Sometimes this board has an architecture thread. Can we have an /arch/ general thread?

Architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, and furniture design.

Frank Lloyd Wrong can suck a fat fucking chode, I don't know why people like that disgusting fucking building.
So get this, the family approach the guy to design an unobtrusive, low profile cabin in the woods that they can feel comfy in without being disturbed by strangers, so what does this egotistical jackass do?
1) He absolutely fucking annihilates the budget they set for his vanity project.
2) He makes the place absolutely fucking massive.
3) He paints it a colour that only makes it unobtrusive during one fucking season of the year, and it sticks out like a sore thumb every other season.
4) He tries to be "ahead of his time" by designing an unstable fucking cantilever that needs to be fixed decades later.
5) He designs the interior to be purposefully uncomfortable to force its inhabitants out onto these massive fucking balconies, instead of designing a friendly interior that lets them choose (I'm 6'4 and it was disgustingly uncomfortable to be in such a wide space with such a low ceiling).
6) The family wanted privacy, but what if you go sunbathe on the main balcony - you can be viewed with your fucking tits out from the guest bedroom, the son's bedroom and the office.

Back in 2012 when my family went over to the states, we drove from our relatives near Philly, across PA to see this heaping pile of shit because my brother is a (then aspiring, now qualified) architect who wanted to dickride this overblown prick's abomination.

True. I picked that image mostly because its iconic. I think it looks kinda cool to, but strictly speaking it isn't well designed.

In his defence though, the client always has a chance to look at the design and provide feedback. If they didn't like the design they could have told him to fuck off. They basically let him walk all over them so they could brag about having an FLW designed home to their rich friends. They were totally complicit in his ego project

This is exactly why the building is shit, because the architect wanted to be an artist. Architects aren't artists and architecture is not art. When they think they are creating art they create ostentatious bullshit. they went into architecture because they couldn't actually cut it in the art world because it requires true creativity not rehashes of the last centuries sculptural movements with a door attached. If they didn't have their name attached to the building a good 95% of them would find some other career. I hate these wannabe artists, the great architects of the past 5000 years would have laughed at them and their delusions

Not at all. I'm an architect student. This path just has the tendency to attract failed artists, their medicore visions can be better sold with a "practical" aspect attached to it because if it stood on its own as pure art it would be trashed and discarded. Both art and architecture done at the highest level are equally difficult but require different talents. Solid careers like architects can have bad practitioners because in the end no matter what you have something tangible in the end, for art you don't have this leeway, it's either the best or worthless

Original FLW hater here. You make two assertions that I wanted to address.
>Architecture is not art
I don't agree with this, and I think the reason is that a lot of people have a definition of art that is too narrow and not correct. People view art as a luxury, and one that - ironically for an era of panem et circensis - is often seen as superfluous and non-essential. The other perversion of the definition of art common to these times is that it's all about "making a statement", rather than "aspiring to beauty and form", which is absolutely what it traditionally was, and what it should be.
If you've lived on a box spring in a prefabricated flat, if you've worked in a cubicle in a telephone centre, you realise that the beauty and form of the environment you live in is not a superfluous, non-essential luxury. It is absolutely necessary for the human soul. And form IS a function, in this respect.
Architecture is functional art. It's art that you immerse yourself in, that you live in.
>Architects are just failed artists
A bad architect has failed at the art of architecture. A good architect is a good artist.
FLW was "trying to make a statement". That's why his art failed, just the same as so many contemporary artists' work, the likes of which you find in MoMA etc, fails.

there are arch boards (not here of course) but there was a big push against anonymity out there, in part because everyone wanted their post to be self-promotion (in a positive way). the place became less fun after that - and the vitriol and the cliches run deep: the 'practicalists' the 'classicists', the not so arty artists all being assholes to each other without a lot of people looking for a middle ground - you get that here as well a bit - its already in this thread - architecture strikes a fucking nerve i guess.

Art and architecture are both propaganda for the ruling class. Music is for going to war or to sing about the war after it is over. Poetry is the only true revolutionary force, although sometimes it can be used for destruction, since it has original "Shiva-essence". But since it's all one big loop the philosopher of yesterday inspires the poet of tomorrow, if only out of contempt for the man on non-action (ie Napoleon).

Wrong. All architecture stems from fashion.

>Enclosures (walls) were said to have their origins in weaving. Just as fences and pens were woven sticks, the most basic form of a spatial divider still seen in use in parts of the world today is the fabric screen. Only when additional functional requirements are placed on the enclosure (such as structural weight-bearing needs) does the materiality of the wall change to something beyond fabric.

>The mat and its use in primitive huts interchangeably as floors, walls, and draped over frames was considered by Gottfried Semper to be the origins of architecture.

Not a fan? You sound like Wright is your fucking bull or something. Defending Wright's legacy as some sort of architectural messiah is just as much a dumb meme as the people who say he was a hack. A realistic and objective take (mine because I'm so fucking smart) is that he was a very talented architect who made some iconic work. There are flaws in the livability of his work, but on the whole these are easy to give since he was trailblazing. The first innovators of a trend are rarely the perfectors of it and often times are aware of the shortcomings of their work and accept it in order to get the new idea out in the world. why did you greentext Schloss-Neuschwanstein when you were replying to me talking about Fallingwater?

Personally I like Anthroposophical architecture. I prefer the first Goetheanum to the second.
It varies stylistically. Some of it comes across as typically asinine expressionist architecture.
But when it's done tastefully, it realy works.
Erik Asmussen's is kind of neither, to me. It's somewhere else but very distinctive. His buildings often looked like tall, colourful, irregular barns or silos.
I personally believe Joan Allen's architecture was the most tasteful and the most faithful to its intended purpose.
In many of these buildings, you walk in and there's a sense of proportion and openness. There is an organic irregularity to them that mitigates unnatural, boxy right-angled corners.
Quite the opposite of Fallingwater, they are buildings designed to be comfortable to live in. Soft, warm, inviting and they don't impose on you.

Terunobu Fujimori is one of my favorites. His designs are the perfect amount of whimsy and make fantastic use of traditional natural materials. I think he succeeds because he spent most of his life writing studies on architectural eccentricities and didn't begin designing until he reached his forties. He has a vision that isn't limited by convention.

Germany was without a doubt Europe's last and a bastion of virtue.

Hitler liberated his home country, Austria, from a dictator, and enforced the self-determination of the German people. Czechia even agreed to go under the umbrella of protection.

But thanks to the Anglo, Europe was destroyed, both physically, political and morally.
