the heart of a forest. The opening is utterly uplifting. It’s an incredible balance of rich and bright. A lovely vetiver note gives this suggestion of the forest floor, and there’s just a little funkiness around the mid which gives some animalic warmth. As if that wasn’t enough, there are a couple of deftly handled ouds that add woody complexity without every stealing the spotlight. Wow. This really is top quality stuff. Can’t wait to explore more! I’d heard great things about this house, but this has surpassed my expectations, given how much it cost me.

So I’m testing Cuir Cuba Intense and this kafkasque blogpost nails it
>Imagine a land in an alternate universe, a parallel Cuba called Cuir Cuba Intense. There, an old tobacco farmer rolls out tobacco leaves, not on the thighs of nubile virgins, but on cedar tables covered with thick, black licorice paste. The leaves are still a bit raw, half-moist, and wet, with a certain dirty darkness that borders on the leathery. The farmer layers the tobacco with generous amounts of sweet coumarin crystals, then more black licorice, before dusting them with geranium rose, bits of lavender and mint, and a touch of lemon. Rolled into cigars, they are lightly doused with civet and musk, then nestled between sheaves of sweet hay, and left to dry in a room filled with golden ambered warmth which carries the faintest traces of rum and honey.
Quality, as always with Nicolai, is there but it turned out again that licorice note is a no from me. That’s why I’ll choose Invasion Barbare over HdP 1725 any time and day despite the fact that I can objectively say that 1725 is very similar and does a great job (but performs worse than IB). I was going to bed already when this thought passed through my mind that some spicy fresh accord would save this Nicolai for me. And then I created magic by spraying the classic YSL L’Homme 2 times on top of the Nicolai spritz. Lads now that’s one good layering combo. Nicolai provides it with depth and complexity while L’Homme brightens it up and makes it more approachable. The spicy facets of both are the common denominator making it work smoothly in tandem. It smells like a niche version of LNDLH. I can imagine Jeremy saying words like seductive, panty dropper and power while smelling it. I should try layering more.

Hi guys, the newfag to frag here, just come back from the shop.
I got to smell Another 13, Orange bitter from Jo Malone, Oolong from Atelier Cologne as well as Floris Elite
Another 13: smell like dirt, no really it just smell like earth worm to me.
Orange Bitter: Just a fresh, clear orange smell, a little bit over the top for my taste, candy like.
Oolong Tea: Really nice, recommend it, a little bit too light though.
Floris Elite: A subtle smell, a little bit like my shaving cream actually with a hint of mint, lemon, not fleshy green but creamy.
End up buying a 10ml bottle of Floris Elite.

Some quick first impressions on the Bogues, just from sniffing the vials.

>MEM: Surprisingly bright, almost tart. I was expecting something soapy like a hefty lavender detergent. Definitely not the case.
>o/e: From the notes I had guessed it would be a formal citrus masculine, but it's much more woody and laid back, kind of a lumberjack vibe.
>Doleur!: What the literal fuck. This is so weird haha. Mix a less synthetic Joop with the blood accord of T Rex. I love weird shit. Can't wait to try it for real.
>Maai: Not that pissy on a first impression, definitely resinous. In fact, the tail end of Doleur! stuck in my nose and mixed with the resinous bits of this to be very reminiscent of T Rex.

All in all I'm pleased. Gardoni is a weird guy.

Going through my Nicolai samples.
Up first: Cap Neroli. Its a fresh, clean white floral. A fancy "fresh out the shower" smell similar to Neroli Portofino, Mugler Cologne, or Original Vetiver. Smells the best of those imo (the last two are a bit sour on me) with decent performance and a better price than TF or Creed. But this style has never been a fave of mine. Definitely worth a sample if that's your jam.

I guess it depends on which Shalimar you go for. And whether its new or vintage. The recent formulations of the extrait for example have a dryness to them that the vintages don't have. I think they had to compromise on the citrus aspect, so theres nothing really to round out the dryness and heavy nature of the base. You see a lot of quotes saying 50 percent of Shalimar's formula is bergamot, and if that is still the case today I really think they have changed what they use. Regardless I would say the extrait is more about the smoky vanilla and leathery nature of Shalimar, and the lighter versions are geared towards a fresher citrus burst mingling with a more powdery vanilla. I can't really speak for the tons of Shalimar flankers though. For what its worth I don't find Shalimar that floral, just whispers here and there. I don't find it extremely powdery, but a few people are sensitive to powdery frags so YMMV.

Sushi Imperiale Bottled is absolutely amazing. It opens with a beautiful citrus blast that soon after makes place for this Christmassy coziness of warm spiciness with some flowery facet to it that this fragrance is known for. The citruses stay there throughout though and on the way to the dry down you start getting woodiness. All of it is blended very smoothly and gives you a three-dimensional feel. his is what I expected Haeckels Pegwell Bay to be like. Thanks god anise and spices here are not pastry/christmas-like and cloying as in Pegwell Bay and the whole thing is really refreshing. However $9 for a sample is ridiculous. are these good ones to sample? ive tried a decent amount of montale's, black aoud was oldman in a retirement home on his deathbed tier, oudmazing was meh at best, honey aoud was godly chocolate greedy was okay during the drydown and santal wood was a generic synthetic woody frag.

I've only tried Full Incense (good stuff) and Wild Pears (my gf used to own it - that's a photo realistic canned pears smell, I think you'll like it given that you seem to be into gourmands). If I were you I'd rather choose Aqua Gold, Sensual Instinct (probably the best Montale's gourmand) and Aoud Leather instead of the other three.

Ah fuck, you already know Sensual Instict. Sorry. That's really good stuff.

I always felt like the chart should be sorted better and I strongly believe a cheap but good represantation of whatever type should be put as first one, like Bright Neroli for Fresh Florals like it is shown here.

That was the assumption. Sometimes it's hard to find a very good cheapie for every category tho. There's no point of including mediocre frags just bc they're are cheap.

Yes of course they would have to be good enough to deserve being shown there.
