Someone in the other thread already told you it's a retarded /biz/ decision. It's also a retarded choice if you're after /int/ (although that's a more subjective take). Paying $2600 to rent a cookie-cutter, soulless place as a (I'm assuming) bachelor is beyond ridiculous, even if you're in tech.

You could rent a full house somewhere in ballard/fremont for that, with a backyard. It would be an older house, but it would be way more soulful and /fa/ imo.

But, it;s your money, and you clearly like it

I've looked long enough in my preferred area to know that the options won't get much better in my budget. I decided I don't want to live in Ballard anymore so I stopped looking there. I think I'll be happier if im in walking distance of capitol hill. Walking to work also sounds really nice too. Also of course it's going to look soulless when it's empty im sure plants, some nice prints on the wall, tasteful furniture, lighting and a nice big rug will help. It's got potential.

This this this. If you're rich OP, you have the money to rent a house that was actually designed well and not designed to appeal to every boring white person that has a following on instagram of over 2000. You can literally rent an entire house, in a city, with a yard. If you're a trust fund baby, just get your parents to put the fucking down payment on a house and cosign the mortgage wtf???

You're not asking for /biz/ advice anymore because they gave you good advice. So you came here because you think you know better or don't care. So you ask for advice here for people to give you help choosing something because you have no taste or enough common sense to listen.

Making a place look nice and feel homey is quite a bit more than finding a cookie cutter apartment/townhome, going to room and board, buying plants and a bunch of coffee table books to make it look like you know something about design. The space must reflect the area you are in, who you are, and what you are trying to reflect back on the world with yourself.

But do you see how disposable the world is to you?

My uncle is crazy rich, he has 4 homes and moves around constantly. He lived a block from the Buckingham Palace for a month and then left. He can't stay in one place, his home now could be anybody's who has a large amount of money. There is no sense of self, no personality. When I see that I don't see peace, or happiness, I see someone who is lost in wealth.

Yes, you can live there. Yes you have money so It's not a problem, but why just move there to say you live there? It's inoffensive, and you're rich so youll move on and it's no skin off your back. But what happens when you find a time where moving to a new place, to a new city, to a new country doesn't mean anything anymore, doesn't cause any thrill anymore? Rather than seeing the earth and people as something you can just toss away when you're bored with them; why not find an apartment, a house, or a place where you want to stay and be?

Ask yourself what is valuable in a home? Where do I want to be? I do not understand the point of living somewhere just to move away when you're bored. Maybe it's just a personality trait I don't have.

Otherwise my best bet for you would be find the apartment you're fine living in, and just hire some girl or gay guy off instagram to decorate your place for you so it doesn't come off as a tasteless gaudy mess.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to move or see new places. But how you've presented yourself so far is very uninvolved and uninterested in anything that makes anywhere you live a "home". Post pictures, post inspo for me. You want people to do the work for you? You want a monstera but can't be bothered to look at plant care or look up plants that would work in your place yourself? Also you can't cry for yourself about how hard it is to find a place when you're trying to move it a city as popular as Seattle.

I apologize for projecting.

I mean are you even planning on cooking much? You said you're right out of college and you're a guy so I just assumed you weren't doing much cooking. Also kitchens don't need to look nice to work well lol.

There are tons and tons of plants and being in Seattle you have much more ideal growing conditions than most places. Honestly since you have money the easiest thing for you to do would be go to a plant store or nursery and just ask them there what plants would work for your place. Know which direction your windows face, think about how much you will be able to look after them, and how much of you're free time you're willing to spend taking care of them. Monsteras are easy, they like bright windows, they like to dry out before they get watered again, and they like a pole or something to support them as they grow.

I plan to cook more, I'm not big on eating out. I was actually thinking of going vegetarian and also cutting out all dairy. Plus for that amount of money, a kitchen like that is simply unacceptable. >> No.15142983

imo the propensity of the market to build complexes (apartment or other) for fresh out of college kids with well paying jobs is kind of a disaster-- many of those services get bundled into cost calculations, when it's not necessarily true that you would have picked them if they weren't offered.
The same can largely be said about ballooning tuition costs due to administrative fees & staff at schools that are trying to get good USNews rankings by having puppy days and massage therapists.
Being aware of this is a good way to prevent cost creep in your life.

like please explain how wanting to move to a city is FOMOing hard for city life? staying in some shit town w/ no job prospects sounds like a better plan to you?

and no i'm not going to live in a micro squalor if i don't have to. i have way to much shit for that it would be cramped. why would i want to live like that while adjusting to a new place? My main priority is making sure i have a space that I enjoy being in. What that means is good location, spacious, no nasty ass carpet, small prison windows, run down kitchen/bathroom. I'll compromise on somethings but if I don't find anything better im going w/ the ugly souless concrete box idc desu.

Damn I was trying to help you out but this is just dismal... This is why urban culture is non-existent and suburbs stretch across the entire country. Americans who just want to live where it's cool to be right then and don't give a single shit about where it is they are actually moving to kind of disgust me. Like you are COMPLETELY uninvested in what Seattle actually is
>big fuckin whoop who cares
Why would you move anywhere if this is how you feel about the place you're moving? You will never care about the character or health of the city because youll only be there to get your kicks and then peace out when you're bored. You will just be one more of the millions who are happy to see forests and preserved habitat bulldozed so more shitty copy/paste apartments can be put up, you won't blink once when poor racially diverse neighborhoods are invaded by white gentrification, when any flavor of personality the city has left is taken away you won't flinch because you do not care about any of it. You just want to live in "Seattle" I hope I'm wrong about this seriously because seeing interesting cities completely whitewashed and the nature surrounding them decimated just so bros right out of college can move there feel like they've made it makes me really sad.

All major cities have their flaws, should I let that stop me? Please stop with all these weird ass projections. You think bc i'm not looking at Seattle through some rose colored lens that I don't like it? How does that make sense? You're so dense, you have this silly view that what I feel is one dimensional. That I can't be aware of a cities faults and still be glad to move there. Like taking the pros with the cons doesn't fucking exsist. That wasn't me you're reply to, but, the point I was trying to make is that you don't even seem to really know yet whether you want to commit to Seattle but are about to drop wad on a trash apt.

You say you don't want to bounce around from place to place and want to say put, but then you also say you don't even know if you'll like Seattle/PNW (but you say you might? who knows?), then you say "it's nice to live in new places" and "have a feeling I'll end up back in East coast eventually." But you're in a bumfuck town and don't want to stay there (awwww), and so you can't even check places out in person. But that's ok, you just want to make a move.

I'll say it again, this reeks of FOMO. At this point, though, my best advice is to get that cookie cutter place. Leave the nicer places for the rest of us that actually want a home with soul.

Either way, I don't care and neither have interest in helping you design that place. It's boring work

okay that's where you're wrong and why you're so confused. I said who knows maybe ill like it enough to stay for a WHILE. I'm not moving there expecting to dislike it. the keyword here is a "while". Will I like it to stay there 5 years+? who knows.

> "have a feeling I'll end up back in East coast eventually."But you're in a bumfuck town and don't want to stay there (awwww)

god damn this is tiring your nitpicking so hard and aren't even good at it. you have a problem w/ selective reading. nothing I'm saying is hard to grasp. lets try again. i have family on the east coast and thats why I feel like I'll go back there eventually. eventually means years and years from now when I'm finally ready to settle down. Does that mean I have to move back to the bumfuck town I came from? No. I can move to NYC and be a 2-hour drive from that same bum fuck town and see them a lot more than if I had to fly all the way from the PNW. Does that make sense to you now? I understand you don't have all the details of my personal situation and can only respond based off what I write but please, just stop with the assumptions.

It's not a fear of missing out lol I want to move there bc it'll be very beneficial for me. This isn't a product I'm going to regret not buying when it sells out. It's job opportunities, experiences, and life.

If I were you I would consider moving your entire desk setup to one of your side walls instead to allow for more natural light into your room. I think a wood bookshelf next to your desk would look nice in your space and would be sturdier than a bamboo shelf, and you could surround the shelf with books and a plant to contrast with all your tech hardware. Not really feeling the legs you've currently got on your desk, since you seem to be going for a vaguely rustic industrial vibe with the old chair and side table for your lamp. I'd also consider cutting down the size of your mat/rug thing. That's just my opinion though.

What's been overlooked here so far is having textured finishes on walls, which could be stony, metallic, rag and sponge painted, color washed, and others. Pic is supposedly wallpaper though.

Could probably work better for closed walls while reserving flat matte for walls with openings.

this is a good bit of advice. Consider a nice area rug, and shitcan the sofa.
Because you have such a small space to work with, get pieces that dont take up alot of space. each piece and element of the interior needs to have a purpose and work with every other element, or it'll just look more disheveled. Got alot of clutter that needs to go, and reassess your direction.

Fair assessment. I did in fact consider putting the desk on the side, but decided against it because I would be looking at a wall. I do think that it's the 'correct' arrangement, though. I might still move it down the line.

The old chair and the side table were pieces the previous tenant left behind, and since we're quarantined and I haven't fully been able to look around to furnish adequately, they're just what I've been using. I'm not purposely going for the vaguely rustic industrial vibe, although I don't necessarily hate these pieces. I don't think the lamp/stand fit well next to the desk like that - I might move them.

The rug thing is just a canvas paint mat I was using and it's just a placeholder while I find something, but I agree, it's rather large.
Thanks for the comments though

You obviously don't live in Seattle. It's horrible.

I rented in some shitty 120-year-old buildings for the last couple years, which looked okay on the surface but were terribly laid out and half the renovations created even more problems than they solved.

The rate the city's been growing means your only options are either OP's cookie cutter nu-apartment marketed for hikikomori techies, or big houses that boomers bought before the crash, "fixed up" using cheap amateur labor and materials to parcel up and rent on craigslist as soon as possible.

My place appreciated about 33% in ~4 years, not counting the fact that my monthly payments go - in part - to principal.

It's not an awful decision, you just have to (1) be okay with staying somewhere for a while, (2) be handy enough to not need a handyman every two goddamn seconds, and (3) have enough money for the down payment.

Youre refuting my claims by calling me a child.. You can't even admit to yourself how destructive your morality is. Im in the process of moving too, all of these questions and more have been in my head. Maybe I have a very strong and one sided opinion on just one of the aspects of this argument. My argument has a few more levels of dimensionality than you are trying to make it out to have though.

The thing that I feel is different from you and I -in terms of lookimg for a place- is you have money, you know exactly what you want, youll get it and not think about any of the consequences of your decision. You ultimately don't care what your desires cause or the consequences of their existence. It does not matter if you say "I don't like deforestation or gentrification, I think it's terrible" and then go and move into a place that is the product of both of those. Your just hiding from a truth that is plainly obvious at that point.

I do not understand how it's holier than thou? I haven't yet stated how I am so much better than you. I haven't asserted my superiority. Because you feel defensive towards something I have said does not equate to me saying anything holier than thou. I have asserted my morality, and you have yet to display any moral faculties at all. Once you do then we can talk about it Im acting holier than thou.

So we can stop going in circles, Ill do it out right. What do you care about? What matters to you?

Cost and restraints. I'm not a architect or a city planner, so maybe someone could correct me here. But the cheapest way to build an apartment building is to build them in mass. This explains the samey look in neighborhoods even as old as these. The problem that cities have been facing for a long time is space, a lot of old cities suited the market of a single family homes, this is a waste of space. Smaller apartments such as these brownstones picture are also expensive for the city to maintain, trying to separating water, power, etc. Thus, it's also expensive for the residents. But what about design? It could play into the cost, but is this the excuse for them to be ugly? These brownstones are mass produced duplicates, but they are attractive and delightful to look at and I'm confident that their style will continue to be. It could be so they can keep the cost down, no need to pay the time for a team of architects that for work that now be done by anyone with the software.

>Renting
Throwing your money away as rent is almost always worse than buying property. My mortgage with taxes and insurance is $1400/month. I pay an extra $200-$300 every month towards principal and all of my utilities average out to under $200/month throughout the year.

Then add in the fact that you can deduct interest on your mortgage from your taxes, actually own something, and build wealth with the appreciation of an asset and you'd be an absolute moron to rent unless you paid significantly less than market rate and invested the difference.

you spent this entire thread making weak assumptions about me and now you finally want to ask

>what do you care about
>what matters too you

Well I care about living in a place I enjoy coming home too. I want to come home to good natural light/big windows, no carpet, high cielings and enough space. I don't want to feel cramped. I also want to stay within my budget. I want it to be inside the city. Does that place exsist. At this point I don't think so. I've reassesd my values and these are the things that matter to me. It doesn't have to be a modern apartment and the heigh cielings can be compromised.

Do I care about the cities health? sure. Do I want to preputate the cycle of gentrication? Of course not. Does that mean I should live outside the city and live in a place I don't want to?

Also, a lot of tech bros I know don't particularly excel in the virtues of espousing aesthetic philosophy, which is to say they don't care much if their apartment looks like monotonous garbage and has color-changing LEDs in the showerhead. The utility of it though is that by having less junk you don't have to expend as much effort at keeping things clean and dust free, which is ideal for the demands of modern society. Also it's better to have the coast clear so you can murder any crawling pests you might spot, because as sanitary as you may be, it won't mean that your neighbors are; and at times pests are just an unavoidable urban endemic.

Just a thought to consider but I'm sure many contrarian nigglers that have an ax to grind with everything contemporary will continue to whine about things anyway.

To at least play devil's advocate, you could just as easily call that the demands of modern laziness. I've had the privilege of growing up in a rich household (my parents have both been working as creative directors since the eighties and collected designer furniture since you could still make a whole lot of money in advertising 30-40 years ago) and sat in many different chairs from Barcelona chairs to anything Hans Wegner, Wassily chairs etc. The only chair that comes close to the Eames Lounge Chair after all those years is Corbusiers Grand Confort and I still prefer the Eames.
