This is a highly anecdotal question though, for if I were to consider a never-take-off watch, it would surely be a quartz, just wondering if one could keep a watch going just by wearing it alone.
Ive read, for example, that a Seiko NH25 cannot even be wound through the crown?? WTF, do you have to shake it like a madman just to wake it up? Whoever thought that would be a good endineering idea?

Just be aware that they won't have the water resistance they did when new without an overhaul of the gaskets and lots of watchmakers will not be interested in working on quartz movements, so you might have to find a specialist to get it lubricated and or adjusted.

Trying to buy a new strap for me 39.5mm omega planet ocean. Want a rubber strap but the retarded OEM one is leather/rubber and it looks terrible in my opinion. Any experiences with aftermarket rubber straps, and if so which ones would you guys recommend?

Also fuck 19mm lug spacing it's impossible to buy. How ugly would a 20mm strap look squeezed into a 19mm spacing, if it's even possible? (worried about spring bars being near impossible to remove)

>> No.15195432

>>15195420
bonetto cinturini or whatever makes 30 dollar real natural rubber straps. natural rubber is the good shit, much more durable and doesn't pick up lint like silicone which is what most aftermarket rubber straps are made of. they also don't go for the quickchange springbar meme which just make it easier for your watch to come off.
you could probably just shave a millimeter off with an exacto knife, half on each side, but if your hands aren't steady enough you could just use an 18mm strap.

>> No.15195436

>>15195432
is undersized better than oversized?

also, should I try and get one that fits the original omega clasp (rubber strap w/o buckle) or is that going to be near impossible to match the lug/buckle sizes?

it's all dependent on you. are you going to notice a 1mm gap between your watch and the strap? do you want to try your luck taking a knife to the strap instead to turn 20mm into 19mm? I'm lazy I'd just take an 18mm strap.
also I don't know because I don't own a Planet Ocean but usually those Omega straps taper until they hit the clasp so, for example, it's 20mm lug and then the bracelet tapers to like 18mm and then the clasp is 20 again. if so, you would have to find a strap that tapers and then I don't know how it fits to the clasp. there are actual omega forums that might be able to help with that.

>> No.15195451

>>15195442
From what I've read, squeezing a 20mm strap into a 19mm size without shaving the strap is almost unnoticeable. I wonder if anyone here can confirm/deny this because I highly doubt it's as seamless as people say. I would rather it fit snugly, though.

Unfortunately the forums haven't been the most helpful. The smaller planet ocean's 19mm lug spacing is uncommon apparently, and I haven't found a conclusive guide on aftermarket straps that makes me confident enough to spend any significant amount of money.

>> No.15195461

>>15195451
honestly i'd just try it. get the 20mm strap. either it slots in just fine or you can take the knife to it and carefully just scrape a little off each side until it fits perfectly. worst case scenario you knock a little too much off and you get an 18mm strap anyway.
as for the straps themselves, bonetto is the best combination of price and quality. anything cheaper is using silicon rubber, which is more supple but is a lint magnet until it breaks in and has less toughness. this is bad combined with many of them going for the quick change spring bars because the additional stretchy quality of silicon may cause failure if you're getting knocked around because the quickchange bar is less solid than a regular springbar. there's lots of stories of surfers or snowboarders taking a fall and having the watch fly off the strap because they're using silicon straps with quickchange bars. bonetto NOT using these is a plus.
anything more expensive than these is using the same material, vulcanized rubber, but they're charging more, and in fact some aftermarket strap sellers ie. marathon, just have bonetto manufacture their straps anyway and then they add their own hardware and a big markup. bonetto is the perfect nexus of quality and price. are there better ones? sure but they will cost significantly more money and only be slightly better.

depends on the watch and what you're trying to go for. if the watch itself is black/white an orange band adds a lively and interesting pop of color and you may be able to pull off this look almost anywhere except obviously really serious places. if the watch is blue, orange is one of the chromatic opposites of blue so you get something very striking, summer-y and playful, amazing for the weekend or the beach but hard to justify just anywhere

I’ve been saving up for a one-watch collection (aside from my trusty Casio beater) for some time now and was about to pull the trigger on a Cartier Tank but unfortunately given the current economic scenario I just don’t feel comfortable shelling out that kind of money.
So I’m strongly considering pic related. Looks awfully appealing in the jubilee IMO. It would be worn everyday to work (bush pilot), taken to the pool/beach, camping, etc. I intend to really use this beauty, and hopefully pass it on to the next generation.
What do you guys think?
Also, how déclassé would be to engrave my last name on such an accessible piece? For reasons mentioned above.

I got an old Seiko quartz chronograph from my grandpa's will, it sits in its box with the battery rotting away because it's only a 100 dollar watch and the shitty materials have degraded massively with time. The strap, which was partially gold plated, has mostly worn away. The glass, which was Seiko's dogshit hardlex or something, is covered in scratches with chunks missing because he was a builder and it was woefully equipped to handle that lifestyle.

Frankly, most "heirloom" watches are shit anyway, because most people don't have 50 year old taste. But giving your kids cheap beaters isn't really a gift.

The only sensible "one watch for life" is to work out how much you'd spend on an ideal watch, for you it's 5k. Next, work out how long you're likely to live, so let's say you'll live to 90 because we're optimistic as fuck. Next, divide the 5k down into how many decades you'll live, because any quartz worth owning has at least a 10 year battery life. So, assuming you're in your 20s, that's 700 dollars on watches every 10 years.

Like any “hobby” that requires no talent or development of a skill the pleasure derived from it is inherently and inexorably dependent solely on the ownership of the item per se. Therefore it is not surprising that the monetary value of it ends up being the main appeal of it.
Never in my life have I met an interesting personage who collected expensive time pieces.
Nothing against them, but the “hobby” wears off quickly.

Absolutely right abiut the Rolex, still need to order a proper black leather strap. It came on the oyster that's on the Tudor. The thing about the Rolex is that it's superglossy and gilt, quite unusual. There is some kind of vertical brushing to the laquer as well which is interesting and the movement is like new.

The Clean Ocean sunburst dial is well executed and the plastic pearl caseback is strangely beautiful but I don't like it. Sunburst dials, even well executed ones, are not that unique and the whole plastic caseback and the name are a little too heavy on the environmentalist message. The Lake Baikal's name takes you to a different place, and being rooted in a specific place rather than just the ocean gives the watch some charm. The icy dial and caseback are also very calming. It's almost like the GS Snowflake in a way.
