Hello anons, I really need your help. My hair is a mess. I don't know what products I should use and don't have a ton to spend on fancy ones. I currently use dove moisturizing shampoo & conditioner or garnier whole blends honey treasures shampoo and conditioner. For a few months I've been losing/shedding a lot of hair mostly due to stress and my hair feels like it's easily tugged or my scalp feels soar if that makes sense? I'm worried. I have no knowledge on hair care so I could use your help and thank you! Also, I need to cut it so any ideas for that would be great.

Invest in some cold pressed oils. It looks like your cuticles are damaged and open(hence the dry rough look) and lacks oil to keep them sealed. Not all oils are equal however, it depends on the lipid chain of that oil. For instance, oils high in triglycerides penetrate hair deeper. This includes things like coconut rosehip(iirc) and sunflower seed oil. These oils are good to help keep things moisturized however they are not as great at sealing as other oils. Oils that seal have more bulky lipid chains. These oils include argan, olive, advocado and jojoba oil. These are are great at sealing in moisture and add a shine effect to your hair.

Apply the oil wet just after a shower after you have freshly combed it, take your time and apply to small sections of hair at a time. It is a bit of trial and error to know exactly how much is too much it depends on your hair time, length and damage. If you applied too much oil rinse your head with hot water but do not shampoo it out unless its really bad. The hot water will help dilute the oil and thin it out. Over shampooing your hair will not be your friend in moisture retention as the process opens up your cuticles. Thus it is recommended to shampoo every 2-3 days or so depending on your hair type and scalp.

Oil retains moisture, but too much can indeed cause moisture to be locked out so one must keep this in mind and not apply it religiously. I would start applying oil on the days that you shampoo after you get out of the shower.

HAIR PROFESSIONAL HERE.
ur hair has TEXTURE, Thats why its frizzing like this.
>NO HEAT
>NO EXCESS SHAMPOO
>basically no SULFATE/SILICONE/WEIRD CHEMICAL SHIT in hair products.
My hair used to look like this, its a matter of taking care of it and its texture. Never ever brush with a normal brush. Especially when your hair is dry. Comb only or use your fingers.
Shampoo with a safe natural shampoo (maui moisture is a good brand)
Condition, leave in for a bit, COMB THRU WET HAIR WITH CONDITIONER, Then rinse it out upsidedown and scrunch it a bit to get out excess water.
>NEVER wrap hair with towel after shower
>Always use cotton tshirt or cotton anything.
Towels create frizz.
Basically be as natural as possible for the healthiest hair.
I'd suggest cutting off a few inches just to give your hair somewhat of a "push" to get healthier.
Consistency is key. Heres my hair after cutting it, and taking care of it better for a little less than a year.

Try some of this stuff. Its relatively cheap from the supermarket, but it works pretty great. Its got argan oil and will perform the function of what most people are suggesting in the thread. I use it and it's great. It can be something to tide you over till you get to more advanced stuff.

Apart from that, I recommend talking to a stylist at a salon. See if any around you will do free consultations. They'll often point you in the right direction. It also helps if you have some idea of what you'd like. Try googling to identify your hair type/properties, and then Google images for hairstyles for those types of hair, and see if there's anything you like. Look into hairstyles for face-shapes, etc. Then go to a salon and tell them this is what you'd like to go for. But you can also just go in with no prior idea.

Oh also, I have yet to try it myself but I hear switching to silk pillowcases helps in keeping frizz tamed. Hypothetically this makes sense to me but again I have yet to try it for myself. I find the oil has really helped, but keep in mind my hair is really long so sebum does not coat the entire hair length. Your hair is shorter than mine, so you may be able to get enough sebum to coat your hair if you do not strip your hair of its natural oil everyday. Your natural oil is the best for hair, but when you are not producing enough, stripping it too often, or if you have really long hair, it will not cover your entire hair length.

Adding onto these, may repeat information by mistake but it'll be a collection of the knowledge I have acquired...
Throw away hair brushes especially plastic bristle ones. The only brush I found to be ok are the one made with soft hair bristles but not for detangling, only for smoothing hair out. Combs cause less breakage. Use a wide tooth comb and fingers for most tangles, smaller tooth ones to get finer tangles, smooth out fly aways and frizz and for styling. Hair is best combed wet, always.

Air drying is best, even cotton will cause frizz. The best way to dry hair and prevent friction from roughing it up is to gently squeeze water out with your hands and giving it time to air dry completely. Towels and cotton shirts are good if you are in a hurry, but blot hair with them rather than rubbing. But again it is better to air dry always.

If your hair feels good, not too oily, not too dry, ideal basically, there is no need to shampoo, condition, oil or wet it that day. I am not saying to skip showers, but avoid getting your hair wet on these days. Hot water will thin out the oil and open your cuticles up which isn't necessary and even harmful if your hair is in its ideal state. When it is at its best just leave it alone.

Adding gelatin to you shampoo is good for upping the quality of the product. My ratio is 1 packet of gelatin dissolved in 1/4 cup water for every 8 oz of shampoo. If you have thinner hair use half the packet instead of the full one. Gelatin is protein and this will help make your hair stronger. The process of shampooing opens up your cuticles allowing product to seep in better. This is why I do not recommend adding gelatin to conditioner as conditioner is sealing your cuticles. This will help keep your hair from breaking while also making it so you get more mileage from your shampoo as the shampoo is thicker and you need less of it. When rinsing out conditioner do so with cold water.

Avoid heat treatments like curling irons, straightening irons, blow dryers etc. I know that there is a way to attain curls without a curling iron. I shall link a YouTube video at the end of this to demonstrate. I currently do not know a way to straighten hair without heat. Someone may know something somewhere but my knowledge of that is limited. Really the best thing to do is not manipulate your hair at all or ass little as possible. Appreciate your hair's natural state and your hair will be much healthier being itself.

When your hair is very damaged, consider using a hair mask. There are many different kinds you can buy or make, but my favorite is one made from milk, gelatin, honey and apple cidar vinegar. Rinsing with apple cidar vinegar alone is also good for your hair due to being acidic.

The best oils to add to your hair and why:
>Coconut oil, rosehip oil, shea butter
Penatrates hair shaft deeper than most other oils. I like to combine rosehip oil and sheabutter. Rosehip is high in lineloic acid, sheabutter is higher in oleic acid.
>Olive oil, argan oil, jojoba oil
These will not penatrate as deeply as the above however they seal better due to their bulkier lipid chains. I find jojoba oil to be the best one of these three at sealing and adding shine. Be very careful as you only need a small amount of oil.

A shampoo and conditioner I recommend are the pura d'or ones. I find they have really good ingredients and results. I have tried many different kinds but this one in particular is my favorite so far. I have tried acure which is nice but honestly did not find it as good as pura d'or. I recommend the anti frizz formula for people struggling with frizzy hair. They are a bit expensive but honestly worth it. They have no sulfate and use aloe vera as the base rather than plain water as well as oils like argan.

If you want one that is water based, Shea Moisture Strengthen & Restore is a good one. As for an oil based one buy cold pressed oils like jojoba, sheabutter, or rosehip.

Oils last longer and seal in moisture better than water based ones, but water based moisturizer add actual moisture(as in water) into your hair.

>> No.14654618

>>14654586
Oh also, I do not recommend water based leave in conditioners as much as just using oils. They tend to use stearyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol and octyldodecanol as emulsifiers. This isn't so bad occasionally but excessive use of them will make hair weaker and more prone to breakage. Apply oils to wet hair to lock in moisture. Works better from my experience. The waterbased leave in conditioners is for quick results but not as good for long term care.

Some brands i use
>Maui Moisture
>Shea moisture
These are sulfate/weird chemical shit free, while also on the more affordable side. I use these and dilute the shampoo with water, sometimes apple cider vinegar. Straight shampoo is unnecessary and extra drying.
Shampoo only scalp, condition only ends.
THESE BRANDS DRY YOUR HAIR BAD
>Pantene
>Herbal Essence
>Dove
>Lorreal
>ETC, Theyre Usually drug store shampoos

For those with textured hair, and dont mind the pricier side, I highly highly HIGHLY recommend Devacurl products.
For "textured" hair (Similar to OP hair, confused pattern, frizz)
This brand is fokin amazing, nondrying whatsoever, and shapes hair amazingly OVER TIME as you take care of it.

Reminder to always be consistent.
I personally switch products, more concentrated shampoos on actual wash day (maui, shea) and Devacurl in between as it lacks in really leaving your hair feeling "clean" (Thats what i like abt this brand though)
I do not use oils in my hair, already naturally moisturized, for those with very dry hair, I'd suggest experimenting with deep conditioners that DO NOT HAVE SILICONE. (Devacurl conditioner is reeeallly great btw)
Silicone is what makes hair FEEL "soft" however its soft because its an unnatural coating on your hair that not only weighs it down (sometimes taking your hair texture away too) but actually dries it. Bad cycle

Hair is already the way its supposed to be, thats why its best to be as natural as possible and not add weird ass chemicals to the naturalness of it. Strips it away of its natural shape and confuses tf out of it.
Wonky comparison but- Like makeup, its more pleasing to enhance features than to completely change them. Which means, use natural things to encourage your hair to be nice and pretty vs chemicals that fry your hair and force it to be weird and confused

Just dont create a huge lather is what I mean, this is also why i dilute shampoo, it creates a smaller, less harsh lather

Massage scalp, if it drips down thats ok, just dont lather it in towards the ends.

it's very unnecessary to scrub shampoo down the ends of hair, usually the goal with shampoo is to cleanse the dirt/oil the scalp holds. Its fine if it goes down, just dont suds it up and encourage bubbles and shit, thatll really dry it out. Just let the ends keep its natural moisture while refreshing the top so you dont look like a greaseball either.

First of all, thanks for all of these, you're amazing. I have three questions:

1. I live with pretty stubborn roommates and they wont want to change Herbal Essences to one of the more expensive, better ones you said, and to be honest I'm pretty poor. What should I do? Simply go no-poo until I can get good shampoo in some months? Only use a bit of coconut oil? Same with conditioner.

2. Once I get decent shampoo, how often do I use it? Same with conditioner? Shampoo 1-2 times a week? Less than that? Conditioner every day? Every 2 days? What about oils, how often? I'm writting this keeping in mid you said not to get it wet if it looks good that day.

3. How to keep it from smelling if I havent used shampoo or conditioner for a few days?

I would save up and nopoo, and shampoo when your hair and scalp feels dirty and greasy, just dilute the shitpoo when you use it and it should hopefully be less damaging. How often you need to shampoo and condition depends on a few factors. How long is your hair? How dry or oily is it? If it feels dry avoid shampoo but consider conditoning and adding a little oil to seal cuticles up and lock moisture in. If it gets oily shampoo it and use less or no conditioner definitely do not use oils. You really just have to trial and error this one out imo. As for oil this also depends. Ideally you want sebum to oil your hair naturally. Its composition is unique among other oils and has an acid only found in it, sapienic acid. So ideally this is your hairs main source of lubricant. However there are times your hair is either too long for sebum to evenly coat the strands, or your sebaceous glands are just assholes and are underproductive. This is when oils from another source are useful. If you need to add oil to your hair for one or more of theae reasons its again a bit of a trial and error thing because hair can vary so greatly among people. Start with small amounts, underestimate how much you need. If its not enough gradually add more until it is just right. If you're smelly then it means you should probably shampoo, that smell is bacteria reacting with air and sebum. Purge it.

1. firstly, this "no-poo" idea is very weird to me, i tried it sort of, it was awful- Never again. Confused about the roommate part however if you just dilute the shampoo, it will be a whoollee lot better than using it straight from the bottle, you can mix the shampoo with water in your hand and apply it as needed. but know- the less the better.

2.Everyone is different. However often you feel like using it is the answer. just experiment and find the best solution for you. I personally have oilyish hair so i clean my hair every day, just switching products so its less damaging. ("harsher" shampoo on wash day, still diluted and "calmer" shampoo in between 2 days or so.)
Basically whenever I feel my hair is dirty, i clean it with a stronger shampoo. I dont really use oils, they dont react well with my hair, however other anons have written some pretty useful things about different oils and whatnot so i'd look into that more.

3. You wash whenever you feel like it- if it smells/feels weird/whenever. In the end its your own hair with own reactions to different products.

experiment with everything and go with whatever your hair reacts well to and what you feel comfortable with... If youre doing it right your hair should not smell. If it does smell, you should probably wash it.
Basic tips:
>no towel drying, use cotton shirt or silk to soak up water. Air drying is best
>No strong lathers
>Avoid weird chemicals, if you cant- DILUTE DILUUTEEE
>Conditioners with silicone- yes herbal essences- you can dilute these too.
You can also experiment with no conditioner and minimal shampoo to encourage your hair to naturally moisturize itself (i do this too) while also preventing your hair from smelling/feeling/looking dirty and gross.
annndd
>NO DRY BRUSHING
>COMB or run fingers through only in shower- WITH conditioner to avoid extra tugging.
>Only reason to brush instead of comb is if your hair is majestically straight like Gelatin hair anon.

Oh yes, I forgot to add. Never apply any oil to your scalp. When applying oil start with the ends and work you wah in, but keep it away from your scalp. You do not want to trick your brain into producing less sebum because the scalp is getting oil from another source.

We have very similar hair then, even in texture.
Only difference is I trained mine to form locks/whatever theyre called, "loose curlz"
This is my hair after a shower, drying with a cotton shirt, wrapping in silk, then scrunching a bit with a small amt of ecogel. (i dont do this all the time, only when i go out really)
My hair stuff might work for you;

Ah, you have a combination hair type. This is a bit tricky. I would apply very small amounts of oil to those dry areas or alternatively try to spread the oil from the oilier parts of the hair to the dryer ends. Invest in a very fine tooth comb perhaps, it will help tame frizz and evenly spread oil. Like pic related, sorry for shitty image quality. This one is cheap and ok in a pinch you can find it at a walmart or something, but wooden combs are even better but cost more.

Oh, this is because of the shampoo you are using for sure. Definitely dilute it with water until you get a better one.

Ok sorry I am going to tis a little about wood combs.

The problem with plastic combs is how they are molded and the material. They have ever so slightly roughness on the teeth kind of like a seraded knife, this tugs on your hair cuticles and they cause static electricity. Bamboo makes the best combs, they are less porous allowing oil to be more evenly distributed. They can last a long time if you take care of it, make sure you properly dry it when it gets wet for instance.

harsh shampoos strip your hair oils, thats why it gets frizzy the first day. the lack of oil also causes your hair to overcompensate with the grease. hence why it gets greasy the day after. Just read on the other anons about hair. Your hair just needs managing with the amt of stuff you put in it.

how do i prevent split ends?

>> No.14660098

>>14660054
Split ends are when hair is fragile and break into a split. Once they are there, the only way to remedy them is to snip off the split with scissors. As for prevention there are several methods found to be effective.

>do not over shampoo, shampoo less often, dilute shampoo with water before each use, and switching to less harsh shampoos
Shampoo strips your hair of oils and dries it out. This will easily lead to split ends as it weakens your hair, especially your ends. Shampoo the scalp only.
>add gelatin to shampoo, gelatin hair masks occasionally
Gelatin is a protein composed of many amino acids. You hair is made of keratin, a structure of fibrous protein. Gelatin and keratin share many of the same amino acids thus gelatin will help reinforce your hair and make it stronger by adding those acids into your hair, thus helping to prevent split ends from occurring and making hair stronger.
>conditioners
A good conditioner makes a huge difference. It will seal your cuticles and add moisture into your hair and thus also make hair less prone to splitting and keep it strong. Shampoo the length of your hair, avoid the scalp, rinse with cold water.

>> No.14660106

>>14660098
>oil
Like a conditioner, oils help keep your cuticles tamed down and lock in moisture inside the hair. Sebum is the best oil for you hair, but for some people their scalp doesn't always produce enough to cover your hair root to tip for various reasons(hair is really long, scalp simply doesn't produce enough sebum, you strip your hair and scalp of sebum too often with shampoo). Investing in an oil with a less bulky lipid chain like rosehip will help, its less bulky lipid chain means it will penetrate into the hair deeper. An oil with a more bulky lipid chain, like jojoba, will sit on top of the hair more than it penetrates. This is why it shines and seals hair cuticles in place so well. Never apply oil on or near the scalp. When applying oil start from the ends and work up, best done on wet/damp hair to lock in even more moisture, underestimate how much oil you need and trail and error to figure out what the best amount for your hair is.
>combs vs brushes
A good comb will work wonders for your hair. Brushes tend to be too rough on hair, especially ones that use plastic for their bristles. Plastic combs are not as good for your hair as a wooden comb. Plastic is molded in such a way that the teeth tend to be a little jagged and they cause static. A bamboo comb is not as porous as other hardwoods meaning it will spread the oils on your hair better and it does not create static. A wooden comb is far more gentler on hair than plastic or metal ones.

>> No.14660142

>>14660106
Oh yes, drying is also important in preventing split ends.
>drying
Air drying takes a long time, but is the most healthy way to dry hair as you are not using any friction or having a cloth absorb oils. A smooth cotton shirt/cloth is better than a terrycloth towel for drying with a towel method. Avoid blow dryers, heat will open cuticles, evaporate moisture, and thus damage your hair. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase will also help reduce friction while you sleep and helps keep frizz tamed. Other fabrics like cotton will absorb oil more and cause more friction, drying and damaging your hair. This can also help prevent slip ends.

My hair is getting longer and now I'm starting to get knots in my hair at the bottom of my neck, doesn't matter how many times I brush my hair and when I tie my hair back my hair falls out and knot up still. Can you recommend some shampoos and conditioners?

>> No.14660234

>>14660204
Personally I found pura d'or to be very effective. However, it is recommended to try different ones to see which one compliments your hair best. Everyone is different so what works for one anon's hair may not be as great for another's. Some people skip traditional shampoos and found cleansing conditioners to be better for them, another anon itt uses maui moisture and devacurl and has had good results. Try a few out and take note of the results it gives and stick to the one that gave you the best results. Its trail and error, and be sure to use it for awhile to actually get a good idea of how well it is working, a few weeks or untill the bottle is empty or close enough to being empty. Keep an eye out for conditioners with silicone in them, these are more harmful to your hair but fool people because silicone will at first make hair feel really smooth and shiny, but it will actually dry it out and damage it.

Are your ends on the dry side? This could be contributing to hair knotting up. Smooth hydrated hair will naturally slide free from each other and be less prone to tangling up and knotting. Consider a leave in conditioner or a little bit of oil applied to the ends of your hair only.

i have been dealing with bringing my hair back to a healthy state for a few months and i think i’ve finally cracked the code. the hard part is that you will have to invest a bit into hair care products, but i feel like i know the cheapest way to do it. first, i would buy a carotene hair mask from amazon OR the perfect 10 leave in conditioner from amazon. if you choose to use the leave-in, sleep in it twice a week. the products you say you use fuck with your elasticity & are a huge part of why your hair is struggling. try using new shampoo and conditioner that has more natural ingredients, something without sulfates. i use collagen pump real raw shampoo & conditioner from walgreens, it’s in an orange bottle and about $8 for each bottle. as for the hair growth, you could also start taking collagen supplements from walmart. they have “hair, skin, & nail” gummies.

seconding on the collagen supplements. But I buy collagen petides/gelatin and make a tea with it. What I do is add a scoop of the gelatin into my tea cup and pour the hot tea over it to mix. It does have a bit of a texture, but freshly mixed gelatin does not set into its iconic jello-like form for awhile after being freshly mixed with warm water. I buy the full spectrum collage by Flyby, it contains types I, II, III, V, and X and it lasts me quite awhile plus I can use it for hair masks, face masks, shampoo boost, etc.
