Is it worth it to get decent furniture for a university apartment, or should I just go full IKEA core? I already have specific items in mind, like the sofa and textiles, but I'm not sure if it's worth taking out student loans for so my smoker roommates can get their stench into everything.

You can make it look acceptable with just IKEA/cheap shit. Just think about how you're unlikely to keep any of this stuff past your student life and use that to determine purchases. That's not even considering the smoke getting into fabrics which can make them a total write off.

Really sucks, but unless you have a shitton of money, IKEA just works. Doesn't look too bad, decently made and you can always sell it on, since everyone loves IKEA. Oh well, at least I'm writing this whilst I'm sitting on a 40yo ligne roset sofa that's virtually indestructible so I'm only living in 95% IKEAcore.

It's actually pretty easy to find stuff like this, my family has lived on the east coast for a long time and we've accumulated a lot of stuff that was at one point very valuable, but now is impossible to put in your home. There are a bunch of paintings, and all the ones that aren't valuable enough to be donated to a museum are going to have to go at some point. Same thing with furniture, there is no way to fit something like that in to your house, it can't exist in a modern home of someone who actually has guests. Even if it's valuable, it's too expensive to store somewhere, so it has to be gotten rid of.

Buying ikea is expensive soulless garbage. Buy secondhand from antique or auction. Furniture is cheaper, higher quality and can be resold later.

The only reason youd need a loan is to buy brand new furniture. If you're not smart enough to realize that paying thousands for a couch is a dumb idea you've got bigger problems.

What you want is to be able to get stuff cheap and move it easily. You're not settling there long term. In my uni apt I have two vintage pieces, my nightstand and the kitchen dining set. Both have more specialized needs, were the worst to move, and the table is already getting cut up by the idiot roommates.

I'm not trying to argue pro ikea, but unfortunately, its often the most practical and cost effective solution. And you gotta admit, some of their designs are classics in itself.

+1 for shopping 2nd hand stores. maybe not a dedicated antique reseller who have to buy and make profits but a place that works off donations.

I work for a Christian thrift store and we often get good stuff. (get donations)

location usually affect price. I work in a more low socioeconomic area and we sell decent stuff for a lot less than the gentrified hipster/trendy areas.

where we might sell a couch like this for $200, some areas can get triple or quadruple that easily. and often if a regular person were to just resell it themself they can get $1000 or 2 for it.

>> No.14625407

>>14625393
btw a lot of Christian thrift stores are still profit driven and have to meet budgets and stuff btw (at least my one does) but still would be cheaper than antique resellers. heck they often come to us for their stock because they know if they post the same item up on Facebook or whatever they'll get a lot more than the sticker price we had on it

Leather is cold in cold weather and sticky in hot weather. It's also slippery if you're wearing smooth clothing. Cheap leather can wear faster than cheap fabric. The plus side it it's easy to clean and won't stain.

Yeah, the Guzmania and Vrisea hybrids you normally get can look kinda fake, and those take forever until they flower again, but they're nice plants still.
See if you can get some Achmea or Billbergia (pic related), those look a bit more normal, I'd say.
Or Neoregalia, but those are hard to find, since they tend not to have fancy flowers, so you won't find them in normal shops.

…nah, seriously, I love open spaces, but I'd hate it to be exposed. Luckily I got a flat where like 80% of it is private (unless someone on the hill I'm looking at at the one side or the estate at the other side has a telescope, or some creep climbs up a tree).
