Do you dive and/or have a 7.5"+ wrist? If not I'd say no.

Most divers are not really designed to be worn in critical diving situations, but rather to have some sort of visual appeal where that has very little in my opinion. That and I can't even find out what kind of movement is in it, beyond some forums saying that it's an Epson quartz leads me to believe it's not a watch that's really worth buying at retail price.

In that price range you'll get a whole lot more watch out of a Casio duro or some sort of lower end Orient or an SKX clone like a Heimdallr. (Maybe not more water resistance but if you're seriously diving below 200m I doubt you'd be asking on a fashion board).

Honestly man, I know it's not a super popular recommendation here but just get a G-shock if you need something practical that won't break under high water pressure/compression. Most "tool watches" in 2019 are not really designed to actually be used as tools and the ones that are really designed to be used in really rugged situations are generally not particularly fashionable.

If you want one that sort of balances the two, Deep Blue makes a few really solid quartz divers that aren't going to make you look ridiculous (and their automatics are awesome too but ~$400 so not really in a comparable price range). Deep Blue would be my recommendation if you really need the high water resistance, but if 200m and solid build will do get a Heimdallr/G-shock/Casio Duro etc.

Tried on the Timex Marlin. $50 off until the end of tonight off a local store. $250 Canadian, good reviews online, going to buy soon.

Not exactly the biggest fan of the leather as it doesn’t fit my daily clothes- but I should be able to get a replaceable more casual strap down the road. Any suggestions would be cool.

Don't go for the OP. The basic Rolex model is really basic. Go for an Explorer or even better the white dial 116400 Milgauss instead.

Personally I prefer the 5227 over the 5196 as that model can definitely be worn casually.

Also look at the Gen 3 Vacheron Overseas. Pre-owned these are fantastic value especially if you avoid the blue dial which often goes for several thousand more purely for the color and should be available around the top end of your budget.

Nothing inherently wrong with those but buying Japanese shows me that these brands could be making in-house movements without jumping the price up. Why is it that you get a more robust value out of cheaper watch brands than houses that cost 2x as much? I know swatch took over lots of these companies, but the fact remains they got absorbed because of strictly the brand legacy. If I’m paying for aesthetics and legacy, I’d rather go with brands that have them in spades. Nitpicking is all. I’m not totally opposed to eta. Just my reasoning behind that comment.

38 to 40 is your goldilocks zone, im assuming you're not looking for a diver if >>14677918 this is you

tisell in korea do a whole range of cheap homages, the explorer looks ok, they all use the automatic miyota 9015 which you should read about online
http://shop2.tisellkr.cafe24.com/

you could get a st19 handwinding chronograph watch for 250 (hked, FOD merkur etc) just keep in mind these are SUPER fragile watches

if you want to go automatic vintage, you might be able to find a seiko lord matic model for under 200, you want the 52xx or 56xx movements, make sure all the parts are genuine (crystal - hands - crown), the dial is ok and not refinished, the movement visually looks clean and ask the seller how it is keeping time and how long it is holding power. it may take you a long time to find a good one (like all vintage watch hunting)

there are just 3 options for you, I know of much more, when you do get a watch, order a cheap springbar tool, and a 30 dollar Rios1931 strap, I had a tobacco model in cocnac and was very pleased (make sure lug width of strap matches the watch e.g. that tisell explorer would be fitted with a 20mm strap)

Not bad but I prefer the crown guard and the bigger dots over the hour markers. Black is nice but less versatile when matching with straps.

Can one of you nerds explain to me what it is about "in house handwound chronograph" movement that gets people so hard.

Surely a automatic would be harder to do? Is it just that a rotor woild obscure parts of the movement and leave less for finishing and other big dick swinging? I understand the I house aspect.

I see a lot of people say that producing one is almost like a rite of passage for a watchmaker however they don't seem to explain why?

On top of what he said there are also quite a few other good choices.

The Swatch System 51 Irony line has a lot of good stuff under $200 that should be in your size. There's also a good amount of Seiko 5's that would be well within your budget with decent durability over time. Timex also makes a lot of good stuff in that range. I'd personally recommend looking into getting a weekender because it has the flexibility to be either dressed up or down depending on what you want. If you can find one under $200 the Timex Marlin would fit very well in your general concept while having the versatility to be dressed up as a very formal watch depending on what you wanted to use it for.

Citizen has quite a few good watches in that range too, (though citizen likes to make things a bit bigger than 40mm) but there's a lot of really good ecodrives that will look great on tan leather under $200 (though you'll probably need to change the watch from being on a bracelet to strap which isn't so hard to do).

If you look on Jomashop/Amazon/LongIslandWatch in their under $200 range you should be able to find something you'll like with enough room in your budget for a strap you think would match it well (just make sure the band size is right because a 22mm strap will not fit so well on a watch with 20mm lugs etc).
