I'm calling bullshit on this, mate. Why is it that she's the arm of our corporate overlords despite the fact that one of our most powerful industries (IE, fossil fuels, plastics, etc.) is totally opposed to her and uses all of its leverage in the media to paint her as a fearmongering looney? They wouldn't be doing that if they genuinely didn't perceive her to be a threat.

>>14663938
It's impossible to speak in generalities like that. It may be in the interest of some corporations to move towards a more ecologically sound approach, but the number of industries that are dependent on environmentally unsustainable processes are too numerous to count. What Greta is proposing I imagine very few businesses would be willing to comply as it would trash their margins.

>> No.14663970

Are you retarded? The poster I was replying to was criticising Greta for not going far enough in her radical environmentalism. That is not the same issues that blue-collar workers have with her, IE. being worried about taxes going up, nor does it have any bearing on what Asia or Africa is doing. All I'm seeing here is a lot of loose red string and no deftly-woven argument. What convinced you that this reply was at all relevant?

Not that guy, but countries who contribute a small percentage of carbon emissions (0-2%) total around 40% of all carbon emissions, which is the biggest chunk. Not reducing their footprint because their total emissions are not "important" doesn't add up.

That's not what I mean, either. Those small emitters have a responsibility to reduce their footprint because together they make up 40%, which is the same as China and the US emissions combined. Everyone has to pull their weight; can't just bow out because "we only produce 1.2%!"

>Europe has zero effect on climate change or contamination
Are you trying to say that Europe has zero impact on the climate, or that Europe's attempts to combat climate change amount to nothing? If you're gonna mention statistics, at least reference them, and if you're going to write something, at least write in a clear way that doesn't lend itself to misinterpretation. Having a stake in a more renewable form of energy does not mean you want all of your investments in older, less sustainable energies to tank, but that's what would happen if we went through with Greta's plan. Big corps love regulation the same way that hairdressers and taxi drivers love licensing. It raises the barrier to entry. Big megacorps with their talons in govt can afford to keep up with regulation. Their small competition cannot. They die off. Consolidate power. This is basic corporatist playbook shit, dude.

You're moving the goalposts, her argument has always been about carbon emissions rather than plastics in the ocean. I don't think I nor Greta think that plastic pollution is a good thing, but but its not the most imminent threat in the same way that climate change is. There's nothing wrong with prioritising.

>> No.14664259

>Big megacorps with their talons in govt can afford to keep up with regulation. Their small competition cannot.
But this is a problem rooted in capitalism, not environmental protection. Capitalism cannot solve the ecological crisis because (as you've rightly pointed out) big business will thrive in an environment that punishes cheaper, less sustainable practises. It's certainly going to be a challenge, but the only way things will change is if that hegemony is broken up to give smaller businesses a chance. If we're going to take the ecological crisis seriously, a shift of the overton window to the left is inevitable

>> No.14664304

>>14664259
Shifts to the left won't solve it. Conservatives trust business too much and progressives trust govt too much. Both are blinded.

But to make this a fault of capitalism is a mistake, because behind a whole lot of these corps are govt hands. Just look at the meat industry. Govt gives farms low prices on water and subsidies so they can raise cattle in areas that have no business raising cattle and in an actual free market would be unsustainable. Govt also cannot break up big business with regulation. They need to pull the teat and stop feeding them. Supply and demand works, but our demand right now, for a number of reasons, is fucked. And that is what we are supplied.
