>Ralph Lauren in 1955
>Ralph was born in 1939 in the Bronx, NYC, to Ashkenazi Jewish immigrant parents from Belarus. His last name was originally Lifshitz, which eventually he changed to Lauren at the young age of 16 after years of teasing at school. Even as a young man, he developed a taste for fashion. He studied business at college, but ended up enlisting in the military for two years.
>In 1964, after leaving the military, Ralph met Ricky Ann Low-Beer at the eye doctor’s office where she worked. Just before Christmas that year, the couple married. They would go on to have three children, Dylan, David, and Andrew. Ralph worked briefly for Brooks Brothers before moving on to work for Beau Brummell, a tie maker named after the famous 18th century dandy.
>In 1967, Ralph convinced his manager at Beau Brummell to let him create is own tie line. As a sports fan, Ralph named his line “Polo” hoping to convey the athletic sophistication of the sport. In the 1960s, ties were being mass produced in synthetic materials with a trim shape; bucking the trends, Ralph cut his ties wide and had them handmade with classic fabrics. He made $500,000 in his first year alone.

>Lauren’s interest in resurrecting classic fashion didn’t stop with ties; even though he had no design experience of his own, he would have his own clothes custom tailored to to mimic the look of the traditional English gentleman. For this kind of man, his clothes represented his wealthy, worldly, chic lifestyle that Lauren wanted to emulate. After the success of his tie line, he was able to expand into tailored suits and shirts the following year. A reporter at the time, Buffy Birrittella, noted that Lauren was “merging the tailored heritage of Europe with the American sensibility of sportswear and way of living.”

>Joshua Ellis began as a cloth merchant, providing fabric to local garment manufacturers. Demand was so high that they began weaving textiles themselves. The small mill has partnered with Ralph Lauren for more than 25 years, and the companies work as true collaborators. The results are achingly soft cashmeres woven in patterns that are the ultimate expression of English romanticism and tradition—all exclusive to Ralph Lauren.
>For those of us obsessed with Purple Label tailoring, there are countless beloved fabrics that we recognize as decidedly RL—many of these were woven at Joshua Ellis. Deep green Glen plaids with a faint purple windowpane, pale wheat herringbone that is softer than it has any right to be—this is what the mill is capable of. At first, the relationship had a very simple reason for being. As Jerry Lauren, Ralph Lauren’s brother and his longtime head of men’s design, explains, “Ralph went for the best.” That was Joshua Ellis. What they discovered is that they could make very specific fabrics that only existed in Ralph’s imagination.

It's funny how "TIP" clearly welcomes loud colors, like Kentucky Reds etc. Pink. Yet frowns on Black. But I think that is just "Southern States" TIP.

>In seventeenth-century England there existed a bitter conflict in social ideology between two forces-the Royalist “Cavaliers,” who were faithful to King Charles I, and the Puritans, who were followers of Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), the military, political, and religious figure who led the Parliamentarian victory in the English Civil
War (1642-1649). This conflict was a battle of lifestyles, as the two waning camps sought to gain political, religious, and cultural control of English society. The Cavaliers were aristocrats who only superficially followed the teachings of the Anglican Church. Their main penchant was for a life of indulgence (at least
as the Puritans perceived it). They wore colorful clothes, flamboyant feathered hats, beards, and long flowing hair.

>The Puritans,on the other hand, frowned precisely upon this type of fashion, because of the “degenerate lifestyle” that they perceived it represented.Known as the “Roundheads,” Cromwell’s followers cropped their hair very short, forbade all carnal pleasures, and prohibited the wearing of frivolous clothing. They wore dark suits and dresses with white shirts and collars. Their clothes conveyed sobriety, plainness, and rigid moralism.

>The Cavaliers were in power throughout the 1620s and the 1630s. During this period the Puritans escaped from England and emigrated to America, bringing with them their lifestyle, rigid codes of conduct, and clothing styles. In 1645 the Puritans, led by Cromwell, defeated the Royalist forces and executed the lung in 1649

My point is that you can be TIP without wearing bright Red, Pink, etc. But if you only wear Black, it's not really TIP, because it is playing into that "Puritan" aspect. But yet, dressing only in drab, mild dark colors, is modest. Color just in itself is very important. Just by adding one Bright Color into a dark fit, it automatically makes the fit less modest, and more gaudy. Bright color in itself is gaudy.

In Medieval times the Nobility would lavishly adorn themselves just to show the peasants who was in charge. Then they would outlaw any peasants from wearing the same colors or adornments. Only the Nobility could wear bright colors and it helped to separate them as a Class. But it also was a representation of Order. The Monarchy and Nobility represented Authority and Order in Society. But today, we see the opposite, there is no Nobility in America, and if you are a person in Power, you are wearing a Dark Suit and Tie.

>and if you are a person in Power, you are wearing a Dark Suit and Tie.
For me, TIP is about poking fun at this aspect. It's not taking things so seriously and being "Puritan". And it also subconsciously signifies that if you are (let's say) a member of the Elite class, you can wear whatever you want, because you don't answer to anyone, you don't have to run some maze in Corporate Dark Suit, and be a member of the "Borg" to try and accumulate your wealth. I am just speaking specifically about Color.

But at the same time, an outsider could view you as simply being a member of the underclass with no taste. Dressing in all these bright contrasting colors. Iow, like a Puritan viewing a Cavalier with that same distaste, but in reverse.

It's a complex topic.

>> No.14837991

>>14837975
The point is, if you wear only black, or only dark brown, or just one dark color, for the whole fit, you are essentially destroying the playfulness aspect. And a central tenet of TIP is being playful. That is why wearing only black makes it very difficult to still be TIP, because color is very important in removing that "Puritan" aspect of the fit.

The addition of Color, into an existing all black fit, immediately breaks up the fit, into parts. Because our eyes can sense the different shades. The more "Parts" you divide your body into, the less cohesive and "Authoritative" the fit becomes.

I think TIP is about having that sense of Authority, but not trying to overtly show that you are.

Is it about blending in? Or standing out? Context is everything. You still have to "play the game" no matter where you are, and dress in a sort of Uniform, to show that you are one of them, and not a Rebel or "Fashion Terrorist". But so much of modern Fashion consumption is based on the youth market and rebellion. Rebellion sells clothes to young people.

Thoughts on buckle loafers?

>> No.14839432

I remember when I was a kid, every school I went to had 2-4 unusually tall kids who were autistic/retarded/special needs, who were always accompanied by a tard wrangler. I sometimes wonder if those guys discovered 4chan, and that's where this weird height obsession comes from.

>> No.14839441

>>14839428
I personally like them, but they're not STRICTLY TIP, TIP loafers are penny and tassel loafers, I also think Horsebit, Venetian, and Belgian loafers are acceptable, but many people hate those. I've never seen a source that confirms buckle loafers as TIP, but those look nice, so I say go for it. Wearing loafers that aren't completely Trad won't clash with a trad wardrobe.

A different white denim fit from PPL. Let's just say, "Blue Jeans" are going to make it very hard to pull off a TIP look. But the beige and white have a refined look to them, think Safari or other Imperialist activity.

Iow, a foreign Imperialist/adventure function, vs a domestic (Blue Jeans) prole "working in the cotton fields" function.
