Contrary to the view held by conventional wisdom, taste in perfume isn’t “subjective”. As in most other things, judging the merits of a scent requires an education (by which I mean invested effort, rigour, and experience). Crap is crap: there isn’t anything subjective about THAT...and the current ‘scentscape’ is mostly rubbish — an aesthetic wasteland. ADDENDUM: Toward the end of his nearly seventy-year career in perfumery, Edmond Roudnitska intimated that perfumers themselves ought to be the custodians of their artistry: it is THEY who must take it upon themselves to preserve the standards of their craft, to assure that accountants and marketing departments do not triumph at all costs over the integrity of the end-product, and above all, to educate consumers on the aesthetics and grammar of perfume. Let’s not have any illusions: corporate perfumery is Big Business, no doubt. As in all commercial enterprises, the bottom line is king; but it doesn’t all have to be utterly shameless chicanery. After all, profitability, pride in one’s product, and respect for the consumer don’t have to be mutually exclusive. As to the act itself, given the standards of the release in question, it was IMHO an entirely sensible reaction

Just ordered a whole bunch of samples recently and these are my thoughts in case people are wondering about the same fragrances.

Roma Profumum Dulcis in Fumde
>Smells like a freshly-peeled clementine and vanilla, love how simple and direct this is. Probably my favorite from this batch, I think I will order the Travel Spray size of this one to test it out further.

MEMO Winter Palace
>I was very disappointed with how little I liked this one considering the hype I had. I read a lot of good things, but it seems like such a tame and balanced scent. Has the most generic drydown I have smelled but the smoky tea scent is cool. I cannot see myself spending 300 dollars on this.

Zoologist Bee
>Another very direct and simple fragrance, this shit literally just smells like honey. That's it, if you like honey and gourmands this is for you. Very sweet and floral.

Other stuff I sampled: Zoologist Trex, MEMO African Leather, Slumberhouse Norne, and Naomi Goodsir Or du Serail.

Feel free to ask any questions about my thoughts or if you have any recommendations for me personally.

TOP FAVORITES

Squid: Deep blue summer fragrance with a silky smooth base note love it.

Camel: A mix of beautiful dried fruits. don't know if i would wear this too work it almost smells too elegant . This is something you would wear on your wedding.

Bee: Powerful honey and beeswax smell it's so intoxicating good lord.

Nightingale: Gorgeous scent for girls. Smells like a mix of plums and flowers.

GREAT FRAGS

Civet: Sour, sweet and woodsy. The drydown is much better than the opening .

Moth: nice fall fragrance. Smells like a mixture of freshly baked pies you smell while walking through a farmers market mixed in with a wood/musk sour note.

Hummingbird: Another great scent I would love to smell on a girl. Smells exactly like taking a huge whiff of some lilac flowers.

Rhino:One of the better Tobacco,Leather , Rum/bourbon scents ive smelled.

Good:

Panda: I smell fresh apples with a bit of an oriental earthiness coming from the bamboo, Pretty good summer frag but not for me. I lean more towards the bluish aquatic scents .

Bat: Imagine you're in a damp dark cave where fruit bats have been feeding on tropical fruits. That's what comes to mind when smelling this. I like the scent a lot but I wouldn't know when to wear it.

Dragonfly : I don't get much from it but the cherry note I do smell is nice.

Macaque: I smell Apple, Wood and flowers. I like it more than Panda. I think this could be a year round scent.

Elephant : If you've ever played around with fallen leaves in autumn as a kid you've smelled this scent. You get that earthy leaf / fermented tea smell . Once again I really appreciate the smell but I don't know when i would wear it.

MEH TIER

T Rex: Smells like walking into a 70 year old alcoholics house who hasn't taken a shower in 4 weeks.

Hyrax: Sour and astringent medicine

Dodo: If you get off on flocks of pigeons shitting on you than this is for you.

Beaver and Chameleon: Both smell like fabreez air fresheners

I agree. I own Chameleon and I think it’s great. I can see how some wouldn’t love it, the frangipani and jasmine combination does kind of create a sort of nail polish vibe, but I like it.

I also own and love Dodo. Kind of smells a bit like blue sour balls to me. Again, I can see how not everyone would love it, but I enjoy the combination of the litchi-raspberry-line fruity thing with the green notes. Just does it for me.

I do love Zoologist in general, though. I have Bat, Civet, Dodo, Squid, Chameleon, and wear them all (though I’m very sparing with Bat), plus I just copped Bee, so I may be a bit biased.

Its a fantastic scent, its very realistic green, like a fresh leaf you've snapped in half. It does have a pretty prominent coconut note, kind of creamy and sweet, which kept me from purchasing for myself, but objectively it rounds out the fragrance really beautifully.

The coconut is more prominent in the EDP iirc.

I guess you’re referencing the norne video I put up? I’m not big on pine scents but wow, norne really is something. It’s not shocking necessarily but so “real” if that makes sense. Nothing has come close to the density and photorealism it has. I’m not sure I’m going to cop like I said I was in the video because I’ve been mulling it some. Wonderful but 180 for 30ml I’m not so sure. Over 150 and I want to be “shocked” if that isn’t too meme-y.

Thank you for the post. My autism will only let me smell one at a time. We seem to have similar sentiments except I think chameleon is much better than “meh” tier. switch dragonfly with moth. Moth could have been a “noir” bee but instead they made it a piss bukkake. Trex should be above meh just for the artistic value. I know you’ve never smelled anything like it. It’s not exactly “wearable” but a marvel no less.

Norne is slicing a tree in half and huffing all wet sap and resins and taking wet fresh pine needles and making some kind of pine/fir earth orgy mashing them altogether on the sliced stump. add some incense and peppery spice. I’ve caught the slumberhouse bug I’m literally about to just sell my fucking nasomatto except my beloved precious baraonda and buy the whole line minus sibet (goat hair no thanks zoologist is enough animalic) minus sedanne (strawberry is a niche I don’t need filled my cape heartache fits that just fine)

Have you tried Sadanne? I own it and it’s actually really snice. Smells like champagne, roses, and strawberries with a little animalic funk from the ambergris. It’s the smell of post-Valentine’s day picnic sex.

Haven’t tried it. Admittedly I’m curious. I’m curious about them all but altogether that’s big money, oy vey. I’m on a waiting list for the next kiste batch (yes there will be another). Have you tried ore? Or jeke? I feel that since I have Baque, jeke may be redundant

>> No.14900142

>>14900127
I’ve tried all the currently available Slumberhouse frags. Josh is many things, but stingy with samples he is not. Jeke is snice, but I feel it, Baque, and Kiste have enough similarity that they may not all be worth having. Jeke, I’d say is probably the most different but least complex of the three. Ore was just smooth vanilla, whiskey, and cacao to me. Kind of smells a bit like artificial caramel.

I own Kiste, Sadanne, Grev, and Norne, and I actually think Sadanne may be my favorite. Probably the only Slumberhouse frag more wearable than it is Grev.

>> No.14900160

Thinking on it, you know what Ore reminds me of? Those butterscotch candies old people have. Like, the shitty artificial ones they buy from the dollar store because they’re too poor to afford Werther’s Originals. The ones with no saltiness at all, just straight artificial butterscotch sweetness. That’s what Ore smells like. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a snice enough scent, but that’s what it reminds me of.

I sold black phantom due to a similar candy realization and a weird peanut note that was just wildly apparent. Somewhat unrelated I know, but in a similar enough vein. You unshilled me on ore and shilled me on sadanne. Boozy tobacco is my favorite type of fragrance though so I’m not quite unshilled on jeke. Rhino is very good but very low energy and meditative, I’m looking for something more upbeat. Luca Turin was spot on with his rhino review. Very somber. I wore it out a couple nights and it all just felt so melancholy.

>> No.14900210

>>14900197
Jeke is very good, if you like the genre it’s worthwhile. I have tons of frags that are pretty similar in my collection. If you like it, don’t let that deter you.

I own and love Black Phantom. I do get what you mean about the peanut note, though. It does smell like peanut butter in the opening. I do love that sugary drydown with the bitter, slightly astringent coffee and rum in the background, though. Plus, I wore it to my sister’s wedding and wound up getting a blowjob from one of her bridesmaids in a conference room, so there’s a happy association there.

Ah hookeranon, I’ll get you and kouros poster on for an interview one day. Believe it or not you’re the one who put the bug in my ear way back to look into black phantom. I still really like it but the nut notes just didn’t settle quite right. Maybe I’ll come back around to it one day I’ve come back around to some frags over time. Sometimes you have to let something go and see if it comes back to know you really love it. My biggest fuck up was selling my mortal skin, you can’t even find it anymore. It was just so opulent and formal I’d never have a place to wear it but it was magnificent. I got it for an unbelievable price too, still kicking myself for not holding on tighter.

>> No.14900240

Y’know, Black Phantom took a bit for me too. I got a sample a few years back and I thought it smelled like weird peanut butter almost right away. Came back to the sample a while back and that time I started getting all the other nuances and it just clicked and I had to cop a bottle. Weird how that happens sometimes. I didn’t think much of Straight to Heaven at first either, but now it’s one of my favorites.

I’d for sure do an interview as long as we can find some way to do it anonymously.

Do not listen to him, he knows nothing. Invictus is a fruity fresh, sporty fragrance with an aquatic tone. It is good for daily use and clubbing. I like it, but it is not anything special. One of its main attractions is that it is a workhorse fragrance that you can use liberally on the day-to-day basis since it is versatile and relatively inexpensive for a modern fragrance. Here in europe I can find the 150ml for under €70. It is likely quite a bit cheaper in the US, as per usual.
Bleu de Chanel is a functionally equivalent fragrance on a similar price range, although it smells quite differently.
However, if you only want it for clubbing, Versace Eros is somewhat similar fragrance and can be had for slightly less on the 200ml formulation, which will last you a very long time. Invictus is better for daily use, though. Longevity and projection is about the same.
