Because most of them have a warped sense of what is Good fashion. Think about being constantly surrounded by student who dress like shit, and having colleagues who either wear outdated fits, or have given up, who also have the same warped sense of Fashion...
There are also expectations of dressing "Appropriately" and the unspoken uniformity that seeps through the school teacher's socio-culture.

For instance, i had a 30ish 6ft 2in (8/10) chem teacher that dressed like this everyday with slight variations on color and outerwear. Horny highschool girls thought that he was peak men's effay. When really, his fashion was just kinda hacky, boring, very unoriginal.
Its true that he was possibly the best dressed teacher in the school but saying that is like saying he was the smartest dog in the world... Point is the pool has a pretty low bar.

As of tips. You should consider choosing a more effay profession.
I Think it would take quite a bit of discipline and structural habits to staying effay.

>$50-60k is plenty for someone who only works 10 months out of the year. Plus they get all those long holiday weekends off

Ahh, the good old "teachers have many holidays haha they must be lazy". Try being a teacher for a year. You always have work when you come back home (preparing lessons, checking papers, administrative work). This includes weekends. You have to do a lot of "charity" work, like overseeing events on evenings, or going on school trips. The holidays just cancel out the overtime you make during the working weeks. Then you have to deal with obnoxious parents. The students literally eat your energy, and you basically have to be constantly on peak performance if you want to survive the classroom. You don't become a teacher if you're lazy, uninterested or unmotivated. You simply won't manage for long. You'd be better off at some drone IT job at some company. It pays better too.
As for fashion, it's a fine line between relatability and boring. So a Ned Flanders will lose respect. But being too much Streetwear will cross over into "how do you do fellow kids" territory. If you LARP a certain look, the kids will see it immediately and poke at it. Wear what you do with confidence, and stay true to your self.

It's hard to dress as a teacher because you have to look kind of professional, be comfortable all day and also be kind of sexless.

When I taught, I stuck with two different silhouettes (straight leg cropped trousers + a knit sweater or a-line knee-length skirt + sweater) but it depends on the country/climate and what your life will be like.

At first I had expected to only wear skirts and little pumps and carry a handbag and take the train everyday, but in reality I had to lug around 4-5 textbooks a day and it made more sense to wear sneakers and ride a bike. I also had enough spare time to like express my fashion sense outside of the workplace. Even if I couldn't wear them to school, I still had the chance to wear leather pants or dumb crop tops to parties or the gym.

Consider how you'll get to work, how much stuff you'll need to carry and the socioeconomic level of the students you're teaching. If you're at a public school, your role as a teacher goes beyond simply teaching. They need to believe you're on their side. If you dress like you're in a class beyond theirs (lots of expensive clothing/logos), they might not be able to relate to you.

Also most teachers dress badly because they literally don't care about fashion.
