14915882 No.14915882 [Reply] [Original]

Has anyone found a way to merge trad/prep/ivy and street together for the modern day?

pic related is somewhat close to what I have in mind but I want to incorporate sweater vests, dress shirts, etc, into my streetwear wardrobe.

pic related is wearing dickies, doc m boots, target sweatshirt, and generic dress shirt btw

Sometimes I wear sweat pants and peacoats or long double breasted coats together. Maybe an informal shirt too. That's only if I am being really informal.

And with a cashmere scarf too.

Honestly, I just try to go for the trad look without overthinking, we live in modern society so those influences will just appear. Also, wear a Columbia waterproof jacket when it's raining or cold at night. Oh and also shop at Target.
If I wear my new balances instead of boots, it just becomes Japanese comfy streetwear

what boots would suit the look? I’m thinking duck boots, wallabees, jodhpurs.. fill in anything I’m missing

Peacoat + hoodie, slim colorful denim/ pants and some "smart sneakers" - not those awful dress hybrids though. Suede or canvas, something less chunky like Toms or Vans

yah that's basically it, mixing pieces, typically with a high-low approach. I'll do a typical trad fit, but say instead of the tweed jacket I'll put on a dickies eisenhower jacket.
My favorite though is just using a pair of bass weejuns or allen edmond loafers I got for cheap on ebay or grailed in place of whatever cheap beater sneaker you would usually throw on.

When I see young people do it, it always looks like they're making a grievous error of classical men's style rather than an intentional blend of the two. However, I find the older generations don't come off like that (to me at least) since they know what rules to break because they were born and raised in an era when traditional menswear was prevalent and had relatively strict rules by which one must adhere to. In that regard, I suppose it is much like sprezzatura wherein the older generations practice a tasteful degree of slovenliness in their wear while many members of the newer generations do it to a distasteful degree often in a garish and flamboyant manner (compare Gianni Agnelli with his grandson Lapo Elkann to see what I mean). Many of the fits in this thread look good, but I question how much they actually capture the idea. An example I can think of in my own life is an old philosophy professor I had who would come in wearing very nice charcoal and navy sportcoats with jeans and sneakers (amongst a variety of other outfits). He was an eccentric Lebanese man who could speak at both a high and low level. I suppose the style worked with him because he seemed to live it.
