To be honest, I'm mildly bitter about thrifting being popular now. When I was younger, I was teased mercilessly for all my clothes being second hand, but now I'll see those same people who teased me posting shitty YouTube thrift haul videos. I mean, I guess it's better for the environment and shit, but still. Seething.

Most worthwhile "thrift" stores nowadays are pricier than your average Goodwill and such (aka "vintage"), but for like-new or so condition the price is pretty great, considering that they're investment pieces at retail prices.

I've found some amazing stuff for $20-40 that retails for literally 10x more. It's a nice feeling to have a few pieces like that.

For basics and generic stuff going to a generic thrift store is better if you have the patience to sift through all the garbage.

the way i look at it, the "best" shit at a store like J Crew or Urban Outfitters or H&M, the items they want you to INSTANTLY gravitate towards, are a total waste of time. you've wasted the time driving there, parking, walking in, and you don't try on anything. you've just wasted probably an hour, probably 1.5 hrs.

with thrifting, you're getting a wide variety of the shit that tons of stores had on their front displays 20-30 years ago. the quality is higher because fast fashion hasn't completely taken over yet. you've got to spend an hour going through everything, but when you find something special, it's usually really special: something that someone has kept in their closet for 30 years and didn't want to throw out but maybe wore 10, 20 times. i mean, think of the level of dedication there, in that shirt you've just found with the super vintage label. way, way beyond whatever current trends are moving clothes into the box stores. also, you don't have to look at the black/mullatto models they use in the online storefronts. you can shop alongside fellow incels and legit mentally handicapped folx. and some of the chicks who wear vintage and run depop/etsy shops OOOFFFFF smoking

I really want to see thrifts outside of toronto because it feels like i'm drowning in a sea of art girls, streetwear kids, vintage heads and everyone else everytime I hit certain thrifts. Black Market in Queen Street is ok I guess considering price.

I used to thrift a bunch between like 2013-2016 mainly getting vintage Polo, Tommy, Levi's etc. and 90's sportswear. Now it's so played out I'm kind of over it, if you go in the afternoon its usually already picked clean, and I just hate the pretentious "omg whole outfit was thrifted!" attitude when those same people were mocking it a few years ago. and it's kind of gross desu none of it's washed and you don't know where its been.

Been collecting and reselling for the past 10 years, with the last 4 getting really crazy in terms of sales, knowledge, connections, etc.

Right now the game stepped up so much that you need to be either making a living out of it or a rich kid with a ton of free time. You might find something from time to time, but you'll never have a world class wardrobe of stuff. Kind of similar to what happened with retrovidya. Does anyone have experience/advice to thrift in York (England)?

>> No.14729102

I almost exclusively thrift or buy second hand on Grailed. I just do it for the sustainability (of the environment and my money). I live in New York so there's never any trouble finding a thrift store. Some of the more "curated" shops are more expensive, which is stupid and I tend to avoid these. Thrifting can be hard work and a lot of the time you find nothing. But when you find something really great, it makes it worth it.

Mate it's no skill required over here. Walk into a charity shop and see what's happening. Whole upper part of this outfit is all out of charity shops.
Smaller places are better though, like the city centre one here is wank and they jack up the prices, but the one right down the road is in an ethnic area so I own Salwar Kameez sets that make me look like a cult leader. The best ones I've been too are always in small towns. Found an emerald green cord jacket in Downham Market that fits like it was made for me. No branding and a care label in German, but no fake pockets. it's great quality.

A lot of my favorite pieces are thrifted just from regular thrift stores, but my best stuff is from the more expensive places that buy/sell, and from secondhand designer resale. But when my stuff is nicer I can sell it back when I want to get rid of it, so the extra cost is worth it

Care to share some of the better places to thrift in NYC? I'm particularly interested stuff like pleated pants, blazers, and anything wool. Understandable if you don't want to share, since most who thrift have the "I'm not telling you so I get all the good stuff" mentality. Personally I haven't had much luck with thrift stores in NYC, most of the men's clothes are crusty T-shirts or button-up shirts in awful patterns, anything interesting is usually in some ridiculous size. Most of my stuff is from online, Ebay has a ton of stuff if you know what to look for (or know what idiots will incorrectly list it as), but poshmark can have some good deals because it seems like only middle aged women use it and they often sell men's stuff for less than it's worth.
