I believe it's a personality thing, some people have the same tastes and views for a whole life while there are people who are changing all the time and understand it could anchor you in views that will become obsolete for you in future. You incrase your chances of not regretting the tattoo if it's a classic timeless design that is well made and you made it with some purpose. This is what I think so far but I didn't think about it too thorough.

For me I got my first one in a pretty concealable area (upper thigh) so that if I realized shortly after getting it that it was a mistake, it was at least an easy to hide mistake. I ended up loving it though and wanted more tattoos in more visible areas shortly after.

My thing is that the artwork has to be good and detailed. We're lucky that we live in an age where quality of art is not hard to come by with tattoos, and so even if whatever emotional/personal connection you had to your tattoo "wears off", it will still simply look good.

I'd recommend not getting something purely out of sentiment. Don't get words, dates, names, or otherwise "simple" tattoos that have a deeper meaning (unless minimalism is your thing). Focus on really getting a good artist and you'll be less likely to regret it.

They represent the person you were at a given point in time. I sometimes see it as an interesting duality between a person as itself, unchanging, and the many phases through which one goes.

Personally, I have 10+ and have pretty much always done them with people I care for. The design can be rather minimalist but the personal meaning is definitely there for me. Also, I love the smaller, patchwork & text style.

I can tell you for sure that nobody thinks you're a tought /cool guy just because you went to a studio on a saturday morning and paid an obscene amount of money to get a indelible drawing (that you thought about for months) on your skin.
I do like tattoos, i think they can be nice, but if you see a person with a cool tattoo, next time think about how would that person look WITHOUT it: 99% of the time you'll find out that they would look EXACTLY the same.

exactly. someone asked people earlier in this thread if there's any regret about tattoos. tattoos you'd regret are typically trends (i.e. 90's tribals, or thrash polka) or possibly spontaneous decisions (i.e. walking into a bangkok tattoo parlour)

i do think that tattoos are potentially a bit dramatic and forced because they are usually inflicted to oneself, which is why the attention craving and drama queen aspect of it should be minimized.7

just choose something that fits your character, and don't be whiny about it. and don't fear the decrease in quality over time; tattoos are supposed to look shitty once you're seventy. just like the body they're put onto

I have a couple that are dedicated to music that is special to me. If in the case that that music isn't relevant to me any longer, I kept them ambiguous enough to still be reasonable to keep on my skin. They're also very well done too so it's not a huge deal either way.

I have a question. I've done the research and it's very varied in what to do. I got my first tattoo done yesterday and I wanted to know how long I should have a gauze wrap on my arm. I let the arm stay unwrapped when I'm at home and for work I know I'll have to tie it up cause I wear long sleeves so I will have to protect the skin. But how long have you all had your tattoos protected with a gauze before you let the skin rub against your clothes?

Also how do you wrap a gauze around your arm? My tattoo is on my right upper arm so my right hand is kind of useless. I wanted to know if anyone has a technique or a video is available somewhere. Everywhere I look there is videos of someone helping you.

>> No.14782875

>>14782794
I'm not sure if you're saying gauze for lack of a better word or if that's actually what you've put on your tattoo but you should never have something like gauze on a tattoo at all, the reason being the porous fabric will adhere to the skin as it heals and the removal of the fabric will prematurely remove healing skin cells, often times damaging the tattoo. You should only have your tattoo covered for a few hours max after the process is over, and only for the purpose of absorbing extra blood. Once you remove that covering it is important to keep it clean, supple, and exposed to the oxygen to facilitate the healing process. A loose covering like a cotton shirt will not hurt the tattoo in any way, unless you're experience friction from day to day activities. Next time you're tattooed you may want to ask about a tegaderm dressing to keep you more fully protected if that's your concern. Your tattoo artist should have explained all this to you after the tattoo was over, but you could probably call them if you have questions too.

>> No.14782935

>>14782875
I work in an office environment so I have a dress shirt and I move a lot from one place to another, and I work in the record room so I do a lot of pushing and pulling. I was told a roll of gauze is good to use when I'm not able to keep my arm out in the open. I also use aquaphor, since that seemed to be a popular item when I did my tattoo aftercare research. The skin doesnt seem to be bleeding anymore, but I'm still kinda paranoid about what to do with it. I'll look into tegaderm.

>> No.14782965

>>14782935
Like I said, you definitely don't want to use gauze because the skin will start to adhere itself to it, it's also way too tight on healing skin. That amount movement won't be enough to negatively impact the tattoo, just make sure your shirts are loose and a soft material and you'll be just fine. Aquaphor is good to use, just dont overdo it. It's an emollient, so it only traps in the moisture from when you shower, it doesn't actually provide much moisture itself so keeping it clean (unscented liquid antibacterial handsoap) is the best thing you can do. Always apply Aquaphor right afterwards. Switch to and unscented lotion after a week or so and you should be fully healed in about two weeks time.

>> No.14782998

>>14782965
Can you give me some recommendations? I thought aquaphor was supposed to be the only thing you need.

No gauze, loose linen shirts. I will focus on that. But what should I do about my clothes rubbing against the tattoo? The skin is still kinda sensitive.

>> No.14783027

>>14782998
For the friction just limit mobility where you can, it's a fact of life that we can't cut out all movement so some uncomfortable sensations are going to happen, you only need to be concerned when it turns into pain. Within a few days the skin with have thickened to the point where you can move without any issues, so try not to worry. I know it's tempting to cover it, but at this point it would be worse to cut it off from the air than to keep it from rubbing just a little.

Here is how I laid out my after instructions for my clients.

Wash 2-3x a day with unscented liquid antibacterial soap (softsoap or liquid dial) in the shower when possible. Lather gently with fingers only and rinse without the stream spouting directly on to the wound (rather have it hit you above the area and cascade down) until all the suds are gone. Hop out of the shower and blot gently (paper towels are preferable as they don't have fibers that can cling but a towel will do) until mostly dry. Wait about 5 minutes before applying a thin layer of ointment (aquaphor, bacitracin, a&d) until fully absorbed into skin. If there is a reflective layer, dab it with a paper towel. Repeat this process for 5 days, then switch to an unscented lotion (lubriderm, jergens, Aveeno) instead of the ointment. During this time dont remove any scabs or raised spots prematurely, don't itch, don't expose to sunlight, and don't submerge in a bathtub/hottub/swimming pool/sauna. Avoid exposure to pet hair and constricting fabrics. That should pretty much do ya. :)

>> No.14783062

>>14783027
Thank you very much! I'll follow your instructions and get the unscented soap. So far I've been using the shower wand on a low pressure so the cold water very gently runs on the tattoo. I also let the tattoo air dry.

I'll switch up to what you said.

You're welcome, fren.
If the shower wand isn't hurting you, don't feel the need to change it. As long as the pressure is low you should be just fine. It'll probably feel really good when you're in the itchy stage, but don't go crazy. A lot of people tend to overthink this stuff but as soon as you get used to it, you'll be just fine. Maybe take some ibuprofen if you're very sore but sounds like you're on the way to a nicely healed piece with no issues.

Good on you for not going small, now you just gotta kick it in the ass and do a full sleeve. I actually am sort of fond of Oni masks, that could be something cool to incorporate.

I picked what I found to be one of the best places in NYC and the guy charges 200 per hour. I was told if people charge around that much, it shows they have quality in their work.

Color wise the tidal waves I was told are traditionally a grey color. The head and the sun spots I want the same red color as the fins. The lotus will be a pink and purple color. Some of the guys at the shop said the veins of the fish should be a yellow color like the eyes. I'm still contemplating on that.

And yeah I get what you mean about the head anatomy. The hannya mask I'm getting in my back will be having front and not to the side. It will look like the same mask that the character Goro Majima has from Yakuza. My left arm will have a black and blue koi fish swimming downstream.

What do you think of the scales? Should they have a grey color added or a red color?

Woodcut stuff is p popular on this board, it looks pretty clean.
I've drawn inspo from certain styles of tarot card decks, too. The Hermit looks pretty cool and could easily inspire a different, wizard-y adaptation of the Hermit's figure.

Ehhhh not always true unfortunately. I'm not gonna say your work is bad, not at all and I've seen much worse, but it's not worth $200 an hour. Even with a decade of experience I'd only worked up to charging $150 an hour max, this was in a state where the economy was booming at the time. I'm not sure how things are over there currently, but judging by the quality of some of the linework and the choppiness of some of the blends, not to mention the issue with anatomy, I'd suggest maybe searching a bit more for a more skilled artist for the next piece. Of course if youre happy, that all that matters and you can completely ignore me. I'm not trying to be overly critical and everyone's opinion is different.

As far as the coloration is concerned I'd suggest going with the grey, as more red would probably be overkill. I would think a light flat grey would be best, not grey as in a fanned out black but for the pigment to actually be grey itself. Then have the waves be varying shades of grey and incorporate different levels of shading therein. Pic related I would suggest for the scales, or something similar.

The guy I went to literally had the same shade of grey. He suggested the scales have grey. Honestly I love the work he did, and I could also get on the case of the lines and what not, but I'm satisfied. He charges 200 per hour and I stayed there for 5 hours but he told me to give him 600. The guy is a pretty chill dude and told me I was doing pretty good in the seat for a first tattoo I was getting. Hurt like a bitch but I took it good.

What would you recommend for the black spaces in the fins? I think those are the veins. They suggested yellow.

Oh I forgot to mention. I got home not too long ago and today was the first day without any bandages. My shirt had some ink on it, refer to pic attached, but the tattoo seems fine. I might need a touch up I think, honestly I dont know, but it didnt hurt much today. Just felt uncomfortable with the skin being sensitive. I bought the aveeno lotion based in what I found by google searching for aveeno tattoo aftercare and I bought the gold dial liquid soap.

I'm gonna apply the aquaphor for another 2 or 3 days then switch to the aveeno. I hope I'll get a spot in for this weekend to finish off the tattoo. How can I keep in contact with you to show you my progress? You're very knowledgable with tattoos and I want your opinion on some ideas i have.

Like I said, if it makes you happy that is literally the only thing that matters. I have a tendency to look on the technical side of things when it comes to tattoos, but a few wobbly lines does not a bad tattoo make. The overall composition is fairly good and provided you make good decisions about the rest of the color you will have a nice tattoo. Id suggest maybe bringing the shading out around the shoulder blade to made a nice Japanese style cap, or to bring it fully on to the chest pic related.

I think that yellow would be a good choice for the veins, especially because if it is more of a golden yellow than a canary yellow. With the red, and yellow in the koi and the pinks in the lotus you shouldn't have too much jarring contrast, keeping the entire tone of the tattoo warm. As I said though, I'm not an expert on Japanese style stuff, maybe peruse some references to see what other people have done and if you like it.

My plan for the tattoo is to have it connect to the back, which will be a full back with a hannya mask, which will con next to the left arm. The left arm will be another koi fish but swimming down stream and will be a blue color compared to the red on my right arm. It's like a yin yang style or asymmetrical style. The hannya on the back will have 2 snakes coiling around the horns and will go over my shoulder onto the chest. That's the plan so far. But I dont know about a full sleeve. I work in my hospitals HR department and I always have my sleeves rolled to my elbow. I dont think they will be wanting to hold onto me if I get a full sleeve. The department is hot as an oven too so I dont want to roll down my sleeves.

The point where you're putting something permanent into your body, you pretty much will do everything to rationalize the decision as a good one. Your natural coping mechanism sets in before you even feel an ounce of regret and you double down that it was a good decision. The people who are honest enough to admit to themselves at least that they regret their tattoos usually won't advertise it.

You absolutely do not have to get hard, if anything that would make it more difficult with the pressure of the bloodflow forcing the ink out. It;s like an eyelid tattoo, you stretch the skin over something cylindrical like a (wrapped up) waterbottle. Probably the one time I can actively get involved and help an artist out.
