Thrift stores, antique malls, flea markets, auctions, (estate sales too, but they can be expensive). It can be a fun hobby to chase funky old stuff. You never know what you'll find, and you often find nothing worth buying. Furniture like a sofa or mattress is potentially gross, but lamps, metal or real-wood furniture, and especially kitchen stuff - I can't for the life of me understand why people buy chinese garbage from Walmart or Pier-1. That's actually been my goal the last few years - eliminate all chinese shit from my house. Except for electronics, I'm almost there.

I am OP from such thread. The bare necessities at as follow; you need a structure, can be made of anything (mine is constructed of PVC, plastic tarp & large cardboard boxes. Lots of extension chords and surge protectors. The kitchen is small with little food. Toaster, microwave, fridge & a big 10 gallon jug + bowl = sink, we fill it from the tap outside (free water). Lots of fans are necessary during the summer, especially if your roof is metal, because it will get 10+ degrees warmer inside than outside. A window AC is necessary during summer months, inside of your structure. During the winter we make use of propane heaters, a large kerosene turbine heater and a space heater in our space. If you have a lot of clothes you will need to save money for coin laundering unless you can figure something else out. I don’t have in home internet, I just use my hotspot to connect anything wireless to the internet. Wet whipes and public restrooms are your friends, the folks at the gas station on the corner know me by name, all of them. You cannot do this alone, and it is not for weak people. You will need friends for favors, the occasional sleepover or shower. I am fortunate enough to not be alone in this world, which makes living in this warehouse bearable & even pleasant at times. Soon we are building a bathroom & seperate living space. I have been living here since February. Pic related

Definitely a jump in price but it was worth it to still live on campus (I like to sleep in and hate fighting over parking) and have my own room. What are your opinions on people who are collectors who display their collections? Tacky, or could it be effay if done right?

I don’t mean just nerdy stuff, like anime, vidya, comic books, etc, but for any type of collection, like vinyl records, teacups, beersteins, stamps, dolls, vinyl toys, etc

This isn’t my pic, but I thought it was a nice example of displaying a weeb collection

I have my own personal collection of Disney and other animated movie memorabilia because I’m an animation nerd and aspiring storyboard artist, and I’m trying to find ways to display what I have without it looking like a cluttered mess

That’s pretty hot. Feels Eames-y. Thanks for the introduction.

Hesitant to do something super drastic right now, because I’m on a pretty tight budget compared to when I initially got the core pieces.

As with anything, your place reflects your personality and tastes. A room like that works if you’re already a creative type involved in a similar industry.

Collections can be /fa/ if you’re setting up your collections as if they’re already part of the room and they end up acting as decor. But it has to work with the style of the room. A comic book or anime collection would look out of place on early 20th century furniture, but a teacup or old doll collection would not

Depends on the collection, the layout of the room, and how the collection is displayed

Anyone remember that show Extreme Collectors? There was one guy who collected antique glass bottles. He even had a bottle worth $250k. He displayed his collection on shelves in front of a big window. I’d be paranoid about people looking in from the outside, but it was very nice how it was displayed on the inside.

The idea is to think of your collection as decor for your place, and not have your place look like a store or museum

I collect older cameras, but I don't have my entire collection out on display. I just have my favorites and most used on a shelf, and then have the rest in a cabinet. It keeps things looking clean and organized, so I'd suggest that unless you have a massive collection and it just isn't possible.

As with all things; moderation is key. Dont have your entire collection on display. Maybe make use of a modern display cabinet in which you can keep things confined to one space, protect the items from dust and oily hands while also keeping a more modest looking living space.

what are the vases in the corner? put some plants or books or some of your stuff there or remove it.
Also id say put that small cupboard next to your couch id say because this will open up the corner and make your room more spacious. Get some nice pillows. Is your couch dirty ugly colour or why do you cover it like this?
If you can get a table that fits the cupboard. I dont like the look of that tv shelf aswell. Maybe spread the boxes around the room that will make it less cluttered.

>what are the vases in the corner? put some plants or books or some of your stuff there or remove it.
The middle one is some ceramic one my sister gave me that I’ve since removed. The top shelf is a candle holder.

>Also id say put that small cupboard next to your couch id say because this will open up the corner and make your room more spacious.
I’m afraid nothing will fit next to the couch. It takes up the entirety of the space between my door and the wall.

Get some nice pillows. Is your couch dirty ugly colour or why do you cover it like this?
Couch is too small for that lol, but I got a nice blue throw blanket to make it more comfy. The couch is a shitty black Walmart futon. I figured black would look terrible, so I decided to get a tan cover.

>If you can get a table that fits the cupboard. I dont like the look of that tv shelf aswell.
Yeah neither do I. I’d like to upgrade the coffee table soon. I got it from goodwill for 10$, just because I needed something.

>Maybe spread the boxes around the room that will make it less cluttered.

I'd say drop the purple and grey colour scheme. It's pretty drab and doesn't work well for any cozy nighttime settings.
Ditch the rug, coffee table, and purple blanket and try to work in some warmer colours with the grey.
The overhead lighting you have on is also really cold and probably unflattering.
The painting doesn't match anything else in the room and it looks like you bought it from ikea.
I like the plants and that lamp though.
