I cant bring myself to wear my "nice" cologne (nothing niche, but big designer collection) unless it's for a special event or something. Usually only wear Zara frags even though I have so many bottles of the good stuff that I'll hardly ever finish a bottle. Anyone have a similar problem? I guess it's a symptom of deeper issues, because I'm the same with other aspects of my life (never make a move on girls that are clearly into me because I think I'm not good enough etc.)

Should I give up on gourmands? I've learned through brute force that I don't like particularly sweet fragrances. Got a full bottle of Guerlain l'instant, and I don't see myself wearing it very often. Tried YSL Opium on a whim, and didn't like the fragrance enough to bother with it. I tend to like greener, woodier fragrances. I also like some florals/spices. Are there sweet/semi-sweet fragrances for men who don't like sweet fragrances?

Oh, and on a semi-related note, Burberry Brit Rhythm Intense makes me nauseous. Not sure why.

This is such a broad category mate, two frags are not enough to make your mind about the whole genre. Try Profumum Roma Sorriso and Widian Rose Arabia Almond these are two solid gourmands. Also you might give a try to fragrances just with a gourmandish twist. If you like greener and woodier fragrances then try Roja Diaghilev. It has this beautiful peach twist to its chypre structure. Also NYI has a beautiful petit beurre last phase of drydown and it doesn't smell anything like a gourmand before that.
For sweet/semi-sweet fragrances Uden and Naxos by Xerjoff come to my mind. I've also tried today pic related and can 100% recommend it. It is mainly salt (very reminiscent of Aqua di Sale) in the beginning but then vanilla slowly takes over.

Honestly I just feel unhappy with almost all fragrances at this point. I can’t find a middle ground between niche and designer. The closes ive come is Chanel Sycomore bur the GF doesn’t really love it. I keep trying to just like Bleu de Chanel and it’s alternatives but I just don’t like it. It’s just painfully generic, if SEXcore has a scent it would be all these “‘most complicated” designer fragrances.

I’ve tried Guerlains, Eau Sauvage, New York Intense, and really appreciate them but they’re too old mannish to wear. TDH gets recommended too, but the dirty orange just feels totally sexless. I feel like it only appeals to men who want to dress in business casual at all times.

I enjoy Frederic Malles, but there too austere and off putting to people who aren’t niche heads.

I think good hygiene is the answer and on cool nights and special occasions I’ll wear Oud Wood.

I’m thinking of sampling some Hermès. Bel Ami Vetiver and Ambre Narguille, but I’m sure I’ll be disappointed. Oh well.

If you want vetiver in the mix there are plenty of options (if you search "fresh vetiver niche", I hear Sel de Vetiver is good. I can personally attest for Diptyque Vetyverio, it's a bit mature but in a different way than the old mannish scents you noted.

It was me shilling Acqua e Zucchero, so I'm glad to hear that you find it interesting. That's such good juice in my opinion. It might be a bit pricey but these are all extraits and it shows in performance. You could also try Dulcis in Fundo if you want another take on their vanilla.

How old are you? Good news is that once you hit 25, no one will consider wearing Eau Sauvage and NYI as out of place. It's all in your head. If you think that these are old men's smells then I'd recommend mayne to try to find sample of something oakmossy from Rogue Perfumery or try the classic Aramis.

I recently bought 50ml of Homme by Costume National for a really great price. I'm not sure about others but it's everything I could wish for from a spicy aromatic. It's like Christmas time in a bottle. I mostly get creamy (sandalwood) cloves and cinnamon. It's not too sweet as the citruses tone it down quite nice. The performance is great at least 6h off my skin with a noticeable sillage. Definitely sample this if it's anything of your interest.

Mine is L'Occitane EdT. It's a woody lavender that stays close to the skin. For your taste I'd recommend Cade. Fresh woody that's widely available and can be had cheap. It doesn't smell too mainstream and blurs the line between niche/designer but is still masculine leaning

Taking the eucris pill was a definite win for me it is an extremely sensual fragrance that is really only able to be smelled next to the skin and definitely matches what you would expect bond to wear. Also took the Swiss Arabian pill,Al Waseem is a very powdery herbal sweet smell that takes quite a bit of boldness to wear and really only suited in fall and winter in formal or business attire.
